View Full Version : Cairne Bloodhoof's... thing

Bloodhoof (http://www.wowwiki.com/Cairne_Bloodhoof) carries a large wooden... thing... and sometimes uses it as a weapon.
What is it? Anyone know?
Cairne in WC3 clearly uses an axe:
http://warcraft.bonusweb.cz/img/gameinfo/roch/horda/hrdinoveh/Cairne_Bloodhoof.gif
But where's the axe now?
http://www.spooncraft.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/500px-cairne_bloodhoof.jpg
I was looking at my WoW calendar and saw this:

Might be a young Cairne? Might be another Tauren. But what are the wood things? Decoration? Totems? Weapons? And if the latter, how come we haven't seen any in WoW?

Isn't Cairne, like, super ultra ancient?

They're wooden totems, normal Tauren used them in WC3:
http://www.battle.net/war3/images/orc/units/animations/tauren.gif
They're effing cool because you smash things with them.
Why don't we have any as actual weapons for Tauren? I don't know, but we should definitely write blizzard angry e-mails about it cause totem weapons are AWESOME and should be in the game.

Not super ultra, but he's pretty damn old.

Imagine this: Tauren Warriors duel-weilding logs.
Awesome? Yes.

Hmm, don't the tauren warriors in Mount Hyjal use those too?

Yeah. It's always burned my ass that player taurens can't use them.

Hells yeah. Seconded.
Just seemed an odd exclusion, given how prominent they are in the artwork and WC3.

The term is 'caber'. Look up caber-tossing.

What in the world would they be classified as though? XD
Maces?

Staves, I suppose. Or one-handed maces.

That bad boy is a two-handed mace. Or maybe, maybe a polearm (since the definition of that is loose to Blizz, given that the Nagrand Blademaster's reward is considered one).

Blizz probably didn't include totem-weapons since it would basically be a racial ability - and if the totems were awesome, then everyone would whine, and if the totems weren't awesome, the Tauren would whine. A huge balance headache.
Although maybe if they changed War Stomp to show you whipping out a totem and smashing it into the ground... :o
Also, the Tauren in Hyjal actually look kind of silly wailing on zombies with their totems. I mean, what's the point of a weapon you can't see around? "Did I hit him?!" "Nope." "Damn! How about now?!" "Yup. I'll get a mop."

Even better, in the WoW RPG books, they describe enhancements Tauren engineers place in their totems, like protective wing shields that deploy out, or giant pistons that cause tremors when slammed into the ground

Interesting Question. Spawned a few other interesting questions. A lot of misinformed opinions.
Cairne is about 116 years old. He's been waiting to retire for quite a while.
The weapon he uses is a totem, although he used a halberd before. Totem weapons do (http://thottbot.com/i9639) exist (http://thottbot.com/i25836) in-game (http://thottbot.com/i16769), but they're one-handed maces, so minor-totems.
http://i.thottbot.com/ir/28194-1.jpg
Totems would be two-handed maces, were they in at launch. Tauren were supposed to be very unique creatures. At launch, they had no mounts. They had Plainswalking which they became Holy Striders (http://www.wowwiki.com/Holy_strider) (Queue Ronny James Dio: o/` HOLY STRIDER / YOU'VE BEEN TRAVELING SO LONG RUNNING ON GOLD ROAD / OH WHY CAN'T WIND RIDERS BE FREE o/` because the Crossroads used to be the only flight point. Going to Razorfen was a bitch). Tauren also weren't supposed to wear armor, but have harnesses that would be unique to them (Hence the Harness Vendors in Orgrimmar and Thunder Bluff, that sell shit), but Blizzard never bothered to do the harness animations and instead just let them wear armor. They were also supposed to use Totem Maces, but they haven't bothered fixing the odd animation Cairne's totem gives, nevermind the clipping, so it's rather bleh.
The thing with the Tauren Units in WC3, besides being the most powerful ground units in the game, moreso when you upgraded them to use Pulverize, which basically make their huge melee attacks PBAoE.. actually that is the thing about them.

Yeah those look like totems, but nothing like the giant badass one that Cairne uses (yeah the animation is a bit odd) - I knew about plainstriding, but I didn't know about the harnesses. That's interesting.
And yeah, Tauren in WC3 roxx0rd the AOE.

Cairne also apparently chucks attackers off TB if you get him out of his hut when he's attacked. I have yet to see that tho. First Legion, attack! :D

I was always confused about that, and also Glaives. There's like, 15 different Glaive models in the game, but the only ones players can get a hold of are Illidan's. I SEE you using them, NPCs! Just fork em over already!

Blizzard =/= <3 4 Tauren
There's a lot of things about Tauren that have always just kinda... stood out as being odd and lacking. The things that truly set us apart as a race are only really BAD now. See if you can find any Tauren themed weapons out there (That totem "mace" you first see being held by a boss in ZF). The fact that they still haven't gotten around to letting us use all racial ground mounts annoys me to no end.

The guy on the Stair of Destiny uses the same weapon.
And yes, Cairn does chuck people off Thunder Bluff when he's aggrod out of his tent. There was about a week several months ago when Alliance guilds were apparently obsessed with killing all the horde leaders and would raid constantly... and they all used druid tanks.
Many flying bears were seen. I considered it karma that they couldn't shift into flight form on Azeroth and save themselves from becoming a splatter at the foot of the mesa.

I'd double my subscription rate to be able to stop riding kodos so I could use Plainsrunning.
In fact, everything Raz said was planned is exactly how I envision Tauren in my head, but fuck it--ease of design and balancing is more important, I guess. Le sigh.

Not EXACTLY what I meant by Tauren Weapon. More Tauren THEMED weapon.

Clearly it's a shield. Since a taurens fist is the only weapon they really need. That, and lightning bolts from their arses.

But the picture did give a certain nobility to the Tauren. It seemed to capture that Native American pathos very well.

actually, if anything that's more humanoid looking than tauren are. But he also doesn't have a totem, so he's just a shitty minotaur(d) ; b

Item of note**In thunderbluff on the upper rise is a tauren NPC named Tah Winterhoof and he owns a shop/tent named Winterhoof totems.. he is standing before a tent filled with totems such as that which Cairne Bloodhoof is seen wielding, although youcannot speak to this NPC nor can you purchase totem weapons from him it may indicate some racial link between tauren and totem weapons however he may alos have just been thrown in for extra 'flavour'

He's been there since Vanilla, back when they planned for Tauren to be able to wield totems.

At the end of vanilla they apparently were talking A LOT about having some sort of 'life quest' where you went on a huge quest chain only for your race and the end result would be some sort of racial weapon or something really amazing (see also: the sentinels' blades.) This obviously never came about (no Im not looking for 'proof' ; b) and I dont think they put anything in that resembled that at all. So yeah, write letters.
Also, nice necro, new guy.
