Is it acceptable? Or ridiculous?

I can't vote yes OR no on this one. Sometimes I use "real-world" songs, but only if the lyrics are somehow, at least to me, fit within the context of WoW. If they don't, I usually don't. However, I have no problem with other people doing so. It's all up to the individual. Of course, you might wind up with a lore nazi riding your arse over it, if you aren't careful. ^_~

I'd say so, for the most part. Now, things with absolutely NO redeeming quality to RPing would be a bad idea, but seeing as how there isn't a music lore or provided hymns or anything, it seems like the logical conclusion.
Besides, ever heard of Shadowrun? Two words: Orc Rock.

So long as the music doesn't have referrences to events/people/things in the real world, I think that would be completely acceptable.

Mm, when I was playing Alliance I had a human female warlock who was based completely off the song The Cruel Sister (http://ula-kapala.art.pl/spiewnik/songs/pl/cruel_sister.html) and wandered around SW singing it to herself one day.
I think it all depends on the context.

Gloomberry used to sing the Cure's Love Cats quite often, which is pretty sad for a single cat to do. I got some stares, a lot of "WTF dood?!", a few people danced with me, but no one had me with cream.
And yes, I'm still posting. I aim to ding 200 posts before I disappear from your WoW lives indefinitely ...

Too big a grey area, though instincitvely I voted no, but I'm reconsidering. .. Yeah, I can see a few songs that I'd use in-game..
AND! Completely off the topic: .. vote for my story! :D :P

((From a strict RP POV, absolutely not. But, as has been pointed out so many times here and elsewhere, RP is generally what you want it to be and shouldn't be limited to what someone else thinks is/isn't acceptable (Manus :P  ).))

I'll say that most of the choices of music I've seen folks sing were not what I'd consider appropriate for an RP environment. It's usually some kinda rap or something with references to Compton and the like. I do recall seeing someone sing "Eye of the Tiger" after a Rend/Ony kill and wishing they'd broke up the stanzas properly. Would've looked pretty cool if they'd put a few more seconds effort into it.
Still, I voted "no", simply because I don't want to encourage folks to copy/paste other people's creativity and call it RP.

It depends on the song. Some songs sure. Others no. Someone singing a britney spears song? Hell no. Some dwarf singing a celtic folk song? Maybe.
As a result I do not vote in poll woe is me.

You can always say you wrote the song.

I don't see why not. The Blizzard universe has a lot of Real World elements in it. Dancing on the IC/OOC border with regards to humor is often entertaining.

I voted yes, but with stipulations..
Like others mentioned, it all depends on context. Singing "Love Cats" while sauntering around SW is harmless as far as I'm concerned, it just sets a mood or characterizes a personality trait.
Standing on a rooftop and singing "Stairway to Heaven" in memory of Rhowen does not. (not that anyone did that... just using that to illustrate a point).
I like the original stuff though. Grooda's song was golden IMHO..
Now, here's a twist.. have any of you made a song association with someone before? For example: ever since I first saw Karkarov's sig box, I associate him with the Kenny Wayne Sheppard song, "Blue on Black." Not sure why, I just do..

I use real world music. Jug of This is about drinking. It fits.
Then my rendition of Galway Bay, retitled Baradin Bay for WoW, is also RL music.
But I'm a folk-celtic type person anyway.

Blackrock and roll!
That's what I call it. I do include some drinking songs at random, and other times I just rewrite some parts of a song to make it fit. However, it's usually just to be humorous.
(( It's fine, depending on the song, as so many have said. Sometimes a lyric can be modified to fit better, too. In a world where the humans do the macarena and the nightelves dance like Michael Jackson, I think we have some leeway :) If it fits the occasion and the mood, and doesn't contain references to RL people and places, why not? Music is the universal language, they say. ))
