The first step in switching these forums to a new host has been made.

As some of you know, the Twisting Nether Gazette has always had two URLs to get to it.

The official URL is http://wow-tng.org

In the past this has always forwarded to what most of you think of as TNG's website: http://tn.yzeens.com


The wow-tng.org domain is now on the new host, and, after doing some research and pondering and budget calculations, I've decided to upgrade the site to using vBulletin instead of phpBB for a couple of reasons.

First and foremost being to give you guys a lot more options in your posting formatting. There also shouldn't be anymore problems with restricted words like "union".

Second being security. This site is very secure. But to achieve that I essentially locked out a lot of options I know y'all would like, such as attaching pictures, using the word "union" and not being able to upgrade the forum version without it taking a ton of time on my part.

Last, I'm hoping that the change will speed up the site a little bit, or at least reduce the burden on the hosting server.


Soo...This weekend I'll be setting up the "new" site. You are welcome to drop by and visit. However! Do not start posting there with anything other than spam/test messages. Depending on how quickly I can setup the boards, the look and feel, and figure out a migration strategy, I will be freezing the current board early next week and moving all the users, posts, private messages, and journal over. At that time anything posted over there between now and then will get wiped.

This should only affect the boards for a couple of hours at the most. I will keep you updated on the progress in this post.

Once everything gets migrated over, you will be reaching TNG via the direct URL wow-tng.org. I'll of course put a forwarding URL from tn.yzeens.com to the new site for those who don't check back here as often.

Anyway.. Back to setting up the new site.

I have no plans on dropping the yzeens.com domain name, so anyone typing in tn.yzeens.com will immediately be forwarded to wow-tng.org seamlessly. Before if you typed in wow-tng.org it automatically forwarded you to tn.yzeens.com. Now it'll be the opposite :)

on an unrelated note, apparently phpbb LIES when it says you've ran out of private message space. I'm having fun reading some of the PMs I received ages ago I thought were lost to the 30-message limit monster.

When I was restoring the database to the Infection forums, I had to manually edit a few lines that were corrupt. No idea how, but I randomly scrolled to my PMs. It was rather amusing, reading my Private Messages from within the database file.

It might just be that I've never tried to use vBulletin the same way you are though. I know your current moderator setup looks pretty basic.. Let all moderators moderate anywhere? You can just put people in the Board Moderator group to accomplish that.

Here is a specific example of what I need to be able to do.

The Horde have a coallition of RP guilds called THEGA. Their forums are on this site under the Private Forums listing (you can probably see the Alliance-only forum as well as the not actually private Sanguinary and "The Show" forums).

THEGA has 3 groups (members, representatives, moderators) and two forums. One forum is viewable by all THEGA members. One forum is viewable by THEGA guild representatives. The moderator group can edit/delete/sticky/whatever those 2 forums but they can't moderate any other forums on this site.

Under vBulletin, unless I'm missing something, I will either have to personally add THEGA members to that group, or I will have to give the person in charge of THEGA moderation privileges over ALL of TNG.

I'm not saying I don't trust any of the leaders of any of the subgroups here, but I have gotten slack in the past with a "zOMG, why is SOANDSO showing up as a moderator!?!!!!". In the past I could say, eh, they can only moderate the private forums of group blahblahblah. Now I'll have to come up with a real explanation if I don't find a solution.

One of the reasons I decided to go with vBulletin is their method of cascading/inherited privileges *is* superior to phpBB's method. However, why the #$#$%$% they didn't do the EXACT same thing with moderator abilities is retarded.
