View Full Version : Thoughts on New blood elf Lore?

With the Draenei announcement has come an updated blood elf lore, available here: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/townhall/history-be.html
I'm much more intrigued by the blood elf lore, which I find a lot more believable (hah) than the Draenei. I'm especially interested in this Anveena character. I'm wondering if there will be two camps of thought for the Blood Elves: the followers of Anveena/Halduron/Lor'themar, who are closer in line with the slightly more noble attitudes of the High Elves, and the cult of Rommath, which obviously seems like the zealots and extremists bowing to Kael'thas/Illidan.
Just my own personal opinion/storywriting, it wouldn't seem odd to me that the Anveena camp could feel both worried about Illidan and the possible fall of Kael'thas, and also have more of a love for their homeland. They don't see Outland as the "Promised Land", and are wary of it. Rommath's followers, of course, are the standard Blood Elf zealots. Once Anveena and the rest actually send representatives to Outland, they find a corrupted and chaotic world, led by a mad and psychotic ruler, Illidan, and thus split with the Blood Elves of Outland permanently. This divide naturally causes bad blood between them and Rommath (pun not intended =( ), providing the political/ideological tension we've come to see in nearly every race.
If my story is in fact a semi-accurate representation, I'll be a lot more interested in the Blood Elves as allies. There's already an entire race of backstabbers in the Horde that seem to fill the role of the "evil" guys, I really don't want another race to be depicted by Blizzard as "black" rather than grey (note, in an earlier rant, my main beef is that many Forsaken quests seem to scream "look at me I'm so evil", and not in the Super-villain way. Poisoning a puppy... wtf. I love the quest with the cockroach vendor though, that's pretty heartwarming.).
But the fact remains. The BE girl holding tightly onto the BE guy's arm makes me wretch. Why did they have to introduce a fanservice faction to the Horde? =(
Anyway, discuss.

reading it..
yeah.. Caer Darrow Runestone in Scholomance.. I remember that campaign quite vividly.. bwuahahaha.. Gul'dan made the first Death Knights with it, and shattered it into pieces for the Altars, which mutated the Ogres to give them the arcane knowledge of the Queldorei.
this whole Aveena..thing is.. weird.. dunno what to think about it now. Best thing to do is just watch it play out and decide then.
As I have come to understand it, the Sin'Dorei will be joining the Forsaken, due to Sylvanas having complete memory of who she is, and since she is still higher rank then Lor'themar, the Elves would see her as a more competant leader.
Thus, they will not be in the Horde at all, but enjoy a second-class citizenry that the Forsaken have for 18 months, only they will incur the wrath of Old Orcs and almost every single troll who will regard them as the enemy.

World of Warcraft is, to reword the description of Freemasonry: a peculiar system of moneymaking veiled in lore and illustrated by a game.
Meaning... if they think the horde's lack of sex appeal might be denying them a few wads of $15 a month, then dammit, the horde's gonna get some sex appeal, and leave it to the writers to figure out how.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to apologize on behalf of those in the male sex who don't play games to fulfill their sexual fantasies.

I have recently discovered that the Story of Anveena is completely explained in the "Sunwell Trilogy" Manga series.
Fallacy

Yeah, Anveena's been around for a while with the Sunwell Trilogy. It just seemed weird that they describe her that way on that page, but was a human and unaware of what she is in the comics. Meh.

Hate to derail on the Blood Elves... but I believe you are looking at the Forsaken wrong.
First, let's kind of look at what the "typical" Forsaken has gone through.
- Betrayed by their most beloved Prince
- Lost their homeland
- Was eaten/flayed/plagued in horrible fashion, only to raise as undead
- Commit eating/flaying/assisting in the plaguing of all their former friends
- "Awakened" by the Dark Lady, a person who was also royally boned
- Having to fight what they formerly were (Scourge) - while also being lumped into the same "undead" fashion by their former allies (Alliance)
- Look at the Undercity. Not a pretty place.
While the goals of the Dark Lady ARE evil (Selfishness/Self Preservation at the sacrifice of others is pretty damn evil); they are a product of their environment. It's hard times... and hard times call for hard measures. While the stories of the orcs, tauren, and darkspear trolls is positive and on the up-and-up... the former citizens of Lordaeron have NOTHING positive in their future. If they aren't dead, they are dying. If they aren't dying... they are undead. Sucks to be theeeeeem.
Of course, this is the perspective of a player - not a character.
Reading the Blood Elf stuff now. I'll make another post concerning that.
...
Hater.

That's not what I'm saying at all Abric ;P.
What I dislike is that Blizzard seems to want to pigeonhole the Forsaken into the "evvvvilll" kiddy category, with some ridiculous poisoning quests, and not expand on their human elements. I think after dying and then going through all that, I'd be plenty more cynical than I already am.
The point is, however, that Blizzard doesn't want to show the complexities at all, at least imo, and rather cater to the crowd that simply wants to play as straight black evil, without any positive traits... which in my opinion, makes any villain all the more impressive. The Joker, for instance, depending on the version, is all the more badass for his idiosyncratic relationship with Batman, rather than simply the "look at me I'm evil LOL" mentality of perhaps Frieza from DBZ. I have no problem with "evil", especially well portrayed evil, but I don't want the types of self-righteous bastards that could accumalate on the Alliance to simply point at Forsaken and say, "You see! There's the proof, Horde are EVIL!", or for some kiddies to roll an undead rogue because they'll be the GANKMASTA'. Evil gankmasta', of course.
Almost all of my favorite characters are villains <cackles>.
To Abric: REFUTED!

Hrm. I don't think you are wrong - but I do believe that you may be misguided. Why? Opinions, baby.
KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid.
When you start getting complex and start weaving a tale of millions... you get spaceships crashing into Azeroth with demons who aren't really demons because they are Paladins who are naturally attuned to the Light... with lazers.
Could get deeper, but... like I said, I don't think you are a wrong. We may be talking about the same thing, just in different words.
Or you never played a Forsaken past level 30. Bwhahahaha!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blood Elves. I read the lore... eh. I think, so far, they are making point to split them down the center. Good Elves and Bad Elves. Good elves are PC's... bad elves are NPC's. Tada!!!!
Not like that's anything original, though. (Shadow Council. Scarlet Crusade. Defias Brotherhood. Syndicate.)

Ah, I *think* I get you. No, I haven't played a forsaken a lot, you're right... maybe you've seen quests that are more in tune with what I'd prefer. I'm basically saying the Forsaken seem to have two script writers, one who is able to show WHY they act this way now, such as http://www.thottbot.com/?qu=1164, and another who simply wants to make quests like http://www.thottbot.com/?qu=502 and go "bwahahahahahahaha... hah.". Now if you're saying that that quest isn't ludicrous in the way it's described, and rather some deep monument to how far these former humans have fallen, then yes, we're disagreeing.
Ok, this topic has been successfully derailed... by a tag team with the OP, no less! =(

Can't derail a thread you've made. That's the beauty of it! Mwahahahahahaha!
The first quest pretty much sums up a lot of attitudes of Forsaken. Revenge. They seek revenge for what has been done to them... because Forsaken aren't a bunch of emo cry babies listening to the Cure. They got a problem? ... they make adventurers fix it and offere them chump change! MWHAHAHAHA!
The second quest is involved with the Royal Apothecary Society. Now, those guys are straight up fucking evil. They are attempting to develop a plague. Got a lot of stuff behind that... but that *would* be a derail of thread.
I also try to avoid specifics... because you got all these damn lore hounds that are ready to pounce on *something* that isn't said right.
"*snort snort* Oh, oh geesh. Frodo didn't say that to Samwise on page 45. It was Samwise speaking to Pipin. Geeeeeeeesh, everyone knows that. *snort snort*"
...
