Figure I'd bring it up for people who don't check MMO-Champion a lot. Blizzard contacted them and asked them to remove all the Cataclysm info from their website, and they complied.

Cataclysm content removed from the site
Blizzard asked us to remove all the content from the Cataclysm Alpha on the site. I don't have any reason or project to be an internet superhero because none of the underwear I have look nice over my pants and I'm in the process of removing all the content from the site.

Obviously, it also means that a few rules changed for you, my wonderful users:

* You cannot post anything from the Cataclysm Alpha on the forums. You can only discuss what was already posted on official sites/blue posts.
* Any screenshot from the Alpha will be removed and will earn you a 1 week ban. We will start enforcing this rule tomorrow to make sure you had time to read this post.
* I will track down anyone mentioning an emulated server/sandbox on my forums, find where he lives, and steal all his left shoes. You will also be banned permanently for that.
* No Blizzard-hate posts either, I support their decisions even when they aren't the nicest thing for me.
* Obviously, bans aren't retroactive and you won't get banned if you posted about something 3 days ago. It will just be deleted

Important - People who posted on the new Cataclysm forums should know about two things :

* Your posts aren't deleted, people who worked hard on compilations will just have their posts archived "somewhere" and we'll bring them back when the NDA is lifted.
* The new Cataclysm forums are also hidden for the moment. Stick to the old Cataclysm General Discussions forums and please be nice.

I apologize for the short notice, the content will be back as soon as the NDA is lifted.

I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier - I was saddened by the amount of stuff they were posting (and ignored 90% of their stuff just to have some surprise)

To be fair, Blizzard really fucked up in securing the alpha.

The client was on IP Torrents for Christs sake.

Oh, and uh yeah. Still surprised Blizzard didn't throw down the law earlier.

I don't know why they would throw down the law, I mean, it's good publicity.

They like to build anticipation.

Which is almost certainly why they waited so long to do it.

They wanted everyone and their mother to get excited about Cataclysm, however, they took it away so there would still be some mystery about it.

I'm still going to squeal like a little bitch when I see the opening cinematics after the game's downloaded to my system, regardless of what previews or info I had from the beta. Blizz makes random, insane changes after beta testing anyway, so...meh. *crosses arms* They're being doody heads.

Anticipation doesn't sell games. Publicity does.

I've got to agree with Vyn. I believe they held off on taking down the NDA breaking stuff. Hell, if I remember correctly, Boubille even said he was going to check before he put them up. This was a flip-flop.

Nota flip-flop per se. A controlled leak. A taste, then pulling back. Besides, while Boubouille was given the green light on select info, noone else was. It was mainly the posts by all the testers and sandbox emulators that made MMO take the hardline stance for their Blizz allies.

That's essentially what I was saying. Blizzard has said to Boubouille "go ahead" either with the intent to tell him to withdraw the information later on down the line, or they've seen the people on the forum doing stuff with sandbox emulators and torrents that made Blizzard change their stance.

It would be odd for them to give Boubouille the green light only to change their minds.

Stupid question time: what's a Sandbox emulator and torrent?

Stupid question time: what's a Sandbox emulator and torrent?

A sandbox emulator reads from map files and lets you move around without NPC's or the like. The screenshots on MMO champion originally would have been taken with something like it, I'm assuming.

A Torrent is a packaging method for P2P programs. Pirated games, programs, music and the like are usually packaged in a .torrent file.

So essentially people were illegally downloading the Cataclysm map files from Torrent sites to view in Sandbox Emulators.

With a bit of programming know-how and the right program, could you -put- NPCs in there? Because I think it would be fun to put Thrall, Varian, Jaina, and that one Kirin Tor guy all together in lovely black dresses and set them at a tea party.

That wouldn't be a bit, that would be a lot. Like, making World of Warcraft a lot.

There's a difference between flying around a digital representation of a 3D map and actually placing a bunch of different characters with physics in that world.

That's called making a game.

Honestly, I am surprised as well, but not.

Surprised it got leaked as quick as it did.
But not surprised because it is good for the hype.

And honestly, having this up for a week then suddenly taking it all down only makes people want it more. Now that we got a sneak peak at what Cat has to offer, honestly, who isn't MORE excited now than they were last Wednesday before the leak?

IT WAS ALL PLANNED, I TELLS YA.

Anticipation IS publicity, free publicity. A whole marketing department made of freelancers not being paid, called, the interested public.
