View Full Version : Pet Maintenance Night Success!!

So last night I took the time to perform some long put off maintenance on Elmo, my windserpent.

First, I flew to Winterspring and stabled Elmo, then proceeded to tame one of the Winterspring Screechers for Dive rank 3. A few mob kills was all it took to get that talent learned, plus Screech rank 4 and Claw rank 8.

Next, to Hellfire Peninsula where I tamed a Quillfang Ravager for Bite rank 8 and Gore rank 8 ( all I was after was the Bite, but its always good to learn whatever is available just in case I decide to change out my pets later )

I actually debated keeping this one as a novelty pet, even gave it a name... Crablice. But that would mean I would have to abandon my beloved sentimental Dragonhawk, Sparky. So, after playing around with Crablice a while I dusted off and deloused myself.

Finally, the Main Event! I went in solo to Zul Gurub and tried to tame a Son of Hakkar, the only source of Lightning Breath Rank 6 before the level 66 Windserpents in Netherstorm or Blade's Edge Mountains.

Now I tried this a few days ago with poor results. On Petopia, there are a couple of vids posted that demonstrate how to do this solo taming run. I tried both techniques and failed. Over the next few days I examined both again and decided that the second vid, the one of the orc hunter, was the more "doable" route.
( here are the two vids:)

I added my own twist to it by adopting a tactic demonstrated in the first vid; an invisibility pot.

Armed with my pots I called up Solenev to group with me and converted to raid so I could enter the instance. ( thanks for the help Solenev..)

A couple of dry runs ( resulting in 2 deaths..) and I felt I got the timing down. So, 3rd run was for all the marbles. I mounted and rode from the platform just to the left of the instance entrance off towards the watefall. Dodging the trolls in the little hut nearby I lept off the cliff and into the stream. Immediatly I took the pot and started swimming. I actually avoided detection by most of the Frenzys until just before the other bank at the foot of the Temple of Hakkar, when the pot ran out.

No matter, I made the bank with most of my health intact. Then a dash up the slope, aggroing all the crocolisks, brought me to the path leading to the Temple . I Feigned Death and all the crocs returned to the water's edge. I lay there a while in Feign regenerating my health, and watching the two troll sentinels at the foot of the stairs leading up to the temple.

After a while I was able to guage their movement pattern and when they were the farthest apart from each other and the stairs I took on Aspect of the Cheetah and dashed up the stairs.

To the left was my target, along with several others and a patrol of trolls. A bit of waiting and eventually a single Son of Hakkar separated from the cluster and flies by solo. Thats the sweet one. I put down a freeze trap and pulled him in with a Concussion shot. Started taming immediately.

And... Voila! One tamed Son of Hakkar and Lightning Breath rank 6!

I highly recommend to any hunter trying this, follow the example on Vid #2, but bring along an invisibility pot. It will make life a lot easier as you will only need a single Feign Death and not have to wait for a cooldown as that fellow in the Vid had to..

I have to admit it was pretty exciting to see a pet underneath his name.

But.... that would be too easy! Part of the fun in being a hunter is trying this stuff out. Why? Because we can! Only a rogue with their stealth runs can appreciate the unique sense of accomplishment something like this brings.

Ok, maybe that too melodramatic. Still, I liked the challenge and in the end I felt great. :D

Truth told, Melar Danashj actually were discussing forming a ZG run after they learned what I was up to..

I love ZG! In fact.. second only to my cursed nemesis, the Ancient Bone Bow ( which has never.. EVER dropped in any Scholo run I have done, on any character..) Mandokir's Sting was high on my list of must have loot.

Of course, now my green Mag'Har bow totally blows both of those away..

Its surreal how the expansion has made some of that formerly awesome hard to get loot obsolete.

To get the Mag'Har bow, all I needed to do was smear some greasy salve on several sweaty orcs..

It wasn't entirely disagreeable. Except for the crusty feet. Hate the crusty feet..

Grats!

I did a solo tame of a Son with my hunter on my older server back before the expansion came out. Yeah, took a death or two to get the route right, but I did it. :)

The final run the only thing I used was the Nifty Stopwatch (aside from the occasional Feign Death, of course), and it turned out I didn't even need the speed boost, as I didn't aggro anything when I ran across the bridge to the island.

It's definitely a fun thing to do, seeing just how good of a hunter you can be. ;)

Of course, I was also soloing Gnomeregan with this hunter in his low 40s. Took me a while to be able to solo the last boss, though, because of the bombs.

I love solo runs into instances -- it's like a commando mission. My favorite was farming a Toxic Revenger from Gnomeregan at level 29 as a rogue, though sneaking into Lower Blackrock Spire to get my wolf pup was fun too.

Heehee, yeah. I got my worg pup and spiderling pet solo in my upper 50s.

Finally managed to kill Fineous and Incendius in BRD solo at 68. They hit hard. Of course, I can also do a smelting run in BRD fairly easily now, considering you don't have to actually fight anything. Yay vanish!

I grew to hate the Acidic Walkers. And the stupid dagger never dropped until I returned at 60 to run a friend through. He was a mage.

Obviously none of you play warriors. Solo ability = roflmao.

65 warrior. But yeah, I don't try to solo anything except normal mobs, or an elite a couple levels lower...if I have all my cooldowns ready. And a healing pot.
