When you choose a name for your characters do you normally choose one from arabic?
The names that i have seen so far that have a meaning in Arabic/Urdu/Hindi are:
1. Talwar
2. Iqbal
3. Nouri
4. Jin
5. Khalid
Its odd too see so many non-western names. I mean i specifically choose mine, my question is do you guys?
Xeran
06-07-2006, 11:41 AM
When I pick a name, the process varies.
Xeran: Darrin -> Darin ->Xarin -> Xeran
Ajanon: I don't know what I was thinking. Not a bad name, but totally out of my ass.
A lot of the time, I'll use the name generator and keep hitting it until something comes up I can work with.
I also recently created a Troll Hunter (and my first female toon) on Thorium Brotherhood. Her name is Leilun - I wanted something like "Lupa," whom inspired the character, but different enough to be ... well ... different.

I sure don't. I wouldn't recognize Arabic if it slapped me around and ordered me to make it a sammich.
My names all come off the cuff. I make the character, imagine an identity for it, then name it accordingly.
Gannarak

I just bunch up random syllables, and make it sound like a member of the race I'm playing. Since I dont know the WoW lore too well, it was difficult to apply this logic to WoW. Gannarak came as the only choice for my hunter. I have a mage called Doresain, but that's a stolen name from DnD (the king of ghouls). I also wanted to do a Warlock called Saminga...

Caelyn

For the most part I choose a name that fits something in my character, I don't really care about where the name came from. So I go for meaning more than origin.
Caelyn- Always loved
Annabelle- Grace and Beauty
Vilmah
06-07-2006, 12:27 PM
Arabic names are the best, in my opinion. Najme is Arabic. I know this, because I picked it myself from a list of Arabic baby girl names. :D
Vilmah I created saying "Wilma" with a Russian accent, 'cuz I like the name Wilma and thought it sounded Orc-like.

behindthename.com is what I use. Huge store of names from all over the damn place.
Garbhan means 'little rough one' which is quite accurate for my character, eh?

At least you made a really cool story to explain your name :D
Rasta
06-07-2006, 12:41 PM
The logic behind my name really doesn't need explaining, i believe. However, I will do so for my good friend Justin Case.
I'm a troll -> trolls are based off Jamaican/Caribbean people -> Jamaica is largely Rastafarian -> I don't like long names -> Rasta is the shortened version of Rastafarian -> therefore, my name is Rasta.
Also, I hopped on this server 20 minutes after going live and reserved several names, including this one, which is how I have it.
Teelia
06-07-2006, 01:04 PM
I had an aristocrat/rogue named Teelia Gazee that I played in D20 Kingdoms of Kalimar. I picked the name from their chart of random names for the region. She was always one of my favorite characters, so I reserved the name on this server.

Keisori - Name generator
Celcia - Those who Hunt elves. Great Anime, Elf named Celcia in it. Took name only
Shigana - no Clue. Started with Anias, then messed around with it
Alot of people think my chars names have a somewhat asain flair to them
I also like to grab names out of odd places. Like Zero Bosses
Mortica
06-07-2006, 01:11 PM
When I rolled on TN, I had no idea it was going to become my main. I honestly figured it be like most whim alts and get to level 5 and then be abandoned.
So I picked something fun and not so rp-ish: Morticia. But it was taken already, so then I played around with other names, but I really wanted Morticia (yes, it makes me ashamed now :P) and it occurred to me to drop the second i.
Thus Mortica was born.
On a funny sidenote, my real name is Monica and I honestly don't think I made the connection between how similar the names were until I started doing groups.
[party] Mortica, go sap that
Not having the best eyesight in the world anymore (getting old sucks), I totally saw
[party] Monica, go sap that
and I was all about to type "how the @#$#@$@# do you know what my real name is!!!!!!!"
and then I figured it out
and felt like an idiot :P

Hifazat

Both of my names are taken from Urdu, my mother tongue. Sipah means solider - apt for a Paladin. Hifazat means protection. My character plays to protect the alliance in a very narrow-minded view point.

Fallacy
06-07-2006, 08:11 PM
Herenth calls himself the Fallacy, in that he believed that his life was a lie, being that its inevitable end would mean he lost everything, which he did. So, being reborn as a new being, he sought to end the lie, to liberate others from that state. Only after becoming a Watcher did he change that goal. Instead, he now fights to end the corruption and suffering that comes with life, even though he sometimes regrets the means he uses. Absalom (his last name) is taken from the Bible, one of King David's sons, who betrayed and killed his father.
Erysi
06-08-2006, 12:02 AM
Erysi Lath'un is actually a Dark Elvish name, but since Dark Elves don't y'know.. Exist in Azeroth, it doesn't matter.. It's just a cool name.. ^_^ Erysi doesn't really mean anything, but her last name is the combination of the Dark Elvish words for Dark and Light, Olath and Sussun.
Rhowen-Prea
06-08-2006, 08:19 AM
Rhowen's name was originally Amavand, 'Van for short. This was over on Scarlet Crusade. When the character got recreated on TN, I wanted something masculine and smashy sounding, and something different. So I tried to come up with something that fit. Rowan was taken. Rowen was taken. Rhowan was taken. Rhowen...
I still really wanted "Rowan." But Rho she is and Rho she will stay. H saves the day!
Syreena
06-08-2006, 08:19 AM
Sometimes, I'll take a name I like or from the name generator and change it around a little bit or add letters. Serena became Syreena.
A lot of times, I'll look up Latin or Greek or some other language, real or not, words for a word that fits something about the character, then twist it to make it sound like a name. For example, Lanista, the name of my night elf hunter, has something to do with causing riots and animals to attack.
I've also noticed, that almost all of my character names, ever, end in "a" or "ah." Weird.

THey say it's best to name your children with names that end in a vowel so that the name carries when you yell it. ^_~
Daedraug
06-08-2006, 09:16 AM
Yeah, Daedraug is DnD elven I believe, elven either way. I have a legion of characters with names pilfered from the GRR Martin books waiting for me to hit 60 so I can take advantage of them. That's the only place I've ever blatantly stole from. Usually I refer to names from whatever real-world culture I see the character bearing a resemblance to.
Danyxandra
06-08-2006, 09:20 AM
I've been playing mmorpg's for 7 years through 13 games. Getting shot down time after time after time at the naming process because everyone thinks up the same thing led me to the family of "dan". My RL name is Danyka (DAN-ick-ah). For the last 4 years I've used "dan" as a prefix for all my characters and slapped on a variety of suffixes to it and never ever get shot down at character creations anymore.
I've got Danlily, Danlyra, Danliu, Danykalla, Danissa, Danji, Danjil, Danzyn, Danfyra, and the list continues. I got a million "dan" names listed in the back of my little gaming notebook. I'm getting a little tired of the "dan" prefix though and started on the "Jaz" prefix with Jazmina. I can take it to Jazmira, Jazriel, Jazanna, Jazina, Jazdira, etc.
Just pick a prefix you like and go to town with suffix swapping.
Noury
06-08-2006, 09:50 AM
In answer to the original question, Yes it was totally planned..
Nouri = "Light"
It just fit.... and it rolls well off the tongue..
I always put some thought into the names I choose. In this case I did what I often do, that is take a look at stellar names ( Like Castor or Pollux.. ) . It just so happens a lot of stars carry Arabic names.
A long time ago I had a human warrior on Windrunner. I named him Ruprecht, as he was stupid. That was directly from "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and Ruprecht, the Monkey Boy.
I even made a macro for him to /yell "Oklahoma! Oklahoma! " when he charged..

To be honest, I did not have any idea what the name Iqbal meant. It was the name a Pakistani co-worker I had once, and I found it to fit my character very well. Additionally then name is concise, which I value for any character I have.
