It was dark and cold on the forgotten roads of deadwind pass. I hid in a cave, in a desperate attempt to avoid those that pursued me. Months ago I had come here in an attempt to find the answers to a question that haunted me.
Oh I found what I was looking for all right. The Death Knights of the old horde were still very much in existence. And a very powerful faction of them seemed to have made an unknown section of Karazhan their base of operations. What they plotted I could not discover, just that my old friend Syron had been murdered by one of those foul creatures when we were getting close to actually discovering something about the area.
I was only spared the same fate when another Deathknight, one of the Ebon Blade, managed to drive off the creature long enough for me to escape. After that it had been months of hiding. It felt like those dark days when the Scourge invaded my homeland. So many people had died, but I survived, clinging to the hope that better times were ahead.
Now that I was in a similar situation, I often had time to think. I thought of the differences between the scourge and this enemy that now stalked me. As vile as the scourge had been, it seemed that these..dark riders were somehow darker still, for reasons I could not understand.
I left the cavern with my thoughts, and walked silently along the lonely road. In the distance I swore I heard a melody, but It must have just been the wind. I figured I would seek out the Violet Eye in the area. If I had a powerful enemy, I needed an ally just as powerful, or so I figured.
Sometime later I arrived at Karazhan, just realizing that I had forgotten where the enemy likely made their headquarters. But I shoved that thought to the back of my head. Even if I had walked into the lion's den it was better than hiding like a rat.
I looked around, the Violet Eye that had once stood outside the haunted tower were now nowhere to be seen. What had happened to drive such a powerful group away?
It was then I noticed I was not alone. Three of the dark riders of karazhan stood on horseback behind me as I turned around, their red, fanged demonic horses glaring at me with malevolence.
One of these death knights spoke in a hollow, otherworldly voice, his presence and power seemingly far beyond the others who rode with him.
"You are too late elf." The Death knight said, his pale white face twisting into a smile.
"Who..who are you?" I said as fear overtook me.
"Three lifetimes I have known. Even death cannot take me. Death and life are but a wheel, ever turning. I am the first, the last, and what is to come." The rider said with authority and pride.
I repeated my question..
"Answer me..who are you?"
The death knight smiled before answering..
"Teron Gorefiend"
