View Full Version : Yat's RP sketches

Roleplaying - whether it be on the forums or in game - gives me le inspiration.
It also takes me forever to actually fully finish a piece. But I enjoy getting the rough idea out on paper in my sketchy style deal-io.
I figured what the hell, I could show this off instead of making a new thread every 3 months for the next finished piece of work I put out. SKETCHERY.
They might be of my characters or someone else's - I'll ask permission to draw yer chars via PM if I feel like it. ;)
Feel free to critique (in fact, I encourage critique! helps me out. And don't worry about being mean. :P) - just keep in mind they're never going to be 'clean' cause they're just sketches.
ON TO THE ARTS.

-Very- nice there Yat : ) -- I like the movement that goes along with the cloak and the shield. The position is great, and the only thing I can honestly see that bothers me is the way the hammer is evident when it looks as if the cloak is still being drawn off and away. Perhaps if the head of the hammer was apparent beneath the cloak? I'm not sure. Either way, awesome drawing of the cowcow. : )

Thanks - I'm not exactly sure what your comment means -
Let me quote the original paragraph where I drew the pic from:
Unwrapping the robe from the one handed mace, Diomades reached back to unbuckle his shield and hefted it in his off hand. He was not wearing his usual red armor, but rather a sea blue set of scales. The black and red of his tabard in stark contrast to his blue armor. Watching as the remainder of the Alliance forces marched out of the Drag, he stood with one hoof back and his shield bought forward, ready for anything.
So it seems to me that he's drawing the mace out from the cloak and throwing the cloak away - which is what I drew, only stylish. Perhaps if you re-word it, I'd get what you're saying. XD

Oh o.o I see the handle's direction now. o_O I thought you were drawing the head a bit too horizontal I guess, rather than tipped toward a sort of angle toward his hoof closest to the viewer. It looked like the handle was simply the part of the haft that penetrated to the otherside of the mace and he'd already drawn the cloak off and it was simply in the process of falling rather than gripped in his hand.

I LOVE the fact that tossing the Robe away from the mace makes it look like he has wings, like some sort of Tauren Angel of Death.
... you drew Dio! Yaaay!

Yeah now that I look - the angle is a bit odd. Oh well. XD

I think the only thing you need to work on is the legs and the way they move, at first glance I thought you hadn't drawn them digigrade at all before I realize that you did and his hoof was just pushed far back on the right leg (His right).
The upper body I think you've gotten perfect, and I'd give comment on the head but I given that this is a messy sketch (which I love) I don't think definition is all that important, and saying anything about the head/face in particular would be pointless as a result.

Yeah if I'd left the other leg (which i drew really well, I was le sad when the cape dictated that i cover it up) in the open - it would have been obvious heh. I'm REALLY bad at those kind of legs - this is one of my best attempts at them. Had to look at some reference.
Yeah, the head I didn't worry too much about other than shading against the glowing eyes and making it look tauren-y, since it's so small I didn't want to overdo the detail with just a sketch.

On a bench beside the fountain (right next to the steps) in the Court of the Sun sat a Forsaken in a hat and a traveling suit. The shadow cast from the brim of his hat shrouded a large portion of his face. He had a briefcase right beside him. - Xiphus, Betrayal and Redemption

I noticed you sketch alot like I do, using 'hairy lines' as I was once told back in good ol' Elementary School art classes. Basically, its a bunch of lines while you try and figure out what one looks the best. BUT THEY'RE ALL SO PRETTY!
Anyways, sketches like this, and as I mentioned in my little howdy doody critique on your other post, can be a good showing of onces actual skills/talents/uber-ness. Finished pieces can be nice and all, but often times, you don't really see what someone goes through, step by step, to get said piece.
kudos to the kodos!

I know, the more the merrier, right? More lines > less lines.
I'm really trying to translate my dirty style into something that will look professional and finished, but still have my "mark" on it. It's quite hard.

Yah I know what you mean, I often make a dirty scruffy sketch, copy and paste, lighten up the contrast, and 'trace' basically.
Alot of professional illustrators will sometimes do their sketches, then sketch again in a blue or red pencil, then use a light box, then do the final drawing in pen, then scan it, and on and on and on.

You know, I kinda thought that the claw will look very vicious (in my head, the tip bone and the middle bone were fused into a curving scythe-like claw). But all in all, yeah, the lawyer thing does indeed come to mind whenever I think of Xiphus in a traveling suit (In Bir's 'Watch Your Back, Stranger', Xiphus does resemble a lawyer when he was in his traveling suit 'interrogating' a member of the RAS about his research results).
He who loses the court case shall have his brain eaten!
Your sketch is good. I wish I have a portion of your drawing skills. Add more shadings with the hairy lines and it looks like film noir.

I was going to shade more, but it was looking a bit -too- messy. Probably because I tried to color it black since that's how i envisioned it. I'm sure normal shading woudln't be too bad - i just didn't do it this time. XD
Maybe I'll make another, forsaken in suits are fun to draw. :D

Those are awesome! You mention wanting to give them your mark. I think that all artists inevitably give their works their personal mark-it evolves organically out of the creation process. Polish these up-I can't wait to see!

Also note, Xiphus is incapable of smiling. Those muscles required to perform that action had long atrophied. That also resulted with his shriveled lips, so he always wear a permanent frown.
Which only makes it scarier because people will have to look at his razor sharp teeth whenever they talk to him and he isn't masked.

Shenanigans going down at the RC's impromptu meeting at Sun Rock after the Gathering of the Guilds at Grommash Hold. Felt inspired to draw the Arsonist of Infection. ;D
It's a bit more detailed/shaded than my other sketches thus far in the thread - that trend may or may not continue depending on how I feel. :P

Orcenkind cannot sew anything without first stitching something in return. To create purples, mats of equal value must be lost. That is Tailoring's First Law, the law of Bullshit. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one and only truth.
