All's Quiet on the Inferno Front

It has been a week since I closed Inferno. This is hopefully long enough that people have had time to think about what happened.

I'm opening up this thread to see where people want to go now. If you have a reason FOR or AGAINST any of these options, please feel free to post. Observations and limited examples are fine, but please don't spam the thread.
I'm going to let this thread breathe for a day, and I'll add a poll to it tomorrow.

Reasons For Keeping it Closed: Honestly, it's been kinda nice to come to the forums and not have to wonder who is being an ass to who. I think I've gotten more RP written in the last week than the last couple of months put together.

Reasons For Opening it back up: Not talking about things doesn't necessarily make things better. For the most part, even when the topics of politics and religion have come up, you guys have been pretty civil. PVP posts, however, seem to turn everyone's brains off and make you act like those infected things from 28 Days Later.


Strongly moderated would mean actively enforcing my long standing rule of no OOC attacks.

Making it private would mean you would have to request access like you do for Horde/Alliance boards. To be accepted you pretty much have to sign an agreement that you recognize that the forum is unmoderated and that you hold TNG blameless if someone says your Mom wears combat boots.

No PVP is self explanatory, I think.

I say open it up, but restrict the posting. no pvp posts. And no personal attacks, of course. Or serious actions would be taken, like banning the user from TNG.

There are some things that people just need to rant about sometimes, and Inferno is a good place for it.

Keep it closed if they want to gloat or do call outs most of us troll the realm fourms anyways, Since it seems people took it way over the edge. I was worried i'd open my newspaper and find one of the guys from tng whent to someones house irl and killed someone over a post. Which seems to be happing alot lately.

Keep it closed. let the realm fourms be for that sort of thing. Since the inferno has been taken down i've noticed people are being a little civil to each other it seems. Although Guildchat and local along with worlddefence has taught me many new and wounderful words. which i would LOVE to share with you all but i've been told i need to watch my mouth :/

I wouldn't mind a board for political/religious/general discussions that I usually prefer to keep out of the game, but I can certainly live without it if it's easier just not to have it.

And I never use boards for call outs/rants anyway, which is probably why I don't visit the official forums except for rare Lupen-stalking ventures.

I would like to see a .. less moderated section. THAT IS STRICTLY FOR NON-GAME RELATED RANTS.
A place for religious, political, or the 101 things I would like to say about that **%%$#@ who lives up the road. In tiny graphic detail that I simply wouldnt feel comfy posting in an open forum.
Make it private. Requireing " I will follow the rules and I understand that things said here may not always be happy and cheerfull" affidaivit.

Private and unmoderated. People need a place to vent frustration and if it's not here out in the open it's just going to be behind backs to other people. People are going to bitch regardless, I just think it's a lot healthier to have a venue for all to see.

If it's the ad hominem attacks that you have a problem with would it be possible to just lock the people behind them out from the forum? Or is it a all or nothing deal where a few drama whores can ruin it for everyone?

I say you either have to keep it closed, or let it be completely open, the idea that it can be there without things getting to points you don't want to see just won't happen. We can all be nice and say yes Miss Mortica we can play nice. However, just like in teaching the second that teacher steps out of the room for half a second those kids go nuts.

Either way, keep it closed makes for my RP's. Making it open lets people vent, but you can't make it half way, it just won't happen and in the end it will just end up making you upset again. This is my warning so if you go that route and it happens again I can totally go I told you so.

I agree with Kovan and Sole. The problem with Inferno seems to all be PvP related, so ban that topic and let the rest of us vent. I like what your restrictions are for opening it back up, so there's no more I can say. ^^

TNG is better than the Inferno and it seems much more enjoyable here since it's departure.

I think a mix of things would be nice. As in, reopened but keep it a Private forum, as WELL as No PVP Callouts. I think that just invites Epeening, and TNG feels a lot less hostile without all that. On the other hand, ultimately silly rants and civil discussions on politics and religion are nice to have once in a while.

As people have said: Open, but private with NO PVP. That you have to sign up for it. Therefore moderated by someone who is willing to moderate it and look in it. Someone who will shut down those "CALLOUT" threads before they get terrible.

I miss the random rants I got to do in there about real life or annoying things in the game. And I miss reading some people's political/religious debates.

In general, a lot of people find it worthwhile to vent in a semi-public place. Putting such posts into the Inferno section lets those who do not find such things worthwhile skip the threads.

I liked Inferno for a place to rant. And I liked PVP Callouts for a place for friendly PVP posts, and there were several that were fun threads about PVP. But I don't think the forum moderators should have to babysit us.

I voted to keep it closed. The purpose of this whole site, as I understand it, is to draw the RP community together. Some posts in Inferno have been driving wedges between RPers, so Inferno doesn't really fit with the purpose of this site.

A lot of terrible things were said in the inferno...mostly by me :D

But a lot of really good discussion was happening too. The community needs a place it can go to scream at each other and get the frustrations out. It's not like not having the forum makes all those feelings go away and if you want to bring people into the community, why make them go somewhere else to vent their frustration?

It's an ugly part of any community that includes people who are as different as we are, but it's something that needs to be accepted, understood, and embraced.

If you can't handle it, don't post there. If you post there, you deserve whatever happens.

Besides, the last major thread in the inferno was about a post on the official forums, which was actually RESOLVED in TNG's inferno threads. Well, maybe not resolved, but it did lead to a lot of good discussion with very little actual flaming. The point is, TNG isn't the only place this community interacts, and it could tear itself apart on the official forums just as easily as the TNG forums. Since SOME good comes out of the inferno and nothing good EVER happens on the official forums, why don't we just keep the inferno? Unmoderate it all, slap a disclaimer on it and let people stay on your site. Maybe they'll even RP while they're here.

Again, it's like any other medium people have available...if you don't like what's being said, put it down/turn it off/don't go there. Frankly the inferno isn't FOR you normal people. It's for crazies like me and I was glad it was here and I miss it.

Yes, this is a bump. Thanks to the people who have responded so far. I'm still unsure which way, but will probably make a decision this weekend.
