Your alt(s) in MD just tried to clean out the guild bank. I suggest checking to see if you got hacked. I'm hoping you did.

Yes, but they can also be unnecessarily damning to reputation. Obviously I'm going to have some interest in this outcome, but why not wait for the facts before putting names out there?

If it comes up bunk, then nothing is wrong. Name cleared, no black marks. Life will go on.
If it turns out to be something else, well, we are one step ahead of the game.
And there is no blame yet. She could have been hacked, right? If that is the case, we will all understand.

I think she did get hacked. I remember Rosalynd complaining a lot about 2.3 coming out this week since she'd be on vacation.

Report the behavior to a gm about it, that should flag the account to go on lockdown till she gets back and can call customer service about the hack.

I've investigated this enough to see that she is on vacation - and she has been hacked. She logged on the Grim for only a moment in Orgrimmar, where she is usually in Silvermoon.
Sorry, dear - but you have DAS BOOT from an OOC perspective until you get back. Nothing to roleplay about it; since I will (or another officer) bring you back in when you got your shit straightened out.
Unlike Nasuj... if somebody decides to hack a character in the Grim and steal our stuff - I will go to their house and kill their family with them watching. Then blame it on terrorists.
... private message also sent. Also see no problem with this post - if not a little less informative than I would of liked. Give me Walls 'O Text.

How are people getting hacked? Is it random or is there like websites that we shouldn't go visit. I understand the basis yah don't give your password out to anyone or your account information, etc etc.
Is it magic? Maybe sand gnomes hacking into the internets through a series of pipes?
Lascivious
11-17-2007, 11:47 AM
Visiting websites mostly. They get implanted with a key logging program that identifies the keys you press (my bank has a 'virtual keyboard' to help prevent that) and then presto they have your password and everything. One of my guild mates got hacked, cleared it up and the next day was hacked again. Why? Because the program also planted the virus on his computer and he did do a total system restore like we told him too. I'm pretty freaking paranoid about that stuff, that's another reason I don't have a lot of add-ons - I don't trust any of those sites.

Yup, she got hacked. She is out of town... she told me to log into her account for her. I had to reset her password- it was changed but luckily they didn't change the email... so I ended up getting a new password sent and changed it. When I log in, first thing I see is all of her characters naked. I go on Rosalynd.... all of her stuff is sold, everything in her bank... I look over multiple servers, pattern is the same. Also, the person decided it would be cool to glitch out one of her characters in Dire Maul- so she's falling, can't log out, can't exit the game, can't hearth, can't auto-unstuck.. I had to alt-f4 out. This did not seem like somebody out to get gold, this seemed more like a malicious attack to me... so right now I'm sitting and waiting on a GM ticket for her.

i had a moment once where i was knocked off line and couldnt get back on. It wasnt the "cant log in" due to a connection, I was not allowed to log in cause I was "already logged in." So I hopped on a friends account to check it my fears were true. Come to find out i was right, i was being hacked. I was a lucky one though, I was able to change my password within 5minutes of finding out and saved my character.
I logged back in and Cedes was in Ironforge and when I got kicked I was in AV. Nothing lost but if i was a few minutes late I would have been a nakie :(

Alright this is the update: I ran 4 different scanners. Adware, Windows Defender, AVG, and Antivir. I did a full system scan on all 4. Nothing was found. I also did a trick someone gave me to see if something was logging my keystrokes. Nothing.
I've come to the conclusion that it was just too convenant that I happened to be out of town at the time this happened. I have gone through and changed the passwords I had set for several of my services, including WoW.
One possibly me and Garthroga came up with over dinner was -- is it possible that someone/something on TNG is getting our TNG information and using it to try and find our WoW information? He said it could be possible someone hacked into the database where our information could be stored. I know my TNG information was the same as my WoW information at the time so this is entirely possible. I know I have heard several other TNG members getting hacked and so thus leads to my next question -- were all of your account information the same as your WoW information?
I've pretty much come to the conclusion that I either have a very advanced key logger virus/program on my PC that can't be detected (which isn't what I'm leaning toward)... or that this was a malicious attack against myself. I had characters deleted, I had all my characters stripped, I had some things still intact and some not... as well as I had my hunter bugged out in the middle of Dire Maul. All of which seems a little fishy to me to just be a logger. Some things they could have sold to get money still are sitting in bags and the fact that they placed my hunter somewhere where I can't harth or log out but still has on all my armor... seems a little strange too.

And I'm gonna do my best in seeing if I can get MD's guild funds restored. I'm not sure if I need to be the only one to contact a GM but perhaps someone else from MD should too? I'm not sure how to handle it. But I'm going to mention that to them when I call them tomorrow or if I manage to talk to someone tonight (which I donno if I will or not).

Spell things out in l33t randomly switching between l33t and normal english

Make it something that noone will ever guess, so something you can remember and that is completly random.

well nonetheless... I suggest using different passwords for multiple things.
Like perhaps when you make a password even make it completely random

Sounds good.. I just am playing the waiting game right now. I gotta wait till whoever has my case to e-mail me and tell me what is getting restored. If the g-bank stuff isn't on there I can always e-mail the person in charge of the case back. Though it would help to know what got taken from the guild bank.... was it just money or money and items??

Another way to make a password is to take a line from a song, alter it, and add a number.
For example.
"Getting Away With Murder"
Let's drop the vowels.
gttngwywthmrdr
Let's drop the repeated letters.
gtnwyhmrd
And how many total letters were dropped?
21 letters in song lyrics.
9 letters in jibberish.
gtnwythmrd12
Use a song and line you'd remember, but not one that people would easily assosciate directly with you, if they know you used the methood.

What's always worked for me is to not just use words when making a password, but words and numbers, and to make them all over 8 characters long. If you want your forum info to be the same as your game, you could have gotten away with using the same password on WoW, but with an added string of numbers and possibly another word added onto it.
Example:
Forum password - kittykat
Game password - kittykat1990tiger
There's also, if WoW allows it, the use of symbols such as $ % * ^ @ #. Essentially, the more you can use in a password, the better, since the chances of someone getting it right on a guess get infinitely smaller the more characters you have on it, even if it's similar to one you use somewhere else.
If you don't all ready, I'd recommend using Firefox for web browsing, since it tends to discriminate against active code a bit more than IE does.

Also, one of my neat tricks (though this doesn't protect against keyloggers or people in your household) is to set up a password, then "forget" it and ask for a reset. Most places give you a random series of letters and numbers, which I then commit to memory (or put on a post-it, or whatever, but not in a Word file on your harddrive!).
It's how I do my TNG stuff.

Actually, when I was hacked (probably a year ago) my TNG was the same as my WoW information. It has since been changed around and I've had no further problems.
Mortica
11-19-2007, 11:58 AM
Your TNG info should not be the same as your WoW info. Me and Icia are the ONLY ones with access to the database, and I can promise we have much better things to do with our time than try to decrypt md5's, but you shouldn't trust me. I'm just a face on the internet.
However, if you were hacked, I can guarantee it had nothing to do with information stored here. It was either a result of a keylogger that you downloaded (get a good antivirus for your computer and keep it updated), someone you gave the info to who has misused the info (there's a reason you aren't supposed to share your info with ANYONE), or it may even have been brute forced (least likely).
I'll repeat again, the WIKI was NOT hacked. Someone created a page of spam and crap, but that is the nature of the beast. No one would have ever seen the page except people looking at the "recent changes" link.

It could be a symptom of just using the same info in multiple places at all. Anything that's important I give a unique password that isn't even remotely similar to what I use elsewhere.

Well... we ran 4 different scanners... like I said.. nothing showed up. Also only one person had my information and he was out of town as well on 56k dial up at his momma's house... that isn't likely. (not to mention at the time of which it happened he was at school)... so I'm voting on brute force or either a keylogger so amazingly awesome that it's still hiding on my PC because 4 different scanners couldn't find it. lol...
I donno.. I know you didn't do it.. I even told my boyfriend that. I was like "there is no way Mortica did it.. she just doesn't strike me as that kinda person".. so wasn't trying to point fingers at you. <3
I honestly donno what it was... but if it is a keylogger I'm sure I'll find out sooner than later.
As far as passwords go.. I am using a random word/random number series of combinations that I throw together. I'll have to get used to it but it's gonna be the safest thing for me to do (as far as being able to remember it). =)
It could be a symptom of just using the same info in multiple places at all. Anything that's important I give a unique password that isn't even remotely similar to what I use elsewhere.
Which I had the same name and password for a few things.. which is likely how it got taken.
