His footsteps echoed through the large crystalline chamber. Keldorin's nostrils flared as he sensed the pure energy in the room. He flinched at every step; the air was perfectly still. The silence of the room tugged at Keldorin's heart. He was afraid, but he knew he could not carry on without coming here.

The being of pure Light turned its massive form to face Keldorin.

Here, in Shattrath, Keldorin faced one of the most powerful beings ever to exist: A'dal himself.

Shattrath city, home to the Aldor and Scryers, was a large but empty place. Due to the triumphs of the heroes that came to the Outlands there was little adventure left to be had. Only the most devout Light bearers and citizens remained in this city. Most of the Scryer and Aldor had even dispersed into the Horde and Alliance to join their assaults in Northrend.

At this time of night, even the devoted had gone to rest from their day of paying respects to the great beings of Light. Only the ever - present Naaru and the mysterious Khadgar remained in the grand chamber. Keldorin would have preferred to speak with the Naaru alone, but there was no turning back now.

"A passionate man with a jaded faith; today is the day he makes a point, but what is his question?" asked A'dal with concern. The voice was a musical whisper and yet it filled Keldorin's body with such a feeling of power.

Keldorin remained still and silent both in body and mind.

"You have come here for a reason Champion, I know that the time has come. Ask your question, Keldorin."

Keldorin glanced over to Khadgar who had turned his back to the conversation. He wondered why he was even looking at the old man. Guidance, maybe, though he would receive none.

"You chose me, great Naaru. Why?" Keldorin asked, looking back up to A'dal.

The ever present music - like sound that radiated from A'dal shifted in response. "You are a vessel, Keldorin, like all champions of the Light. We knew a day would come where aid would be granted to you Keldorin."

"Yes. Why?" Keldorin asked again.

"You are worthy Keldorin Emberlight. You have the potential to lead. Now it is time that the real question is asked. Then I will present you with the answer, Keldorin."

Keldorin sighed, there was such indiscernible emotion in these beings and he hated their whimsical responses.

"I have never trusted your kind, Naaru, yet you grant me to wield such immense power to destroy the Scourge. I have brought this Light to the gates of Icecrown; I have cleansed the bodies of The Lich King's greatest champions and most corrupt abominations; I carry it with me towards peace--a peace between the Factions that either side has only ever briefly been able to grasp and the power of what their unity could bring."

"You follow a dangerous--but just--path. I know there is more, Keldorin, continue." A'dal noted, his tune shifting to a lower hum.

"If I follow a just path, then answer me this: what of your other champions? Your most devout?"

"What of them, Keldorin?"

"Why, great Naaru, do you allow your champions to fight one another? To kill one another?"

The low, droning hum pitched suddenly higher.

"You instill both Horde and Alliance with your power only to watch them destroy each other in petty quarrels over some misconstrued idea of honor? Why?

The tone shifted higher.

"Why have I been subjected to striking down a champion of the Light with the same power he wields!? Tell me damn you! Answer me!" Keldorin screamed up at the Naaru, its song raging in his ears.

A'dal remained silent.

"I have never trusted you, and now when I wish to test what little faith I might have, you cannot answer me!" He stepped forward blade instinctively drawn.

"Then the time has come Keldorin. There is only one answer." A'dal said in an almost sad haunting tone.

The constant tune that rang in Keldorin's ears--his own way of hearing the Light--began to crescendo louder and louder, growing too intense for his mind to take. The pitch screamed through his skull and he dropped to his knees, his pain nearly blinding. The fire of the Light seared him in its terrible glory, and he bellowed old curses at A’dal who watched without a flicker of expression as he collapsed.

And then there was silence. *No, more like absence. *The Light was gone.

A Paladin no longer, he feebly pushed himself back to his feet. In frustrated resignation Keldorin turned to limp away.

Khadgar moved to stop him. "It does not have to be this way Blood Elf," he said to Keldorin's back.

Keldorin, enraged, refused to cease his trudge as he responded. His only words echoed through the empty chamber along with the sounds of his armored boots hitting the stone floor.

"I will find another way."

(( Now there's a question I haven't seen posed before. Why can Paladins who fight with/for the Light kill each other? Now that you mention it, it doesn't seem right at all.

Keldorin being on the receiving end of the Light's judgment before he looses it's blessing is really interesting. It suggests that even though the Naaru are beings of Light, they aren't only sunshine and rainbows.

I can't wait to see how the aftermath of this event unfolds.))

((A lovely thing called religious conflict. The reason why the Scarlet Crusade will openly attack their own, or why the Blood Knights are openly hated by Alliance Paladins. One Light, many different paths to it, and no one really has the correct answer. A war of ideologies is never a pretty one.

It's also interesting how A'dal is portrayed as kind of the "passive all-powerful" being, as if everything is going as intended. But enough blather.))
