"Now, approach the horse from the left side. Take the reins in your left hand and when your comfortable place your left foot in the stirrup."

Nouri did exactly as Randall directed. The mare, sensing his unease shifted slightly as Nouri's foot came to rest in the stirrup. It was a precarious position and Nouri looked anxiously over at his trainer Randall.

"Good, now simultaneously pull yourself up and swing your right leg over to the other side of the horse. Make sure you settle yourself in the saddle and distribute your weight. Be sure to get your right foot well into the right stirrup swiftly or you will be off balance."

Nouri nodded and attempted the manoever, hoping that this time he would actually make it without sliding off the other side. To his satisfaction he easily settled himself into the saddle and set his foot into the stirrups. The mare grunted under his weight but otherwise remained still.

The decision to take riding lessons came logically enough. Nouri was often far afield these days and travel between the lands he visited was becoming more and more time consuming and difficult. After a few inquiries he learned of Randall Hunter and his riding academy in the Eastvale Logging Camp.

This was an introductory lesson and was free. The real instruction would follow shortly, after Nouri became a little more proficient and supplied the proper fees of course. On successful completion he would be accepted by the various horse breeders in the realm as a potential customer. Horse breeders were notoriously prideful of their stock and didn't sell them to just anyone. They needed assurance the customer knew what they were doing with a mount.

For Nouri, this was a strange sensation. Although apprehensive at first, the process of getting aquainted with the horses and the riding gear came as second nature. Vague memories of his childhood came in flashes to him as he worked through the various lessons. That he had previous experience with horses as a farm boy was obvious. If only he could remember more.

To teach beginners Randall used an old grey mare. She was a former cavalry horse, long since retired from service and known for being a docile creature, perfect for beginner riders to practice on.

Randall was oftern heard saying " Yup, that old grey mare, she ain't what she used to be.."

Nouri took up the reins in both hands and tentatively flicked them while simultaneously nudging the horse's ribs with the heels of his boots. In response the mare lurched forward in a quick cantor.

"Woah! Careful there lad! Don't get cocky now.. Pull back on them reins a bit and slow her to a walk. Lets do this by the book.."

Nouri sighed and did as he was told. No sense in angering the man. He needed his approval if he wanted to buy a horse of his own after all.

The rest of the afternoon was spent riding around the logging camp, changing speeds, direction and learning about grooming, care of the gear and proper feeding.

Later that night Nouri retreated to the room in Stormwind he borrowed sometimes from Lovely, the Paladin when she was not in residence. He then proceeded to fill the large brass tub with hot water and soaked his sore and swollen buttocks. This was going to be more painful than he had anticipated..

The next morning, it was a stiff and sore Nouri who learned from the gossip running rampant through the city of the arrest of Kurohane, his former Commander in Chief..

They spent the better part of the day riding around the lumbercamp and nearby woodlands, Nouri and Randall. Sometimes at a leisurely walk, more often at an easy, ground covering trot. Every now and then they would spur the horses on to break neck speed, in part to exercise the mounts, but also to give Nouri a feel for controlling the beasts in dire situations.

These were horses bred to war and adventuring.

It was a day ago that Nouri returned to the lumber camp, mindful of staying low profile due the outstanding warrant for his arrest. The fee paid, he began his training in earnest. As Randall Hunter led Nouri through the paces, memories began to flood back to his mind, images of a younger him, a teenager really, riding one of the family workhorses around the yard, pretending to be Uther Lightbringer while his brother ( the name 'Galen' came unbidden to Nouri's mind), played a Burning Blade swordmaster.

Now, by the second day Nouri's riding lessons were complete. Randall had issued Nouri his papers of certification, with which he could now buy a horse from any of the prime Alliance breeders in the realm.

Nouri already knew the horse he wanted. He had seen a beautiful chestnut stallion in the stables of Southshore. As soon as they returned to the lumbercamp stables, Nouri took his leave and began the long journey north.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
" Well you certainly chose a perfect companion there. he's swift and strong. That stallion will not tire easily," said the woman who called herself Merideth. Her stables in Southshore were well kept and the horse she bred came well recommended.
Nouri was just about to finalize the deal for the large chestnut stallion when a tug at his robe caused him to turn around. There looking at him with large, soft brown eyes and a slight toss of the head was a medium sized mare. She had an almost quizzical face, not at all regal looking like the stallion Nouri had been interested in. Her coloring was dappled tan and grown, a 'pinto' as Merideth called her.
Nouri chucked, gently patted the mare's head and returned to the deal at hand. Scarce did he begin to speak when another tug brought him around. "What is it?" he asled of the horse. A slight neigh and toss of the head was his answer.
"Merideth, what is this horse's story?" asked Nouri.
" Oh her? We call her Marta. She was found a few weeks back wandering the hills bordering Hillsbrad and Arathi. I have been boarding her until the owner shows up, but I fear that is not going to happen."
Nouri examined the mare closer. She was about 3 or 4 years old. Well, muscled and lean, she didn't look any worse for wear. There were recent scars along her hindquarters, evidence of encounters with wild Hillsbrad predators. Nothing crippling though. Indeed, to Nouri that spoke volumes of her survival instincts.
"So, what is to become of her?" asked Nouri.
" Well, she's probably going to be sent down south to work on farms. If nobody will take her, the royal kennels always will. " One look at Merideth's face told Nouri what she thought of that practice.
Nouri cast his gaze between the chestnut stallion, looking tall, stately and poised, and the mare, looking almost like it was about to chuckle..
A little while later, Nouri was riding out of Southshore on his new horse.
Turning its head towards the Arathi border Nouri spurred it on to speed.
" Lets see what you can do Marta.. " he said into the wind to his new mare.
A less than picture perfect refugee from the wilderness, just as Nouri had been. They were made for each other.
((I like how you told the story, at least in my mind, of fiction based on facts...i presume, a journal type thing. It was well written, and a good read))
(( Thank you Rajjah. Looking back on my body of works, either as Lupa or as Nouri, one thing I can admit to is that I always tried to include the mundane and make it interesting. Also, I make it a point of adding life to NPC's who otherwise serve only as mute backdrop to so many of our quests/adventures. Hopefully it comes across as intended and not lame..))
((You do a good job of that, sir. Your most interesting story about the mundane activity of purchasing a horse has inspired me! I shall endeavor to write up an epic tale about the consumption of toast! What? -Too- mundane? Hm.. well, I'll think of something! In any case, good work! And three or four day late congrats on the mount!))
(( No no! Do the toast! Really! I would just love to see what your demented mind can come up with for THAT! :twisted: ))
