View Full Version : Troll Writing

First and foremost I'd like to state this is a question out of curiosity, as it pertains to common troll Rp in the form of writing. I have observed that a vast majority of trolls who RP - lets just throw out the percentage 90%, as it seems accurate - have a typical troll accent when they speak. What I'm curious about, is why this accent always seems to carry over into writing, such as letters and journals.
Does any other race do this? Dwarves? Gnomes don't count, as their accent really isn't an accent at all. It's just over-large words.
It seems that written language would be exactly the same regardless of your spoken language. Spanish-speaking people write exactly the same as English-speaking people when writing English (provided they are familiar with all the rules of writing), and vice versa, despite their spoken accents. The same applies to virtually anyone of any language writing in another language. If they know the language well, they'll have an accent, but their writing will not.
I'm curious to know of your Rp reasons for this, and am open to any other suggestions as to why this is.

I couldn't tell you. Although Vuudu speaks with a typical Troll accent, she does not write with one. In fact, as with just about any sort of accent, Vuudu CAN speak without it when necessary. Most of the time when she is functioning as a diplomat, she concentrates to improve her pronounciation and the accent all but vanishes.
I think that the folks that write letters in the accent are just trying to capture the flavor of the character in the conversation. It is hard to type with the accent when the character is "speaking" and then remember not to when they are "writing".
To that end, I really think we should put some effort into expanding the Troll language with some words and phrases.

It's because I like the accent, so I use it whenever to distinguish myself. TROLL POWER!
With a slightly more explainative reasoning, though really the first reason is the main one, I figure in a way the Trolls have made their own brogue of Orcish. If you were to write Pidgin English or Old English, it would be very different from modern English. So, that lets me use the accent I love to tinker with when Leyu writes letters, and get across the notion that he's writing a very mangled orcish slang created by the Troll immigrant community.
Editted: Somewhat like l337 speak by today's internet kiddies. BOOYAH!

When you roll up a troll, the letter from your trainer has the accent in writing. It's considered somewhat canonical, I suppose. Maybe it's Orcish with a written dialect, too.
Niethan doesn't include the accent in writings because he doesn't need it in speech; he just prefers to use it to fit in.

There's no legitimate reason why the accents would carry over into any written correspondence. It's just absent-mindedness.

Normal english is dull, Mr. Boring.

Somewhat off-topic, Chingaso writes as he speaks, and it is not absent-mindedness, it is immeresion. And I promise to "finally" reveal the origins of his odd communications habits, hopefully next week. Just want to make sure it all lines up so that no lore sticklers pick at it...

Eh...usually when I make an unaccented letter as a dwarf...some tend to translate it as me going OOC, so I keep the accent up, and say Thurgo didn't excel at writing in the academy. Same with speaking in dwarven and still using the accent...Hes a Wildhammer, so I say that is my dialect...

Trolls can read?
You remember the Tablets of Mosh'Aru?
Or the big Palette of Shadra in Zul'Farrak?
Or the Shrine of Zanza?

I write letters in game in my accent simply because it feels weird not to. I understand why I shouldn't, but for me it feels more immersive and less character breaking to just continue on with the accent. Same thing for dropping the accent when I speak Dwarvish.
And I'm shocked no one has linked this before.. don't you all read Order of the Stick?!? NO!?! Shame Shame Shame... http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0305.html

You don't summon the fuckin' SOULFLAYER without a basic understanding of written word.

Ok so it's all good that I don't write my journals with the accent, unless it's quoted. But the accent isn't the only thing to concider here, what about words or slang that they might use. For example, i use Eloquence because i'm new to rp and like to pretend that i'm not. Eloquence replaces "good" with "Irie", so i guess my question is...The accent might not carry to the written word, but should racial slangs? Or is Eloquence just plain wrong with it's use of "irie".

Irie?
Uhh.. wha? As in "eerie"? I don't know what you mean here.

Irie, sounds like Aye-ree. I hear it most often from female troll NPCs, saying Irie mon.

Manus the mod you recommended a while back in these forums "Eloquence", uses this term quite frequently.
