Aliens?! Spaceships?! Eredar are the good guys? The heck?!

What the hell is going on? Frontpage of WoW site. We knew the new race are Draeni, but did anyone check the lore?

Over the eons, Sargeras encountered two powerful demonic races, both of which were bent on gaining power and dominance over the physical universe.

The eredar, an insidious race of devilish sorcerers, used their warlock magics to invade and enslave a number of worlds. The indigenous races of those worlds were mutated by the eredar's malevolent powers and turned into demons themselves. Though Sargeras' nearly limitless powers were more than enough to defeat the vile eredar, he was greatly troubled by the creatures' corruption and all-consuming evil.

To the new stuff about the Draeni:


Nearly twenty-five thousand years ago, the eredar race arose on the world of Argus. They were extremely intelligent and had a natural affinity for magic in all its myriad forms. Using their gifts, they developed a vast and wondrous society.

Unfortunately the eredar's accomplishments caught the attention of Sargeras, the Destroyer of Worlds. He had already begun his Burning Crusade to eradicate all life from the cosmos, and he believed that the brilliant eredar would be pivotal in leading the vast demonic army he was gathering.

Ok, what the hell? We now just re-write the lore from a decade ago because... well, see the kiddies all want to be able to play demons, and the demons are all like really evil, so we need good demons...

Secondly: So uhm... Yeah, Aliens, space-ships. Leet kiddies all like spaceships and lasers right? This should up our sales!


And more recently, the Blood Elves stole technology from the Draenei and also sabotaged their dimensional ship, which crash landed on Azeroth.

What the HELL are they thinking? I'm not a stickler for the lore fo the game, but this makes me sick.

I dunno. Even if I could somehow rationalise the lore, I have a feeling that the kiddie problem is going to increase so drastically after the expansion that the game will become un-playable for decent folk.

Looks like my last month of subscription might well be the month before they release Burning Crusade.

I'm finding this a bit too much manure to swallow myself... it's a bit... far out there, honestly. I don't see how they could change something like that without a second thought? It isn't that hard to think of think of a viable lore for Draenei, is there?

I mean, ignoring the fact that we know have playable demon paladins from outer space...

The problem is that how can someone RP in a universe that they can no longer take seriously?

The new changes have affected the core of the lore, the very origin of the story with some ridiculous crap and people are trying to come to terms if they can actualy live with it, ignore it or simply abandon WoW as an RP platform.

Would you be able to RP an conflicted undead warrior torn between the light and the dark in the Sci-fi version of the smurf village?

If the story of the world no longer makes sense and you can no longer makes sense of your surroundings, it is difficult for many to stay in character.

Some came here with the view that WoW was an open canvas in which they could create their own RP world and story for their character to live in.

Others came here to create a story in the existing Warcraft Universe which they have known and loved for over a decade. Their character is as much a part of the world and the lore itself. Now that the lore has been changed at its very core some are finding their characters out of place and even unable to take the world seriously any longer.

Barring the mix-up with the Eredar being evil or good, why is it so hard to believe that the Draenei that inhabited Draenor weren't originally from there? It's fairly obvious that they at least tried to hide their advanced society while on that planet, in an attempt to not raise attention. Why is it so hard to believe that the Eredar maybe omg crashed their ship on Draenor and decided to just live there?

We can accept a giant hentai tentacle monster in Ahn'Qiraj, we can accept the fact that there's a dragon standing in Stormwind Keep, we can even accept the fact that somehow these leaders we kill in instances always seem to still be alive when we go back...but we can't accept that some race off in somewhere that pretty much every person on Azeroth has ignored up to this point didn't originally come from there.

What bugs people more than the Draenai or the "space ship" is actualy the replacement of very good lore with garbage half assed lore which was very poorly thought out.

To make it worse it forms a huge gap in the story of Sargeras and the Burning Legion which is preety much the source of just about everything that has happened since the first game and all related novels and books.

Man, whatever. I know this changes everything, but I think there's at least one person in their boss's office at Blizzard getting their asses chewed as we speak. Besides...if they didn't come out with SOMETHING at E3, can you imagine the uproar from the whiner gamers that inhabit the General WoW forums?

Blizzard has screwed up before, but they usually fix it (usually). This world would be a ton better if people left the torches and pitchforks in the closet a little longer.

Well I kinda like it. It just proves what I've always thought, the only ones who get all bent out of shape over lore issues in other people's RP are the ones who take it too seriously, as if it was from the mouth of God or something. It's fiction, subject to change, and to be used for our enjoyment.

Exactly what I've been thinking about, Clys. There's nothing any of the players can do about it, and complaining about it isn't going to change it. It's not like it's real, or even matters.

Well, as much as many of us love the lore, it is Blizzard's to do with as they please. I agree with you, Brak, that too many changes to the lore foundations make the world unbelievable and therefore make it difficult to RP in. Not being a huge lore buff, I find it difficult enough to create stories that 'fit in' with the rest of the world's larger events. On the other hand, I think I'll get used to it.

That and I want a spaceship.

I try never to get too much into the lore just to avoid stuff like this. If it didn't happen to my character, or my character hasn't read about/ been involved in it, then my character doesn't know, or doesn't care.

They could be giant slurpee machines for all I care....I will still enjoy this game and will still try to advance my characters.


I am so glad that I stay ignorant of all the lore....Ignorance is bliss.

I'm afraid I have to make one too if that's the case. I wasn't saying I'd CANCEL MY OCCONTOMG by any stretch of the imagination, and the Draenei are pretty cool, spaceship 'n all. I was just expressing my distataste for the Sargeras change.
