or something like that anyways. I thought you might enjoy the perspective of a fresh face. I am now level 14, enjoying it, though still getting caught off guard by the things I am learning. All you old jaded players, let me bring you back to your days of wide eyed newness.

-Just figure out yesterday that I can join or leave channels by the number. /leave 3 to get rid of trade for example.
-Auction house = genius. Where was this in other games I played. It makes player to player sales so much more effortless. I've gotten some decent armour using it, and sold a few trade supplies.
-Speed. Maybe it's the troll perspective, but I feel so SLOW. It's such a big world, and I keep running at this relaxed lanky jog that feels like it takes forever to get anywhere. Why or why does sprint take so long to refresh. Temptation to make a class with speed buff rising. (not really, I like the rogue apart from this point). Thank god for hearthstones, once I figured out what it was for.
-Rogue combo fighting is very cool. So much more to do that my old days as an eq rogue. Reminiscent of my camelot rogue in some ways, but more aggresively combat viable.
-I know trolls get a bonus here, but I am still impressed at how fast I heal when seated. I only occasionally munch on my level 1 jerky, and I have never felt the need for better food yet. I love the comparative lack of downtime.
-Another fact I learned yesterday....I can't buy bandages from shops. That's only after 14 levels of looking...I should have asked someone sooner.
-Ogrimmar is big....and confusing
-Still not convinced quests are 100% worth it xp wise (with all the running around time), but the sheer volume of them does make it interesting, gives me some direction. I've got something 10-12 on the go. One is for an instance...any chance it's still soloable?
-Wyverns - super cool!
-Zepplin - Haven't taken one yet....still not sure where it will take me, though I understand it's a round trip, so I may just take it the full circuit once and find out. Can I be attacked while on the zepplin (though it's probably no likely that an alliance player is taking one)
-raptor mount - I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT. *ahem*, ok, 26 more levels to go (and a lot of gold as well).
-general feel of being a troll. I love it, I don't regret it at all. The RP that comes easy as a troll (the speech patterns, the way it emotes things) is just so cool. We be jammin'
-The sheer number of mods that are out there is daunting. I want to make the most of my game, but it's easy to get overwhelmed by them. I can tell you one thing, I'm damn well going to want more than 1 action bar soon, and I have seen screenshots that show multiple bars on screen, so I will have to track that down.
-I've been ganked once, outside crossroads, so I'm initiated, go me! (some hunter, never saw him, I was one shotted while fighting a zhevra). It made the experience of passing through Rathcet a fun, tense one, since I didn't know whether I would meet anyone coming off the boat (go stealth)
-Still overwhelmed by all the talent options. Will probably go mostly assasination and stealth. My first 5 points went into reduced chance of detection, since I was tired of getting spotted (still used to everquest style stealth)
-I am envying the night elf wisp racial ability.

yeah ok, that's it for now. I played a fair bit on Saturday, so it was a lot to take in. Hope you enjoyed my musings.

Just wanna point out a few things (Still great that you think the way you do)

Trolls regen bonus is only in combat, meaning you'll regen health even while fighting...so its harder to kill you in those long drawn out battles

For the quests...doing one and running back and then running out again is inefficient, but sometimes you can do two or three quests at once and then get a lot of experience at once. Also aside from instances they're the best way to get good gear cheap :) Instance quests arent soloable, all of the ones until level 60 are meant for 5-man groups, just because its orange doesn't mean that its too high btw! thats why you have 5 people in the group, dont bother revisiting instances by the time you can solo them theres nothing left for you there at that point. This point is a bit of a ramble, but if you want advice on where to go for what loot or something you can ask (in game if you want), dont shy away from instances though! they're great fun and once you hit level 60 getting new equipment through instances becomes your new form of leveling since you actually cant 'level'

For zeppelins, actually be kind of careful....make sure you dont go to the one in grom'gol (jungle place) just talk to goblins to see which one they take you to, if you go to grom'gol thats a PvP zone so what alliance do sometimes is they get a 60 rogue onto the zep and when you get into the PvP zone they can attack you right away...and they do. If you head to undercity instead though thats safe for you. If you dont want to be ganked in your territory (main cities, durotar, barrens, mulgore, tirisfal glade and silverpine forest) just make sure you dont have a red marker by your minimap...if you do then type /pvp and it should disable that to stop ganking there, PvP cant be stopped in other areas though.

Dont know if you wanted anyone to say anything but BLAH I like to pontificate. Enjoy!

If you want help with a talent build there are lots of high level friendly rogues who would give a few pointers im sure.

You shouldn't be ganked while in the barrens, type /pvp to make sure it's disabled.
Also, you'll probably have to use thottbot to keep track of quests. When I did Stonetalon on this character, it was alot easier since I knew which to pick up and do at once (large area with lots of walking).

what do you mean by a pvp zone? Isn't it all a pvp zone? It's a pvp server after all.

Some areas have definitive control. For Horde, those are Durotar, the Barrens, Tirisfal Glades, and Silverpine Forest. In those places, your flag is turned off.

In all other areas of the world (or Alliance-controlled areas), the moment you step into that zone, you'll automatically flag. Those are contested areas and then anyone can kill anyone anytime. :)

Here's a bit of obscure advice folks forget to share with ya:

Don't duel priests on airships or near ledges or anywhere else that is elevated. The temptation to Mind Control you off of said elevation is just too great.

Sounds like you're having fun, which is what it's all about.

Coupla things:

Sitting does not increase your healing or mana regeneration rate. This ain't EQ.

Contested areas flag you for PvP, meaning you can be attacked. Horde areas don't, but there's a 5 minute timer, so when you re-enter Horde territory you're still flagged for 5 minutes. You also flag if you attack an opposing player, anywhere.

Stealth is level-based. A high level player will see you, regardless of your talents. There's a formula, but it doesn't much matter. Just realize that if someone is way higher than you, and you're in front of him, he's gonna see you. Stay behind, or far away as possible :)

Yes, you can be attacked on the Zeppelin if it flies into contested territory. But it's relatively rare, really. In all my time here I've only been killed on a Zep once.

Learning first aid and making bandages is a very important skill for a rogue. Do it.

You can stealth while eating, just hit the stealth after you start munching.

Everyone runs at the same speed, unless they have some kind of run buff (sprint, spirit of cheetah, etc). There is an enchant that can increase your run speed by 5%. Not much, but it can make a big difference later in the game. This also increases your speed while stealthed. It's possible, with talents and the enchant, to move at 95% of normal speed while stealthed (at level 60).

As for rogue talents, they are complex and individual. There's a good introduction posted on my guild forums, but it's not see-able by the public. Check the main forums here for some decent info:

Enjoy the game! Hope to see you around.

Man oh man, I can't wait for my rogue to get higher in levels. Nothing's worse than being chased down by a pink-pigtailed gnome in goggles. XD

Anyway, I hope you don't mind, but there's one thing I beg to differ on with ya, Clys.

Sitting does not increase your healing or mana regeneration rate. This ain't EQ.

Actually, sitting does increase health regen. So sayeth the Blizzard:

You regain health faster when sitting down.

However, this is only really helpful at low levels. After that, invest in some high-quality FA or some tasty meats from your local innkeeper. :)

I only know that info because whenever I make a new character (which is often >_>) , I end up selling the food/water they start you with for extra copper. :)

Oh goodie, I thought I was the only one who did that :D But anyway back on subject.

Yes the rogue talents can seem overwhelming at first, what I always do is go to the rogue forums and see what others say. Just keep in mind that talents can be unlearned for 1gp for the first respec, so play with your talents some, or a cheap way of doing this is to use the Talent calculator on WoW's main site.

Anywho I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Thanks Clys, good advice.

My PvP flag is on, simply because I think it's appropriate. If I meet a human, he ought to be able to attack me. Just how I feel about it. All I lose is a bit of time after all.

I have realized how easy making bandages is. I keep find the linen, so I may as well. I usually keep plenty, I've chucked my food. I am a bit confused on how I have first aid, herbalism, and skinning skills right now, I thought I could only have two.

Soraxis, what part of the city? I know many people who play WoW, but none on TN (they tend to stick to plain blue servers).

There's "primary" and "secondary" professions. The primaries are your skinning, leatherworking, alchemy, whatev. You're only allowed two of those. The secondary professions are First Aid, Cooking, and Fishing. You're allowed to have all three of those. I'm glad they changed that too, cause back when I started, you could only have two of those as well. :)

Fishing is quite relaxing, and it's free food, AND it beefs up your Cooking skill like mad. :D

A bit on your build....

First off I would suggest you decide on what you plan on doing with your character. A couple questions may help figure that out.

Do you plan on playing in the battlegrounds?
If so do you intend on staying in one particular bracket?
Which one?
Do you see yourself being highly involved in PVP and/or Ganking?
Do you enjoy a more relaxed style of fighting or more positional/movement orientated combat?
Do you like to assasinate low armor classes or have a higher survivability against higher armored ones?

Anyways... if you answer those questions, even on here... i can help with a build. Ive got a 60 troll rogue on another server and have used every variation of a build I can think of, and have the respec cost to boot.

I am not too familiar with the BGs, but I may try them, however I have no plan to stay in a specific bracket. I plan to evolve and grow, and probably just outgrow the BGs as I go. The BGs are not the main reason I'm here though.

I plan to not shy away from PvP, but I am not specifically a PvP seeker. I play a PvP server because it enhances the RP feel of the world. I'll hunt alliance, but as an extension of playing the character, no to score honour point, get prizes, or win contests, but purely because they are weak pathetic softskins that need to be gutted (hey, he's not a nice troll).

My talents, I plan to focus mostly in assasination, since they seem the more interesting compared to the combat tree, and stealth, because...well, that's what a rogue is all about in my mind. I do like moving around in a fight. I am quite familiar with mouse looking and strafe moving. Nothing so boring as just standing toe to toe and slogging it out, or I would have made a warrior.

Well the reasons I asked those questions will kind of make sense in a second.

First as far as your skills will go, being in a battleground and facing human controlled characters is far different from the battles you will encounter with NPCs. So deciding early on how you plan on playing your character and in what sorts of battles will greately determine your optimal spec.

In a small breakdown.. the builds go like this.
Combat is great for PVE and for soloing. It is non positional which means your main attack (sinister strike) can be done from any side of the mob. You also have a higher survivability rate from talents and can last longer with less down time. In actual PVP battles, you do very well against and heavy armor class opponent but depend more on stunlocking.

Sub/Assasination is great for PVP. It is very positional based since your main attack (backstab) is only available behind the target as well as only with a dagger equiped. Burst damage is key as your survivability is a bit lowered. PVP targeting is normally anyone aside from Paladins and Warriors. Catching someone off guard can mean usually a 3 shot kill and you can rush back into stealth.

So really if you plan on spending most of your time enjoying the game outside of battlegrounds and mostly doing quests and grinding, then combat will actually be very good. Get a nice sword for your mainhand and a fast weapon for your offhand (till you get your dual wield spec). The occasional PVP encounter and battleground will be endured with just a little frustration. Doing more PVP stuff and wanting to hunt/sneak and assasinate other players would benefit more from the sub/assn build and require lots of jumping and runing in circles to get behind your opponents. A nice slow dagger with high top end damage in your mainhand with a fast dagger in your offhand is a good weapon choice.
