Hey, I just joined up. I thought I'd share a WoW-related project I've been working on. It's a travelogue of the World of Warcraft, as told by an undead mage named Destron. Deston isn't badly decayed, so with some effort he can pass as a sickly looking human, so both Alliance and Horde territories are open to him. The travelogue is mostly speculation and creative license on my part, though I've been careful to avoid contradicting lore (and if I did this in any places, my apologies). It goes into the culture, society, history and daily life of Azeroth's inhabitants, so if that sort of thing interests you it should be worth a look. There are a lot of screenshots as well. You can find them here:

There is no other word to descrive that other than exelence, and even that is not enough.
Fantastic Work!
It must have taken you many hours to accomplish that, it is very nicely done. You should publish it a bit more and perhaps Blizzard will take notice of it and put it in the community section.

Enjoy!
I submit these for sticky, lest they get lost in the dusty forum archives..
Perhaps form a single Lore sticky zone, to include these, and some of the other lore related stuff like Manus' troll lore, the language thread, etc..

I wonder if we'll have more of these again?
mrodar
03-11-2007, 01:53 AM
Yes! You will! There are two reasons for the delay: 1) I did some extensive editing upon the travelogue, mostly in regards to grammatical issues (though I'm sure it's still rife with bad grammar) and 2) I got distracted by the Burning Crusade. I have explored Outland to my satisfaction, and am a few pages away from finishing the next section of the travelogue.
Also, the edited versions of North Kalimdor 3 and Central Kalimdor have not yet been uploaded. The links are currently broken, but I will replace them once the edited versions are in place.

Feathermoon.bethandorion.com is going back to the old feathermoon.net domain name, so I'm going to change the URLs accordingly. Also, I'm going to put all the URLs in the first post, mostly for the sake of convenience. I will post notices on the thread for future updates, however.
New sections will be up soon. Right now there's been some technical problems, especially in regards to this domain name business, but I think we're almost out of the woods. I've already finished the next section, and am half-done with the one after that.

I'm sorry if the PDF format is causing trouble. Right now I don't really have the time (nor do I want to spend the money) hosting a website, but I'll see what I can do about getting it in HTML format. It's high time I do that anyway.
In other news, I'm pleased to announce the latest section of the travelogue, covering Tanaris, Un'goro Crater, and Silithus!
http://feathermoon.net/images/felya/SouthKalimdor2.pdf
The next section may take a little while, as I need to finish another project that I've been postponing.
Also, I want to let everyone know that you don't have to read the entire travelogue from beginning to end. I know it's a very long work, so if you're just curious about one or two zones, you can skip straight ahead and read what you want. There might be a little bit of confusion, but I think it will basically be comprehensible. I'm going to put this notice in the first post as well, for the benefit of newcomers.

If you're creating these in Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer, you can most likely choose to save them as an HTML file (or possibly export them as an HTML file) from the program itself. I am willing and able to host HTML versions of them on my website as well, if you wish - I have the time and (I think) space to devote to such a project. If I don't have the space, I can possibly re-compress the images or ask my administrators for some more space (don't know how they'll respond to that, though). Just let me know if you're interested.
EDIT: Oh and uh, they're awesome. =P I haven't finished reading them yet, but they're definitely INCREDIBLY helpful for the stuff I'm currently writing. You win the awesome award, if there is one.

A lot of people have been having problems with PDF. Thus I've started to put the travelogue up on a blog. Right now only the Lordaeron sections are up. The blog version has fewer pictures, due to space constraints, and I'm trying to figure out if I can create downloadable PDF links for people to get the full picture version.
If there is a file type that would be better than PDF, by all means tell me. I use Adobe InDesign to write the travelogue, and not very many people could download an .indd file successfully.
Thanks for reading.

If you need help with HTML I would GLADLY do it for you in my free time. I took a class in my sophmore year and I understand it pretty good. with the simplicity of it I doubt we're going to have to go to XML or anything else. So if you want I can do it for you and maybe even send you a message that gives you the basic codes etc. to put up your own afterwards.
Also don't use word
use notepad for HTML, gets rid of that fucking autocomplete problem. Type the written part in word first to spellcheck and then paste it in between the code in notepad.

Actually, it looks like he's using blogspot or wordpress or something, so he shouldn't really need HTML at all if that's the case. They use a tagging system for their back-end, much like these forums do. At least, I *think* they do...

It's quite possible I'm misremembering the quote. It's in reference to a scene in which Daria reluctantly agreed to get in bed with one of the main male characters, upon which he pulls out his wallet and asks whether she preferred a regular or neon condom.
I suppose that's enough off topic for me, though. I've been meaning to read a bit more of your stuff for awhile now, and recently I've found enough free time that I just might. Should be fun. :D
mrodar
10-01-2009, 01:20 AM
Ooh, I feel a little embarrassed that I missed that. I have an excuse though: I never caught Daria on it's MTV run. Instead, I saw the butchered version broadcast on the N. They censored the oddest things on Daria, and they flat out refused to show some episodes.
I'm guessing the quote comes from the episode where she discusses going "all the way" with Tom. Of course, she chooses not sleep with him, which makes the N's decision to censor the episode all the more baffling.
It gets even weirder when you consider the fact that the N also broadcasts Degrassi: The Next Generation. I've never seen the show, but the ads made it seem like every episode dealt with pregnant teens on drugs. But apparently Daria's refusal to use hard drugs or have sex will corrupt our children. Or something.

I know I may be the millionth person to say this, but it's absolutely incredible.
For years I have been interested in reading up on the lore of this game - and I simply couldn't get into researching it.
This gives the world LIFE. A way to understand details and histories, race relations, and every day facts - and it's FUN and exciting to read.
I actually exited game and read through the first few sections last night. I woke up this morning and wanted to continue reading this.
You know it's good when it becomes more addicting than WoW itself.
mrodar
11-29-2009, 04:04 PM

I didn't say I'd stop doing the travelogue. It just won't be first priority as of March of next year. Basically the plan is to write one short story each month that has no relation to WoW or any other fandom. With the time left over, I'll probably continue updating, at least through Northrend. Conceivably I might even be able to update twice a month, though don't count on this.

Ignas
01-31-2010, 01:39 PM
I like the details put into the scenery. The landscapes and areas are painted very well with words. It's easy for me to imagine it, but, it's probably also made easier because I've been to those places, as well. The perspective of how things are larger than what the game displays is very good. I often forget that things are not necessarily drawn to scale in the world, and I think you do a very good job with descriptions in that regard.
It's hard for me to think of something I don't like, actually. Some parts of the readings can become a bit long and drawn-out, somewhat tedious to read through, but I've experienced that many times while reading books and stories, so maybe it's just me. So, yeah, not too much to complain about.
I don't find it lacking much in any regard. There are some things that made me curious as to how you came up with them. Where some things appear in established lore versus your own take on how things are. Then again, I may have missed them while questing many months ago. But, it's also not really a bad thing. I like the creativity I see, so it's mostly just a curiosity I have.
mrodar
01-31-2010, 02:06 PM
If you're curious as to what is an idea of my own invention vs. something from established lore, you can usually find out by visiting Wowwiki. Nine times out of ten, if it's not mentioned there, it's something I cooked up for the travelogue.

Hey! I love your posts, and I'm using them constantly for RP, and general learning of stuff. They're absolutely brilliant, a wonder to read-- major awesome points to you Mrodar.
I do have a request though. Can you do Mount Hyjal, if you ever get the time? :3 It's an awesome part of lore, and to learn more of hte zone would be interesting indeedly!
mrodar
02-05-2010, 08:59 PM
Thanks, Cytiana!
My understanding is that Mt. Hyjal will be introduced in Cataclysm. I am not sure if I will do the new Cataclysm zones or not. It depends on how much inspiration I feel from them, and how much time I have.
As of March I'll start putting more energies into original fiction. I won't stop the travelogue; I promised to finish Northrend, and I'm holding myself to it. Plus, writing the travelogue is just too fun to stop now. However, I might only be updating once a month. I may be able to do two updates a month, but don't count on it.
If I do decide to cover the Cataclysm zones, however, rest assured that Mt. Hyjal will be one of them.

The way you wrote made it possible for me to understand some of what went on -- that way if anything happened while my toon was in the area, at the time, the history of her being there isn't botched.
I reread your Feralas article today, and then plugged off into like six different pages of Night elf lore, simply because I felt like a. learning, and b. spicing up Cytiana's journal with a little deeper thought on some issues.
When I rerealized how awesome your articles were for helping design character RP, I reccomended them to someone I know, for dwarf Rp, facepalming at myself for not doing so sooner!
And huzzah for Hyjal!

Thanks. If anyone reading the travelogue enjoys it, by all means share it with your friends. So far, I know of at least one active guild that uses the travelogue (specifically the entries on the draenei) as a basis. I believe it's Ere Argus on MoonGuard-EU.
I'm still trying to get the travelogue out to more people, and I was thinking that WoW.com (not to be confused with WorldOfWarcraft.com) might be a good way to do that. They do a lot of interviews and similar things with notable fans. If you think the travelogue is worthy of it, I'd definitely appreciate if you went and recommended it. I'll probably put up a request on the next update for this as well.
As always, thanks for reading.

The 15 Minutes of Fame column (http://www.wow.com/category/15-minutes-of-fame/) would probably be your best bet, although you'd think the RP column would work also. I know some people here tried to get the RP columnist to recognize some work one of our former members did and the attempts were completely ignored as far as I know.
They have a form for 15 minutes at http://www.wow.com/tips so I'd probably go that route.
I should probably add: make sure your webhosting is capable of handling the sheer volume of hits you'll get if and when you get linked from there before actively chasing that :)

If you're curious as to what is an idea of my own invention vs. something from established lore, you can usually find out by visiting Wowwiki. Nine times out of ten, if it's not mentioned there, it's something I cooked up for the travelogue.
It's not so much that I can't determine what's your idea or what's established, but more along the lines of what your inspiration might be. An example would be the biology of the Iron Dwarves. I'm curious as to how you came up with that. Among other things, as well. =)

Okay, thanks. I'll check that out in a bet. I wasn't sure how they decided to include such things, whether it was by plebiscite or something else.

Ah. Most of my inspiration comes from real world history and events. As for the iron dwarf biology, I figured that if they were made out of solid metal, they'd be invulnerable to any form of physical attack. Since that's clearly not the case in-game, I came up with the idea of giving them "organs" of softer metals. Sufficient damage to those would kill or incapacitate the iron dwarf. It also hinted as to how they were unknowingly corrupted by the Curse of Flesh.
Feel free to ask any such questions; it's fun to answer them. Maybe I should add some annotations to the travelogue...

Here's the newest section:
http://destron.blogspot.com/2010/02/crystalsong-forest.html
In addition to dealing with Crystalsong Forest, this chapter also explores the narrator's personal history. Please tell me how well I did that. Thanks.

>< Someone beat me to the punch on this, I was writing a similar idea from a traveling goblins perspective . . .
Nicely written though.

Hey, Azeroth's a big world. Plenty of room for more travelogues from other perspectives.

I suppose, but that also means me not being lazy (I started it like a year ago and am still not done, not even sure I still have it >.>) Loses some flair as second out the gates :P

These things can surprise you. I started the travelogue as a lark, and never expected to get beyond the Alterac Mountains.

And it describes some of these places to the tee. Nicely put together list!

The lack of Conan The Barbarian songs in Howling Fjord makes me disappointed.
The Riddle of Steel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onGWF8mz1Zw) and Anvil of Crom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHDmXtW9Yx0&feature=related) were on loop while I was in that zone.

There are two updates tonight. First is a section describing the narrator's encounter with Emette. Dalaran: Part 2 comes after that.
http://destron.blogspot.com/2010/03/emette.html
http://destron.blogspot.com/2010/03/dalaran-part-2.html
Note: I did actually write an original piece in addition to this, but I've chosen not to post it yet as I'm thinking about getting it published in a magazine. I'll keep you posted as to further developments.

The first part of the Borean Tundra has been completed.
http://destron.blogspot.com/2010/04/borean-tundra-part-1.html
I also added a little bit of information about Garithos in the Undercity section. I was originally going to put it in Borean Tundra, but realized it felt too much like a tangent. Just go to Undercity and do a command/control-F for Garithos.
