Okay, guys. I wanted to wait until i had her rigged, but the sad and awful truth is... Vis doesn't have bones. >< My fellow 3d modelers, please don't skewer me. This was the result of too much time and not enough skill.
And this that, I give you... 3d Vilmah.

I've been working on maps, but I'd like to have her first rigged. I know, moving backwards... but she was a pain to make, considering I've been modeling nothing but buildings for the past few months.
So what do ya'll think?

It looks good for now, although the eyes look a little weird, and she has no tusks!

I'll need to fix her teeth, they don't seem to be positioned right.

very well done...
I'd assume it was done in 3dsMax or some similar program?
If so check out cinema 4d the plugins for it make everything SO friggin easy...

Nice bum.
...
I mean... Heh, very nice. It's been ages since I've modeled, this gives me a reason to pick it up again.

It was done in Vis, which is the arcitectural version of 3d Max. That's why I can't rig it, yet. Technically I shouldn't be character modeling in Vis, but I'm a baaad girl.

lol indeed. I'd still check out cinema 4d if I were you and into serious 3d modeling...
My favorite thing is by far the shave and a haircut plugin... Literally lets you select polygons and "grow" hair out of them... does ALL of the animation for you... you just specify the parameters of the hair (thickness, length, style, etc.) and it automates the whole damn thing ^_^

Considering you did it in Vis instead of 3DS, it's very good.
And tha 'dawnk is HAWT! :twisted:

that's awesome!
i have been self teaching 3d studio for awhile now and i can't for the life of me model anything for shit. so i'm learning how to work with mental ray and hdri rendering. i just borrow models from games and stuff to render them. that's great though!
Vilmah

Thanks muchly, guys!
And Dewce, don't steal models!
/shakes a finger
3d Max isn't so hard to learn, it's all about practice. Which is something I need a LOT of.

i used a tutorial to get the settings... i'm not working on my own from scratch to get similar results.
i want to learn vray because it is the ultimate renderer for realism.

vilmah are you familiar with mental ray, vray, or brazil renderers?

Maya 7 and Mental Ray FTW
I never liked 3DS, though that's probobly because I've used Maya.
Actually, my first one was called "Animation Master," running on MacOS 9, on PowerMac G3s. Crashed at least 5 times in an hour and a half.
<3 Maya though.
Dewce

maya and 3ds are both owned by autodesk now...
i didn't like maya's user interface. 3ds is much more familiar to me.
mental ray is ok, but brazil and vray have some of the best realsim renders i've ever seen!

Actually, my company just bought V-Ray. I'm in an engineering firm, so everything we model must be photrealistic, which iswhy they bought us V. I haven't used it yet, though, since I'm the lowest rung on the ladder. I'm 3d artist #2 out of 2.

DOH!
i work for an engineering firm too. precast concrete structural, i'm the it consultant/manager dude.
(but really i just play wow til someone needs me... shhhhh!)
but since i gave up on the honor grind with dewce i picked 3d studio back up.

Is Lightwave even a viable option anymore? All I hear people talk about is 3DMax and Maya...did Lightwave get shoved off the map?
I tried to learn that program...tried...took two classes...my final was abysmal...I think my grade was a pity grade...
Vilmah

did Lightwave get shoved off the map?
In a word, yes.
Back in the day, Lightwave was the standard. However I think today, it's all about Max and Maya. Moreso Max, since it's applicaple to more things than Maya. Basically, if you're going into any part of the 3d Insustry, you're gonna want to know Max.

various free/shareware programs (http://www.3dlinks.com/links.cfm?categoryid=1&subcategoryid=2 has a good list) ---> $0
XSI foundation ---> ~ $400
Lightwave ---------> ~ $800
Maya complete --> ~ $2000
3DSMax ----------> ~ $3500
XSI Advanced ---> ~ $7000
Maya unlimited -> ~ $7000
You get what you pay for?
Kinda.
Each program has "unique" goodies. The big 4 (XSI, Max, Maya, Lightwave) are all being used in production environments.
The interfaces maybe different, some are more user friendly than others, some are more customizable, but in the end, you are manipulating either verts or curves to get what you want.
If you want to "play" or see if you'd enjoy doing this kind of thing, by all means grab one of the cheap/free programs to test it out.
I'm also leaving out programs like ZBrush because while it gives you 3d results it's more about thinking in 2d and applying to to a 3d environment.

/sigh
I'm sorry but Cinema 4d beats the living crap out of EVERYTHING. Both in ease of use and in realism.

Not the best example (could only find plugin tutorials that actually showed the interface), but it gives you an idea on how the interface works... and how easy everything is.

ah, sorry Marroc. Forgot about Cinema4d.
If I remember correctly it use to be mostly just a compositing, rendering program but they beefed it up a bit to compete with some of the other packages. I've never used it, so I can't comment on it.

i didn't really like the feel of the c4d interface, and max 9 is adding a ton of features that will make it much more userfriend and not so nerve racking. c4d is awesome no doubt, but it's all aboot the renderer you are using. you can achieve photorealism with 3ds. mental ray and caustics, vray, brazil, maxwell... all those renders will give you awesome results. 3ds physics and animation is where it is strongest though.

C4D R9 added a TON of stuff... the fact that you have dynamic partical creation and various other crazy crap like that makes it easier to use...
You can get the same results in any program... just a matter of how much work you put in ^_^
