Anyone else experiencing server lag issues? It's gotten so bad, I haven't been able to play at all for the past few days! Am I alone, here?

I think a lot of people have from what I've heard. I was lagging really badly the back end of last week - someone told me it had to do with Blizzard doing some stuff behind th scenes - don't ask me what, I only play the thing, I have no idea what makes it work. For what it's worth, I just logged in, hung around in Stormwind and went and did some work on my house 'til the lag went away. Not had any problems this weekend.

Yeah, I'm aware that Blizz and their network people are doing hardware upgrades and changing things around, so that probably is the cause..

As I have been telling everybody in the Alliance OOC channel:

DON'T TALK ABOUT IT AND MAYBE IT WILL GO AWAY.

kthx

Y'know it's not so much an inconvenience as I just can't play. Period. It won't let me in, and when it does, I'm in for three minutes before I get disconnected from the server.

I'm paying for a game I can't play. =(

When I first started, it was really bad. Thursday I believe. My latency went from 70 to 1664. It fixed itself after about 15 minutes. Since then, I only have random experiences with it.

I read that they were converting over to new hardware and that it would be a bit before they got the kinks out.

Its a patch they made you download behind your game. I always alt+tab out when my game lags - i do it to make sure my PC is not over heating.

I noticed a 100 mb download being taken for wow on my PC - it was called behind the "something" download.

That is what is causing the lag for 90% of the people.

Check if the Blizzard downloader is running in your background when you play the game.

Those downloads are actually the new patch, coming in before the major update on maitenence, so the service isn't heavily congested with several people trying to download it. It took me about three minutes to download 127 MB. Much better than what it usually takes on patch days.

my latency hit 15,595 w/o the downloader running.

*sigh*

This horrible background downloader has been at 0% for days. *shakes fist* Will this affect my downloading of the actual patch?

It shouldnt effect the patch according to this (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aww01954p) it is just to help make the actual patch faster so I assume if it doesnt finish downloading before the patch it's meant to supplement then the patch will just end up being bigger on the patch day

Are any files left behind after a background downloader patch is run?

The background downloader cleans up any data files left behind after a patch has been executed.

I, too, have been getting some loss of bandwidth from the downloader but I have been getting some bad lag/spikes all weekend, even after this downloader completed, 2k+ latency of server pings, though probably having to do with the new hardware mentioned above.

Dialup ftl.

I have told the background downloader to go away at least twice. I logged in the other day and had 15k ms lag due to that thing. But yes, I'm use to lag spikes and lag in general, for me 500-800ms is normal. The spikes and such have been worse recently. Case in point: my magelet was fighting a quillboar hunter in the barrens yesterday and when she attacked it was on the edge of her fireball range, and it's wolf was a good 10 meters from it on my screen. So I killed them both and was running around in a 20m circle trying for figure out WHERE they actually were so that I could hit them with spells. I logged out after they died and back in to find them behind me, where I had started attacking them. That sort of thing has happened a couple times. Oh, and the loot lag and vendor lag of late has been crappy too. Twenty seconds to receive loot from something is ridiculous.

I'm use to lagging some, esp. in lagrimmar (around the bank/ah), and on occason my dialup will overload and i'll drop to the char select screen or login screen and be able to hop right back in, but I hope what's been going on recently is the hardware stuff.

Patch: can anyone supply me with a direct dl link when it comes out? I haven't been able to download from filefront recently, keeps giving me some session error. (dialup isn't very good for torrents, and my previous isp blocked them altogether. a direct dl for 100mb i can get in a day or two, on a torrent it takes most of a week)
