Clys was angry. She had called the paladin, and Lovely had promised to come. But she hadn't shown up at the appointed time. Clys had looked foolish in front of those who had gathered at the Portal -- Karkarov, Smegmar, and Daala. This could not be tolerated.

Carefully, she applied the poison to her blades. It was a non-lethal poison, causing searing agony that stiffened the muscles of the victim, rendering them nearly immobile. Lovely would not forget again. Clys would see to that.

Clys focused her mind, seeing within her shadow vision the image of the brand she had placed on the back of Lovely's neck. Like a beacon, it shone in the darkness, locating the paladin wherever she was. Clys faded into the shadows and stalked along the road from Stonard to the Blasted Lands. Fitting that Lovely should be there, so close to the Dark Portal.

Clys came up behind Lovely unseen, and watched as she killed a hound. Stepping up silently, Clys struck with full force, driving her twin daggers into Lovely's back, piercing both kidneys. Lovely arched her back in pain as the poison filled her veins, crippling her, making it nearly impossible for her to move. Agonizingly she turned her head to see her attacker. Her eyes widened in recognition. Her arms, which had been automatically reaching for her great polearm, fell to her sides in submission. She would not fight back. She would take whatever Clys wished to give her.

Withdrawing her blades, Clys stepped around in front of Lovely. They stood face to face for a moment, Lovely's expression twisted with nearly unbearable suffering.

"You...will...obey!" Clys whispered, her voice sounding like death itself.

Clys shoved her daggers directly into Lovely's stomach, just beneath the ribs, and angled them up into her body, piercing both lungs. Lovely's body convulsed in pain, and she coughed up blood which ran in a small trickle from the corners of her mouth. Clys held her like that for several agonizing minutes, Lovely's toes barely touching the ground, her body suspended on the wicked blades. Every muscle in Lovely's body was in an agony of cramping. She could not breathe. She could not resist. She could only dangle there feeling the awful pain of Clys' anger.

At last Clys dropped her arms and let Lovely slide to the ground. She bent down and looked into Lovely's face.

"Next time I will not be so merciful," she said softly.

Pricking her own finger she allowed several drops of her own blood to fall onto Lovely's cheek. With her other finger she mixed her blood with some of Lovely's blood that still trickled out of her mouth. She turned Lovely's head to the side and dabbed the mixed blood onto the scar at the nape of Lovely's neck. The scar seemed to open like a small mouth and suck the blood in. The scar pulsed for a moment and then faded back to its original faint shade of red.

"There. Now you are doubly marked. You will not resist me again."

Clys crouched near Lovely, watching as her body shuddered and writhed in the grip of the poison. Slowly, the paladin's regenerative powers took hold and the wounds began to close. Bit by bit Lovely's body healed itself, relaxing onto the warm sand.

After a while, Lovely opened her eyes. She sat up, and then drew herself slowly up onto her knees before Clys. Clys stood and looked down at her.

"I'm sorry, Mistress Clys," Lovely said in a small voice, genuine tears in her eyes. "Please, please forgive me. Please, I beg you." Lovely looked up hopefully through her eyelashes at Clys.

Clys nodded slightly, offering her hand. Lovely grasped Clys' hand and pulled herself to her feet. Clys beckoned to her, pointing toward the Portal.

"Yes, Mistress Clys. I will come with you. Just show me what you need me to do."

They drew close to the Dark Portal together. Clys pointed at a demonic guard and his felhunter companion.

"Blood," she said in heavily accented Common.

"I will help you get some of it," Lovely replied, drawing her weapon and casting a shielding spell.

Together they attacked the demons, fighting side by side for the first time. They made an unlikely team, the undead Sindorei rogue and the shining Human paladin. The demons fought fiercely, but they fell before the two.

Clys grinned, her small fangs glinting in the light, and she leaned down to collect the demon blood. She dipped her finger into it and drew a word on Lovely's forehead. Lovely could not see what Clys wrote, but she stood quietly and allowed it. Clys stood back and regarded the paladin. Then she nodded again in satisfaction, and embraced Lovely. Clys waved in the universal signal for farewell, and faded away into the shadows again, leaving Lovely standing alone in the hot blasted sands. Lovely reached up with a finger to trace the word written on her forehead, but she didn't need to see the word to understand the message.

Remember.

"You will not resist me again."

Those werre the words Clys had spoken to her, just minutes earlier. Now, Lovely sat on a bench in Netherguard Keep, wiping the blood from her head and thinking about the events.

Unknown to Clys, Lovely had encountered Kurohane in Stormwind earlier that evening, and had begun a shouting match with the Ogema over the death of Yomi. During the altercation, Kurohane had made mention of Lovely serving different mistresses, and Lovely had assured her that she had no master or mistress. Lovely was confident when she had yelled that at Kurohane, yet less than two hours later Clys had proved her wrong.

Lovely had begged Clys to forgive her, and had knelt before her as a humble servant after being punished. Was the brand a part of this? Did it give power to Clys over Lovely?

It mattered not...Clys had proved Kurohane right.

Lovely put her head in her hands and wept....

Sojii sat at a shadowed table in the Rest in Peace, his elbows on his knees and his head hanging low. A glass of Raptor punch sat untouched beside him. The haggard young troll was waiting.

He raised his head as the door opened, and a slim Forsaken woman entered, nodding and smiling to the regulars, her friends. Sojii was neither, but he was here to see her. "Ey. Mistress."

Clys' eyeless face swung towards the troll. "Yes?"

"Jus' rememba ma advice. Take ca'e. Don' betray ma trust. Dis troll would much ratha not find hisself in opposition to 'is "allies" agin."

He stood, and smiled goofily. "Dass all. Take ca'e!" He waved, and walked out of the tavern.
