View Full Version : [Guide] Responding to pings

So, I thought of this after I was at a guild meeting with the Outriders, there were defense pings and someone said "I sense a disturbance" after the battle I made the joke "Glad you sensed a disturbance in the force" and we made a bunch of star wars jokes. But it got me thinking, after that we just said we could hear war drums which was moderately better.
So, onto the guide, here are some possible responses to pings that won't make you sound dumb.
1st: *Communicators* (So, if your guild is one that uses a comm unit or whatever to talk, this is good) "A patrol is reporting horde activity by -Insert city/area name- and is requesting back up."
2nd: *Going about it like you don't actually know they are there* "We've received numerous reports of -Faction here- activities in -Area here-, maybe we should check things out."
3rd: *If you are someone who rp's like a crime boss, or someone with spies this is good* One of my contacts reports a large force of -Faction Here- heading towards -Area Here-, we should help stop them.
4th: *I don't know how good this one is, but it could work for like a druid, since they can pretty much talk to nature. * "*Thalcyone shifts into his bear form and roars to the animals of the woods, after a moment he shifts back and speaks* The animals say there was a great force of -Faction Here- heading towards -Area Here- perhaps we should see for ourselves?"
5th: *For shamans or maybe mages* "The winds are changing and the elements have spoken of an intruder."
This is a fairly general guide, please if you will add on anything you can think of, I just think its a good idea that we be able to explain most game mechanics IC'ly to help integrate ourselves

In Raven Cross we call pings "Alarm Bells" Which can sound a little silly if you're in icecrown and you "hear" alarm bells in orgrimmar xP

It could work, since I know a few of you are going to be goblins you could say they set up a network of machines that set off alarm bells to you guys.
Something good for a warrior shaman would probly be something about the winds changing and the elemnts speaking of an intruder.
A warrior would probly smell the taint of the <enemy players race>blood, probly better for trolls.
Ofcorse for a hunter the pet would sense the enemy player or the enemy player set off one the hunters traps.
The rogue would probly use bevros example of a crime boss and his scouts/minions reporting an enemy, same for warlock only his demon detects the trespasser. Theres lots more it all depends on your style of RP I guess..

The smelling of the blood would really only work if they were in the same zone, probably the same for traps too, but it could work.
Yeah, sadly I got nothing for a paladin or a priest. Holy classes are at a disadvantage for once.

We do? O_o
I usually just go with reports of attacks. You can already communicate long-distance. It stands to reason that reports of an attack could make it to you really quickly, too.

That's more or less how I handle it ICly, too. I treat World Defense like an IC police scanner - a really, really crappy police scanner.

"We're under attack! Oh god! Save us!"
*10 minute journey to Tarren Mill*
"Oh it's cool now man. They're like, gone or something."

When I see World Defense go off nearby, my first general IC assumption is; Alarm bells are sounding for [This area]. Cytiana proceeds to investigate, and upon investigation, There are horde in [This area]. I need help / have taken care of it.
So, alarm bells is my first priority on Cytiana. If they're nearby, I may use the 'it feels like somethings' out there' spiel, and investigate it. My comm device puts the message out, after I've figured out what's going on.

Since I've never liked the idea of comms in general in WoW (aside from sorta breaking feel for me personally, and it opens gaps like any high end "Go deliver this message" quests). But then again I see time and travel in a non-literal sense, so I go the "Reports of Horde / Survivors send word of orcs in Southshore" road in the rare event I'm Rping any world defense stuff.

I would agree, but if you've ever done the starter quests for the Draenei, one of the 1st ones is to build some machine that allows them to contact the exodar and has holographs and everything.
Sooo, its not too far fetched.

That's a good idea, actually. Maybe you could even have a non combat pet pop up to tell the druid about the attack, like a bunny saying "Yo broski! Theres some (Faction) attacking (location here). Thought you wanted to know, dude." or something like that.
(I also think all bunnies talk like frat boys. It's just funny to me.)

I love this idea, mechanical squrrel pops up and tells you about an attack on an enemy city, way to think outside the box.:D

Man, I would love an add-on that translated WorldDefense alerts into summoning a non-combat pet and having him emote the warning to me.

Hey Imi, is that what your bunny is for?
And.. oh jeeze, if I had something emoting that to me, I'm sorry, critter or not, it's getting shot. World defense is bad enough with,
Westspark Workshop is under attack!
Wintergrasp is under attack!
Wintergrasp is under attack!
Wintergrasp is under attack!
Blue Sky Logging Grounds is under attack!
^ Do not want, nor need, to know. D: And, in five seconds? GO AWAY.

My ZoneDefense mod is out of date... I need to get the new version.
It completely strips out the Wintergrasp and Grizzly Hills alerts (an option), and you can set spam control for the WorldDefense pings. I have it send me updates every 10 seconds, so I usually would get something like this every 10 seconds:
Grom'Gol Base is under attack! (5) <<-- 5 is number of pings in last 10 seconds

Secret Societies died with the internets, brah. We know 'bout your evening paddlings of pledges and "Fun Week".
To contribute to the topic at hand, for the brief time I used the Peacekeeper Blade (Bad tanking sword was baaaaaad), I reported pings by the sword bleeping/sirening and broadcasting a Ping Alert.
Also, Imirak's "rabbit alert" reminds me of Navi.

No no no no.
It should be a medium-sized collie of indeterminate gender who, in addition to providing world defense updates, will also keep you apprised of any well-related accidents involving Little Timmy.

What I meant by that was the constant rush to and fro to suppress the enemy, reminds me of playing whack-a-mole. Threat's done in Place A? Leave and go to Place B. While you're taking care of that, the terribad DK you just beat in place A has noticed you left, got back up, and started killing lowbies and NPCs again, and now Place C is pinging too.
Though, it's always so much fun.

For a lock it could go somthing like:
Quiet, [insert felhunters name here] can smell magic in use. this could work with anything but a warrior or rogue is attacking.
