Music?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is supposed to be in the sticky music thread, since I just want to discuss it... So anyways, I've recently got into Cannibal Corpse. I'm not normally a death metal fan, mostly a lot of prog rock and metal (Coheed & Cambria, The Mars Volta, The Protomen, King Crimson, System of a Down, etc.) but after hearing some songs it's kind of grown on me. Yeah, I know... I'm late to the party with these guys. Does anyone have any suggestions on which album to start with?

Cannibal Corpse isn't death metal... it's Brutal Death metal.

Map of Metal

I can't stand brutal death, the screaming doesn't fit the music.

I'm a huge fan of melodic death metal and such, though.

Stuff like...

Mix kickass riffs, with fitting vocals. There you go, a good sub genre of death metal.

(And seriously, cannibal corpse? They sound like trash, ugh).

Hey man, I got to be more specific, or everything thinks all death metal is people growling. (Protip: It's not).

Also get Skaadvik in here. He'll link a bunch of obscure music I've never heard of and is a ton better than what I linked. Those are just four of my favorite death metal bands.

HONESTLY though, over the past few years I've been listening to less and less death metal, been getting into the whole doom/death thing with bands like Anathema.

Insomnium is at the top of my melodic death metal bands at the moment. Their songwriting and melodies are amazing, heavily influenced by the Gothenburg style (Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity fame recently did a single with a band for their next album). Wintersun would be too if they'd release any new songs in the past 5 years. Kalmah's always a favorite, and pretty popular.

I posted this in the official music thread, but again here for quick reference.

The Ocean are awesome.

Cannibal Corpse is a good starting point for death metal.

Assuming this is what you're after, here are some links of death metal I have come to enjoy.

At the Gates - Blinded by Fear

-Simple, unpretentious death metal; gets straight to the rocking out.

Gojira - Flying Whales

-French progressive death metal; this song is about flying whales, as you might expect. It is supremely kickass.

Heaven Shall Burn - The Weapon They Fear

-Melodic death/metalcore. One of the few metalcore bands I really enjoy.

Nile - Ramses, Bringer of War

-Super intense technical death metal.

that's all for now, folks!

Love Gojira, and At the Gates. Discovered them through Pandora years ago.

Heaven Shall Burn also sounds badass, will have to give them a listen.

But fuck Cannibal corpse. Hate them.

Hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate.

It's the screaming, the shit sounding drums, and the fact they just sound like shit. Ugh.

And that psychodelic stoner rock was great. Holy shit.

Thanks Skaad. I see that Cannibal Corpse is an learned taste. :P I dunno, I never used to like death metal, but one night I got curious and listened to Evisceration Plague. I checked out some of their other songs, giggled at the over-the-top album cover and lyrics, and found out that a lot of their stuff is pretty good. What album do you suggest I start with Skaad?

Lots of Metal can be cross-categorized, but one never fails to make me giggle insanely.

GWAR as either Black or Death Metal.

LOL...really...I suppose that their unique (well, rare anyway) position as "Comedy Metal" is just too much for some people to understand.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I decided to start with Cannibal Corpse's Vile album, since I seem to prefer Corpsegrinder to Barnes. What is everyone's opinions on the White Stripes? I heard one album and liked it (Get Behind Me Satan). How are the others?

White Stripes are awesome, my wife and I might be doing a White Stripes cover band (we will call ourselves Black Spots) for the great cover up on campus this year. It's an event where you dress like and cover a famous band.

The Atlas Moth - An Ache For The Distance

Doom/Sludge metal with some black metal influences, really awesome if you like slow and heavy stuff (which I ADORE).

Not embedded because there are tits, and god forbid you should see tits!
