View Full Version : Worthwhile Mods?
I'm downloading and reinstalling the game (lost my CDs :( ) And wondering what mods are worth getting. I know there are a few "MUST HAVE" ones, and I'd like to know what you guys think would be helpful or just plain cool to have.
Also, for class specific ones, I'm rolling a rogue.

I don't use any map mods except for quest helper.
when you've done these quests a zillion times like I have.. not having to go to thottbot or wowhead is a time saving thing.
critman just for fun

Currently I use:
Deadly Boss Mods
Atlas Loot Enhanced
FlagRSP2
WIM (WoW Instant Messenger)
I also have a couple of raid boss specific mobs that my guild mandated be used during recent trips to TK, specifically VoidReaverAlarm and SolarianAlarm, but like DBM, they don't pop up until a raid boss is within a certain range, or I enter a raid instance.
Currently I'm looking for a new UI that will give me more clickable buttons on my UI, but won't obscure things like my pet's hunger icon on my hunter. X-Perls was nice, but it covered up that icon and I almost lost my lynx a couple times because I couldn't see he his icon had gone from green to yellow when he died, which it then went to red.
I'm also looking for a WinAmp type mod that'll play my music playlists in WoW without me having to alt-tab out to pick a song or click play.
Wow! so many mods I've never even heard of! @_@

Maybe this? http://www.curse.com/downloads/details/3444/
I've been configuring FuBar for a couple nights now, I'm liking it more than Titan. Just gotta find more add-ons for it than the built in Titan ones. I'd also like to look into X-Perl and Bartender. I had x-perl for a bit, but confused me in its stock mode more than not so I got rid of it before I really dug into it. Seemed like it wasn't really built for a solo / non-raid person by default.

Nice man, thanks. I'll save that link for later, since I doubt this crappy wireless at my college will let me even log onto WoW or stay on long enough to even try it out.
X-perl was a nice interface... but again, I didn't like how it overlapped icons over my pet's hunger icon. Might be good for other classes, but I'd've been livid if I had lost a pet I'd had since level 10 because of it. I use the default for now, and have just kind of mastered switching between trays in questing, raiding, and pvp.
I guess it'd be perfect for all the other classes, since most don't have pets, and the others that do don't have to monitor and feed them.

Whoo boy.
Interface
-xperl: pretty pretty animated unit frames
-Bongos: tidy up those action bars, set transparency, size, anything
-Chinchilla: turn your map into different shapes, see coordinates, also lets you move things like world info to a different place
-MetaHUD: a nice heads-up display (puts your and your target's health and mana in curved bars around your character for easy reference)
-Parrot: a more customizable scrolling combat text, plus you can set warnings to pop up for pretty much anything, including when spells are ready (quit staring at your buttons!)
-Quartz: fancies up your cast bar, shows latency, and your swing timer and GCD, among other things like some buffs, debuffs, and casts from your focus or target
-PowerAuras: I just got this mod and it's effing awesome. Lets you set certain patterns to appear around your character when you're missing, or have, certain buffs or debuffs. Missing Righteous Fury on my pally? Big white rune pattern appears. Got a haste buff on my hunter and need to change rotations? A red glow appears, gets brighter the more haste buffs that stack. The possibilities are pretty endless.
Raid/Instance
-Omen: best threatmeter ever, will be even better in 2.4
-BigWigs or DeadlyBossMods: calls out warnings when bosses do stuff, yup
-SWStats: way better than DamageMeters, lighter than Recount, it works for me
-ora2: I really only use it for the main target frames, but it can be pretty handy
-MobInfo2: stores lots of info for mobs, most useful for mob health, but can also tell you a lot about drops and such
Social
-FlagRSP2: set your first and last name, title, and description for other people using an RP mod to see, and in/out of character tags and such
-Prat: very nice way to clean up and sort your chat -- change fonts, save channel colors, sort channels, just ignore all the crap that makes no sense
-Elephant: Prat can do logs too, but Elephant does them better
-WIM: makes AIM-like windows for all your whispers, logs, shares info with other WIM users, omg get this mod
-HoloFriends: sorta expands your friends list, it can only do so much, but it's better than nothing
Misc
-Atlas/Atlasloot: dungeon maps, and all PvP, faction, and dungeon loot for viewing, linking, and seeing what drops where
-Auctioneer: stores large amounts of data about going prices for things, saves you a lot of trouble figuring out how much to put something up for
-ItemRack: quick equipment switcher, I use it to switch between raid and RP gear tidily, also good for non-RP purposes for all you crazy hybrid classes
Hunter
-zHunter: can't-live-without hunter mod, especially for beginning mod users; makes a button each for your aspects, tracking, pet abilities, and traps. I only use the aspect and pet ones now but if you have no other mods and are a hunter, you'll love this space saver. Also does a couple other nice things like tranq shot announcements, automatically turning off cheetah/pack, and an auto shot timer if you don't have one. Oh and it gives you an auto strip button, haha. Not so handy now that you can't drop combat in boss fights, but if you ever fall off a cliff... what? It happens to me okay?!
-ICU or Personal Sentry: what makes tracking worthwhile. The new colors for dots are nice but either of these mods will also store up a database of mobs and players you've targeted so that when you mouse over them on the minimap, it'll also tell you their class and level. Both of them aren't quite perfect but once you use a tracking mod, you won't want to live without one.
Other mods I hear about but don't use
-Gatherer or Cartographer: great for plotting out where herb or ore "nodes" are
-TitanBar or FuBar: basically works like a base for plugging in other mods, and puts a bar with some data like bagspace, gold, and repair status at the top or bottom of your screen
-NaturEnemy Cast Bars: shows you who's casting what pretty much anywhere, keeps track of cooldowns, CC effect durations, and mob respawn timers... little too clunky for me though, might try it again after it gets rewritten
-Alternate RP mods like MyRoleplay or ImmersionRP
-Alternate unitframes mods like Pitbull, and Grid for raid frames
-Clique: great for binding spells to mousebuttons, this and Grid are pretty much a must-have for raid healers
-Various quest helper mods
Screenshot: http://tnraiders.org/forums/download.php?id=594&mode=view
Slightly out of date, I've changed a lot since then to tidy up because it was a bit crazy. I got rid of party frames while in raid and moved the main target frames down above the raid frames. On my HUD I turned off buff/debuffs on the target, numerical values, and the spellcast note. Also got SCT and PowerAuras since then; I have damage/healing taken and debuffs curving around the left side of my HUD, and damage done curving around the right, with buffs and healing done by me scrolling up starting at the top of the HUD. Oh and I moved my focus frame up and the world info box down, and the misc action bars on the right side are smaller and there're a few more spaces now. I'll try to remember to post a new screenshot when I get home tonight, trust me, it's a lot nicer now.

Gathermate is better than Gatherer and Cartographer.

-NaturEnemy Cast Bars: shows you who's casting what pretty much anywhere, keeps track of cooldowns and mob respawn timers... little too clunky for me though, and I heard it won't be supported after 2.4 anyway
I'm going to cry if this stops working. It shows stuns, saps, and dots too, and just about anything else that has a duration.
Another nice rogue one is SliceWatcher. It's just a big bar that ticks down the time left on your SnD and plays a sound when it runs out.
A lot of the mods people listed are for raiding, so you won't need them for leveling. For my leveling rogue, I use NECB, and Omen and Recap for instances. I leave Pitbull and Slicewatcher turned on too, but those are mainly for my level 70 characters.

Might be good for other classes, but I'd've been livid if I had lost a pet I'd had since level 10 because of it.
In my short time as a hunter (level 26 or so), I used the Feed-o-matic mod. IIRC, it had an option to automatically feed your pet when needed, either at yellow or orange / red, whatever you wanted, whatever type of food (consumable for profs or not), etc. And it gave a little emote when it happened, too.

Don't believe that mod works anymore.

Clique has been outdated since BC. He wrote a whole new program called Klik, which I still use even though it hasn't been updated in quite a few months. I really really hope this mod won't be abandoned...I'll be lost without it and then I'd actually have to level up one of my gazillion alts.

A few other good ones..
PVP - VanaKos (kos list)
Damage Meters
Outfitter (I like this one better than item rack, seems to be more intuitive)
here's a good question.. how much memory do your addons take up?
mine is at 25.91
I have critman, auctioneer, Atlasloot, Questhelper, Epeen, and Myroleplay2 running. I do not use any UI mods that change my UI, for some reason I like the default pretty well.

XPERL2 - awesome interface mod that makes game look pretty, also helps with raiding.
FUBAR - another awesome interface mod and it is compatable with XPERL, helps with raiding, questing, pretty much everything. (example of a FUBAR mod: questFU)
MRP - my roleplay is a nice roleplay mod you can set your character profs etc etc.
Damage Meters - why do I need to explain this?
OMEN - it's a threat meter, need I say more?
ATLAS - this is a nice mod that has a lot of added on stuff depending on the version you download. The basic gives you maps of instances battleground etc. and Points of interest. You can download stuff that gives you loot lists, overhead maps, flight paths, instance locations, etc. etc.

Clique works fine Tin, I use it on my druid for raiding, because I KNOW how to clicktarget, lifebloon, clicknewtarget, lifebloom.. and Clique just takes the "Click target" part out.
dont listen to these -bad UI can't see anything cause your player frames and hotbars are in the way- people:
Pitbull - UI frames that are light weight and don't take up alot of memory, their fairly easy to use, look nice, and dont take up half your screen like xpearl does.
Prat- Simplified chat box that helps you identify what class/level people are, gives you the option to mouse scroll up and down, etc etc.
Fubar - cause its low memory, easy to use, looks nice, and there are TONS of plug in mods for it.
Omen- for threat, your going to want this as a rogue.
Bartender3 - for sleek, sexy bars with out taking up THE WHOLE SCREEN (*coughlovelycough*)
SWStats- dps moniter. Use it, love it.
Quartz - sleek cast bars that calculate for computer/internet lag. Customizable.
Chronometer - this is a spell timer, for dots or hots. If your a rogue you probably don't need this, but its nice for me, to know how long lifebloom has left, or if you're going to die to my moonfire tick or not!
Grid - Raid frames that tell you everything from what kind of debuff x raid member has to who's got agro, and who's getting heals, etc etc. Its low mem, customisable, and great for healers.
Deadly Boss Mods - because orin says I have to have it in order to raid ;p I love it.
Simple Minimap - cause I wanna have the option of moving my mini map to a different corner, shape it different, or make it smaller or bigger, damnit!
Outfitter - screw Itemrack. Outfitter is fun, you can set it up to put on outfits automaticly depending on the place you're at or the form you're in, or even if you're riding your mount! Want a spell damage outfit? open "create new outfit" and set it to "spell damage" WHAM, instantly puts on the best spell damage gear possible. Works for everything :D
SCT - because the blizzard scrolling combat text sucks.
Elkanos Buff Bars - keeps track of your buffs and debuffs in a nice, blue bar'd box :D
I'm pretty sure that's all of them. In any case, the result is this:
http://vanwagnerhouse.com/WoWScrnShot_030608_234856.jpg
Heidenreich's version is cleaner, cause he's obsessive, but overall, Its all about "Maximizing you're screen". Its just not worth rping, if I can only see you from waist up ;p

Well, I switched to FuBar over the weekend, and everything was working fine until last night when I kept getting errors for all the plug-ins and non-plug ins. :( I don't look forward to reinstalling and setting up everything.
Lisbet
03-19-2008, 09:54 AM
The easiest way to avoid having to look at errors is two fold:
Make sure you've the most updated version of a mod.
Turn off error messages in the Interface Options tab!:D
Brevus
03-19-2008, 10:08 AM
I would have, but I kept getting progressive errors with each mod I ended up disabling. Even some updated versions were getting errors when used together, mainly when attached to FuBar 3.0. Strange thing is it only started last night after a couple days of nothingness. The game even crashed twice once the errors popped up.
Perhaps it's time to clear the WTF folder as well. wtf? :D
Keraph

Clear WTF, nuke your mods and reinstall them. Cleanest way to do it.
I used to use a ton of mods. THey blew up at one point long ago after a big patch, and since then I've decided to go almost completely modless. This has changed a bit as some become almost mandatory (like omen), but overall I don't like too much clutter.

This reminds me. Anyone know of a solid mod that keeps track of friends/enemies. In the past, I thought such mods were dumb since Grim = Friends, and Not Grim = Enemies, but I find myself in need of keeping track of you horrible lawbreakers in Silvermoon, and notepad is failing me.

Jayneway, I was thinking of starting a thread here somewhere that lists people we have contact with. From the people that grief the rp (ie, cartel targets :P) to people that rp it out either with compliance or non-compliance.
We can make it like reports from Law Enforcement, with the info on the encounter and the subsequent actions. Obviously you dont have to log everything, but the good ones should be rp'd up!

Better screenshots:
http://renedreamer.com/wow/SS-IntSel.jpg - with a target selected, you can see two auras on me right now. The yellow lines are because Hunter's Mark isn't up, the blue because Scorpid Sting isn't. With no target the HUD and auras vanish entirely.
http://renedreamer.com/wow/SS-IntBat.jpg - in combat, you can see some SCT action here. Probably need to fiddle with it a bit more.
Lightheaded and TomTom. If you don't have those two add-ons you need to stop playing the game until they're installed. Lightheaded pulls quest information directly from Wowhead and TomTom places waypoints on your map.
Makes questing a breeze.
