Good god, my computer has been downloading 3.1 for over 24 hours. I know my connection sucks, but I didn't think it sucked THAT bad o_O Anyone else having this problem?

Thats only one part of 3.1, not even the whole thing.

It's the background downloader, it's designed to take a looooooong time to put those parts onto your machine.

I am thinking it is the majority of it - textures, sound files, the new raids, etc. - the stuff we really care about (talent changes, etc.) take very little coding. And all the stuff they will be changing in the future will require very little in the way of downloading (if they need to change raid damage of an encounter, for example, its nothing new to download, just minor coding changes).

This is indeed correct.

Firstly, it doesn't download while you are playing unless you have the option selected. Secondly, it throttles the download speed unless you have that option selected as well!

Want it to go faster at the expense of your intarweb speed? Go into the WoW Launcher and select Options and change it.

Well considering half the content in the PTR isn't finished -testing wise (The remaining ulduar bosses, the Argent Crusade arena pve thing, the Silver Covenant/vrs Sunreavers quest lines and dailies in Crystalsong), I'm thinking its just the basic files that are already SET IN STONE, stuff that isn't going to change, or are easily changed in a 'mini update patch' on the tuesday the content patch goes live :P

Also the background downloader is notorious for killing your download if you use a network especially a wireless one. So if you are on a network make sure to set up port forwarding so the downloader can get through to your pc (yes do it even if you dont have a firewall).

As far as Textures go it appears there are very few actual NEW ones besides character models and armor sets. You're correct that the actual code is very minimalistic in file size, but the question is how Blizzard appends their old code with the new stuff, and how much has to be changed exactly.

Given the relative size of 3.1, I'm actually inclined to say that code actually figures in with a larger file size than textures, just because you have to think of all that new raid content and some of the craaazy stuff their doing, but how Ulduar simply recycles much of the texture files already in game. There's a reason for that and it's not laziness.
