A pounding headache welcomed Vonsci as he opened his eyes. He looked around briefly, and figured himself to be just off the road in Silverpine Forest.
He rolled his head in the grass briefly to try and shoo his headache away, and went to get up off the ground. But as he went to pull himself up… he realized his arms weren’t responding. He quickly glanced down to take a look at what might be holding them up. A look of pure horror spread across his face as he realized his body was missing entirely!
He thrashed around wildly, or would if he had the body to. His brain sent impulses to every missing part of his body to try and get a response, but all he got was an ache in his neck. “HAAAAAAAAAALP!” he called out as he realized he was miraculously still able to speak.
Vonsci was in luck, as a passing priest happened to hear his loud, echoing yell. She delivered a spur to her mount’s side, telling it to stop as she hopped down from it’s back onto the broken pathway, glancing around.
“Err… hello?” She briefly spoke aloud, not expecting a response. It seemed her faction was calling on her for help constantly, and rarely would she hear anything more than “Heal m- GURK!”. She tried to heal her comrades, but… she was the first to admit she wasn’t that good at it.
“Down here! Near the bushes!” Vonsci called out, and the priestess gasped as she looked to the side of the path and spotted the severed head speaking to her.
“Are you alright?” She scratched her head as she looked down to Vonsci.
“Do I look alright, Miss? I don’t even know where my body got off to… anything you can do for that?”
“Erm, well, see… I’m not very good at healing. Even people who are still, uh… connected to their bodies.”
“It’s not as if things could be any worse for me. Mind looking around for it a little, if you can? I think I’ve got a few gold in the pockets, if you can find it you can help yourself…”
“Oh, of course I’ll try! I just can’t guarantee I’ll do much… here, I’ll go looking. Don’t go anywhere! Or, uhm… right. I’ll be back!” She smiled down at Vonsci’s head briefly before grabbing a few supplies from the pack on her mount and setting off to search the gloomy forest.
As Vonsci watched her leave, he realized something was amiss. Well, something other than the fact that he was a talking skull.
His thoughts were… different. Not in a bad way, but in a way that confused him… his whole life (or what he remembered) his thought process had never been more deep than “stab the elves”, but since he’d woken up his memories had been more clear, and his thoughts more complex. He even felt as though his heart may have been aching, if it were present, for his past actions.
He’d mercilessly slain many people, simply because he suspected they were elves, allied with elves, or of course… they were elves. He’d hated them for so long, he hadn’t even remembered why…
He felt a foreign feeling (remorse, maybe?) for the lives he’d taken, but a hidden memory was starting to surface… one that had something to do with his profound hatred and mistrust of elves.
And just as he began to dig through his memories to find out more, a shout that came from the distance interrupted him rather suddenly.
“Is this it?!” The priestess shouted out rather exhaustedly as she came into Vonsci’s view again, hunched and dragging a headless body by the ankles.
“Bring it a little closer… I can’t see it from here.” Vonsci squinted slightly, looking up from the bushes.
“Oh my, I’m so sorry! I should have brought you out of there much sooner!” The priestess quickly hopped down from the pathway and picked up Vonsci’s head, bringing it back up to the pathway with her.
“There. Is this your’s?” She couldn’t help but giggle lightly as she held him by both sides of his head and tilted his face down towards the headless body.
“Hrmm… yep, yep, that’s mine alright.” Vonsci nodded up to her… or tried to. A look of frustration crossed his face as his neck ached and his body did absolutely nothing.
“Excellent! Now I’ll just… erm… I’m not quite sure how to do this…”
“Well, you could always bring me to the Undercity then. I’m sure they could figure something out… seen the abominations recently?” He chuckled gently.
“Undercity?! I can’t go in there, by the li-- er… I’m sorry. I’m afraid I, uhm… I don’t know my way there! That’s it! Yeah…”
“Well, damned… are you sure you can’t do anything yourself? I mean, what’s the worst that could happen at this point?” She slowly turned his head to face her as he spoke, and he shot her a sly grin.
“I… guess I can try…”
