Well, the racial abilities, yes, but that goes for all horde races.
ZING!!!!
But humans are still the hawtest race in the game, even if they do have crappy dances. hehe.
Ok, well the human males are a bit bulky, but the females are hotter than any female orc could ever be (sorry Vilmah, but its true).
So I'm gonna have to agree with Shadowspeak, except for human females. They rule all.

Who one-shotted Mannoroth?
Grom was all "Owned bitch!"
Name one person, any race, that could stand a chance against High Overlord Saurfang?
How many demons did Broxigar kill on his own?
Who solo'd Anduin Lothar while he had Ashkandi?
Orcs baby.
All Orcs.

I actually enjoy all of the races available to us as players.
However, Humans and Dwarves are boring as hell. They're exactly the same in every fantasy story ever. At least our elves are purple.

Drag your ass to Draenor and go see Fortress Auchindoun or Fortress Shadowmoon, or even the Hellfire Citadel! Those are architectural marvels of old.

Hah!
We got the best lookin' women, too.
Seriously. Grooda > Lovely on the hotness scale in my book.
Look at those human hips! Not a one of those women could safely produce more than 3-5 children. So, not only are humans (and elves for that matter) ugly, they are impractical and mostly useless.
Can I get an "Orc Power!" ???

The Wildhammer Clan of Northeron was actually based on an Elven Trait of them riding the great flying beasts that is sort of fantasy heritage, but Blizzard decided to give that position to dwarves just to change things up and make them more of a hard-riding mountainmen.
Pfft.. Dark Iron Dwarves.. how is that not tradition?

Orcs and humans in this game bore the shit out of me.
Orcs: Waaaah we're so cool cuz we can do. Thall is the best, he can do anything. Oh snap, we live in a fucking sandbox. Oh snap, we got kicked off our continent.
Humans: Oh shizzle, we lost our homeboy king. Lost, our king. Misplaced him. There is a war occuring...because of finance. Our spy owns a cheese house.
Seriously the only Orc/Human relations ive ever been interested in is Warhammer 40k. Because the Empire, Space Marines, and Guard have personality in comparison to the freaking losers in this place. Only reason i took Human is because 1: Paladin class i enjoy and 2: Alliance towns are at least 1000 times more fun to role play around. Everything on horde is a shack...or a shack with another shack ducttaped onto it.
I do like Warcraft Dwarves a bit more then other dwarves though...theres a lot of storyline, and a LOT of character placed into em. They got the random "we like drinking LOLZ" too...but Magni is a character i LOVE, and even the Dark Irons interest me more then...LOTR dwarves with their shitty hole in the wall + demon.

But if I recall, we didn't get kicked off "our" continent, we commodored the Kul Tiras Navy and sailed off it to go fight the Burning Legion and left you fuckers to burn under your own fires.
As for our "Sandbox," Which is actually a Savannah Mountain Range, it has more personality in its region than the entirety of Azeroth

Blackrock Spire was just a mountain before the Dark Iron Dwarves summoned Ragnaros inside it.

Manus you should know better. In WC1 and WC2, Blackrock Mountain is not a 4 minute flight away from Stormwind. The world of Azeroth has been scaled down to what 1/8th of the actual size of the world at least.
A perfect example is Hillsbrad, Southshore and Tarren Mill. In WC2 those are all seperate zones divded by smaller zones in between. In WoW they are all one zone.
I really don't enjoy any of the races in the game lore wise save for the Tauren. The Orcs are just as stereotypical as the Humans its sickening.
The Dwarven races and rolls are stolen from Dragonlance and modified. The Night Elves are very similar to the elves of Shananra.
The over all lore concepts are bored and rehashed. I like the small querks, but one must remember they are by no means complete. The Wildhammer tribe has centuries of lore that has not even been written yet, I would love to read that.

I couldn't disagree more on this. This is one of the few games where the orcs have developed any sense of character, and are more than mindless savage killing machines.
And I know I know, they were corrupted by the Burning Legion and were crazy the first couple of games. They have changed.
To say there isn't clear-cut definition between the WC orcs and other orcs is ignorance, plain and simple.

When I say stereotypical I don't mean that they are comparable to other orcs. They do have a richer story line than orcs in other fantasy settings. But the basic story of the orcs is no different than the story of Gondor from LOTR.
The orcs were a peace majestic race who were corrupted and brought down to infamy by one of their own. They went on a rampage and suffered because of this. One of their own learnt from the tragedy that their society had become so became the saviour. This concept exists in almost all fantasy storylines, be they orc or human. From LOTR to AD&D.
Now each story line has their own querks and changes, but the basic story line is the same. Be it Thrall and the Orcs in WoW or Allanon and the Druids in Shannara.

If you wanna start nitpicking at broad plotlines and story archs...
It's all been done. Hundreds of times.
What makes a story special is those "quirks and changes" you brought up, which the orcs of Warcraft are full of.

If it was Elder Scroll's size (Or hell, even Galaxies size per terms of wilderness), I would go as far to say that this could be a perfect game, but alas! There is no wilderness, and there are no true cities.
A perfect example is Hillsbrad, Southshore and Tarren Mill. In WC2 those are all seperate zones divded by smaller zones in between. In WoW they are all one zone.

According to Mezten, the Night Elves were based on Drow, but then just turned around to fit his needs and wants to make it "their version."
But go on ahead, you must know more than me on this, because hell if I ever read fantasy books.

Centuries eh? I can pretty much give you a summary.
Dwarves settled in snowy mountains
Dwarves tamed gryphons
Dwarves become isolated from home
Dwarves evolve.

That's an Archetype.

Personally, I LOVE sticking to used archetypes. Dwarves better ALWAYS be old, drunken grumblers (Not jailbait lolis like in Lineage >.>), Elves sure as HELL better be prissy and arrogant, Orcs have to be brutish and strong, trolls....well, WoW broke the mold with Trolls, and now it's kinda hard for me to imagine a classic D&D troll. Damn you Blizz! Same with minotaurs. Damn you Tauren!
Besides, we live in an age where everything you can think of, has been thought of. There's a severe lack of originality these days, so stick to the classics!

They weren't really dwarves in Elder Scrolls, they were elves, and were once part of the Velothi race, but formed House Dwemer and tried to use Lorkhan's Heart, which ended up blowing them up into non-existence. Kind of strange that the Sixth House was actually against them at first with the other five Houses, but, when Dagoth Ur went all crazy, they ended up just doing the exact same thing.

Fhenrir I agree the querks make it more interesting but they do not make the story arch any more unique. The Orcs of WoW are by best that have been represented by lore. But they follow a very linear story line which is why I said it was common to all fantasy genre's and stories. That is also why I said I enjoyed the Tauren lore more because it is something that has not been done.
You may call it nit-picking. All i see is annoyance at the fact that I questioned the uniqueness of the Orc lore.
EnheilRas
10-08-2006, 01:53 PM
Seeing as the true story of the Orcs keeps getting changed every 2 years, I'd say it was somewhat unique.
Who the hell knows what they'll say in 2009?
