Just as a reminder (or as initial information for people whom are new enough to perhaps not know), there is an IRC channel for us Twisting Nether (Gazette) folks.
Into your IRC client (there're many), put "irc.sorcery.net"
When you connect, just "/join tng"

it's /join #tng >.>
I cannot help much for clients on the mac, but I believe Chatzilla has a way to get onto IRC for a Mac.
for PCs, the best bet is to use http://www.mirc.com/ Sure, it says to register, but you can use it for yeaaars ( I am ) without ever registering, just click continue each time it says "You should pay this guy for making mIRC" which will just run the program normally.
:o and irc.sorcery.net doesn't crash as much as WoW does! It just has netsplits, where half the room looks disconnected cause a server crashed but comes back 1 min or two later like normal.

I think the /join command might vary depending on client. I use trillian, and don't have to include the pound sign. ;)

I'm just curious...why does nobody (other than myself, Soraxis, and Longcat) use this?
On my other server, there's usually 20+ people in the IRC channel, even if many are just idling. It seems here, on an RP server, that people just don't want to communicate? That just seems surpring to me.

If I used IRC, which I don't, I'd only use it at home.
If I'm at home, I have no need for it as I will be in-game.
Simple as that. I'd use it at work if I could find a way around all the computer security.

I think people either think IRC is too scary or perfer the slow way of chatting by forums.
I find it too difficult to talk to the guild, or fight mobs, or talk to more than one person through whispers.
And I don't exactly have a second account so I have no way to chat with alliance in real time. I got me white kitten that way :D

I tried joining the /join tng channel in mIRC to try it out but it tells me that there is no such channel.
Thanks for any help

using mIRC the command is /join #tng
to answer the question why I don't hang out in there:
I used to keep IRC open 24x7 when I worked for Warcry. Even though I had it minimized most of the time, whenever it would do the "flash..someone's talking" I'd drop what I was doing and check it out. It was a major time sink that I just don't have the time for anymore.
I do check up on The Gazette frequently during the day usually...but it's when work is slow. I choose the time to interact, whereas with IRC I couldn't resist checking to see who was talking, even if I was in the middle of a line of code :P
I peeked in, nobody was there, I left. :)

Well its usually slow response times cuz everyone is in game, you wont ever have a convo going as fast as msn cuz you dont get the warnings when someone talks...just give us more of a chance to answer :)

Yeah, most of the time I'm chatting in another room or playing WoW. I can't exactly see if anyone's said anything in there because my IRC doesn't flash everytime someone says something in a room unless they say my name :D

Just the biggest advantage to using it is that you can use it to communicate across faction boundaries..to set up spur-of-the-moment events, auction house transaction, and the like.
Plus, I find it easier to communicate with people that way, then sending tells to a dozen different people in-game, or having conversations between people who aren't in one guild and trying to remember which /# was which conversation. :)

This will be the "official" cross faction communication device during the Shindigs, so take the time to set it up now. It takes a bit to get the hang of what to do and where to go, but once you do it once or twice it only takes a second to connect up.

Hmmm odd I went in today and the welcome message and all was deleted and gone. Did something happen to the channel I wonder?

You have to be registered with the server to "own" a room. I'm not sure how often sorcery removes old registrations, but it's probably like after a month of inactivity. It could be whoever originally setup the room lost their registration. (I know I've had to re-register everytime I've logged in, lol)
If people are interested in keeping this alive, I could go ahead and set it up again. As I said somewhere before, I'm not gonna sit around in an IRC channel unless there is a reason (scheduled meeting with alliance for whatever reason, shindig, etc).
edit: I went ahead and registered it. If someone needs op, let me know.

If this #tng were to move to irc.freenode.net I could just set my irssi config to autojoin and sit there, along with chanserv, so it wouldn't disappear. And as long as my server is running (read: 99.9998% of the time) irssi is running and on irc, even in wow.
Anyhow, just a suggestion.

If only Horde are there, there's no point
If we want to talk to each other, we'd use /tell
Aendra

I'm like.. the only Alliance that uses it. But isn't that worth it? :D

06-29-2006, 07:48 PM
not unless you give is /who locations for people we must hunt down and destroy
Aendra
06-29-2006, 08:12 PM
Would you really do that? That would be boss, I have some people I want killed.
EnheilRas
06-29-2006, 08:14 PM
Honestly, I was about to do it to your entire guild during the Rhowen incident.
I asked, I cried to let me do it.
Rhowen and ..whoever that other guy was, wouldn't let me.
Aendra
06-29-2006, 08:15 PM
Haha, why? That's dumb. If anybody deserved to be hunted down, it was Fen.
EnheilRas
06-29-2006, 08:26 PM
yeah.. Fen was the other guy.
He wouldn't let me.
I wanted to kill that chick he was having hot cybers with.

I've used mIRC before, but very little. Tell me, what's the benefit of using irc over lets say, xfire? You can create a group called "TNG" and have everyone add that to friends, then everyone would be in there....don't know just a thought. We used that method for clan alliances back in my counter strike/cod days. Plus you can see who is ingame and not.

I'm letting this thread drop off into oblivion. It's a great idea, but people just don't use IRC much anymore and/or we never had a large enough group of people doing it consistantly for it to be active for more than a couple days at a go.
If you want to jumper-cable it again, go for it, but it will no longer be "officially" endorsed :P
