View Full Version : Getting involved in storylines

Don't know about the rest of you, but I see so many tasty storylines developing here. Stuff I'd love to get involved in, but being pretty new to online roleplaying I'm never sure how to handle it. Where to jump in or what to do.
I don't want to intrude on someone's story they're making. Many of these storlylines are like dance, an artform that a partner can either make or break. I get worried that I'm going to step in and get my big feet all over things.
I understand that some have the view that if RP is open, then anyone should be welcome to do whatever the hell they feel makes good roleplay, but I differ from this. I believe in enhancing it allong the line that the author intends and being mindfull of other people's work.
Any guidelines that the rest of you follow?
Personally, if I don't specifically label a story (Closed RP), I welcome anyone's contributions, so long as it makes sense and follows the flow. That way the story can move in unexpected ways for me and I can also be surprised at the outcomes..

I agree with Lupa.
If I'm in-game RPing a situation that would be closed to the general public, I simply whisper the interloper and inform them that it's private RP - please assume there's a door hanging in that doorframe.
Nine times out of ten, it's all for the public's eyes. As far as the posts go... heck, unless it says (( Closed RP )) it's free-for-all!

I welcome contributions, too. In fact, at this point I think Vilmah's gonna need all the help she can get. =(

Same for me. And the potential instances where I wouldn't want to be interrupted you'd probably never find anyway :)

Agree with Lupa. Any storyline Clys and/or I are doing is welcomed to be joined by all.

I always leave any in-game story I might have going, which admittedly isn't that often, open to the public. I even made a point at one time of mentioning that my journal is kept on a shelf in "my office" across from the Apothecarium where anyone could read it.

I'd agree. Sometimes the only real problem is finding a story to jump in- when you're halfway through a plotarc, how often do you tell a random stranger the events that led up to the present? Sometimes personality changed stemming from an RP event are either too subtle to comment upon, or the normal is too unfamiliar to treat the current as odd.
While we're on the subject of RP, here's a question- how exactly does one set up an in-game event to translate into RP? I can see how duels would be fairly simple, because you can speak to the people involved. But what about fights or actions elsewhere?

Well I have no problem with someone getting involved so long as they are in fact RP'ing. Bear in mind much like Mortica... anything I really really dont want you to interupt.... you wont be able to. By the way Mortica wheres my black shirt :)?
((Absolutely, I want people to get involved. The best way is to shoot me a message, and discuss how you'd like to insert yourself. I will even open up an opportunity for you, if I know you're interested.
The only thing that wouldn't be acceptable would be for someone to jump in and try to take over, or change the story in a god-moding type of way (like writing that they kill me and take over my house, or something like that, withouth my prior agreement to it).
I love it when people get involved in the stories, because then they take on a new life of their own.

((
Generally, I have no problem inserting myself in RP going on in front of the bank in IF or in the streets in SW. Unless someone is putting on a show (like the IFR fireworks event) I feel that if it's public, then I'm involved. On the other hand, there are times where I'm not sure. Like one time there was a couple arguing in the inn in SW. I wasn't sure how I could insert myself in their argument or whether or not it would be appropriate ("ZOMG I'm a Paladin of Teh Light I solve problems!" /flex ?), so I let them be. Also, as someone above mentioned, I'm leary of leaping into someone's story arc at an odd time.

I too welcome participation in my stories, few though they are. Actually, I think they number just the one. I try.
((if anyone can make a diamond out of my zircons, I'm impressed! Please please feel free to contribute. Considering I don't do any closed rp, or have reasons to, then anything i post please add your comments. I think I left A Gloomberry Tale open at the end, left my flute and satchel in the Pig And Whistle .... **wink wink nudge nudge**))

((Well I've got a new character and new storyline just starting alliance side and my Flag RSP is up. Feel free to shoot me a tell, to start RPing with with me live or in the /join BR. I'm quite sure Clys on Horde side is going to get involved in my storyline as well...and if YOU have a storyline and need someone to get involved or even if you just need me to be an NPC witness to something that's going to happen to further your story, let me know and I'd be glad to help.))
