I began to get very frusterated by the constant OOC chatter that's been leaking through Stormwind in /S and /Y and I just felt the need to write a statement to the Non-RPers. It started out on that and then I felt I should define a few terms. One thing led to another and I now have a short guideline for beginning Roleplayers. Tell me what you think, adjustments, arguments or things to add.
================
Role Play does not mean cybering. Since a lot of non-roleplayers believe this I felt I should state this clearly. Role Play is like acting without a script, it is improv, it's creating a charecter and putting on a show.
We don't care if you don't want to Role Play, we don't mind if you hate it. We do mind when you try to make our experience of the game miserable because of your opinions.
There are Terms of Use specific to Role Play servers. It is here.http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20458
For the most part, we won't care. You can have your Trade chats, general chats and party chats. All we request is for /s and /y
I will not grief you, please do not grief me.
RP/PVP does not mean RP or PvP, it means both. We are here to enrich RP with PvP and the reverse. If you choose only to PvP, that's fine. If you choose only to RP, that is fine. Please be considerate of us, we are not sims, we are real people who are trying to enjoy a game.
If you remember this, we can get along fine, you may even enjoy the show.
Terms for Role Play and basic conduct for starters
-OOC: Out Of Charecter, any form of chat or behavior that is not played as the charecter itself. On WoW usually expressed in (( ))
-IC: In charecter. Self explanatory, see above
*God Modding:
-following through on an action with no consideration about the reaction of the other player.
Example=*Bob punches Fred, making him crash through the wall*
This is not fair to Fred as he gets no opportunity to avoid the action and is a lot like taking out the dodge ability in PvP.
Good Example= *Bob throws a punch at Fred so he will crash through the wall*
Fred can respond and try to avoid the punch or let himself get hit and go through the wall.
-Keep your thoughts to yourself. Unless the person you are roleplaying with can read minds, it's not expected they will know exactly what you are thinking.
Example: "Bob thinks you are an idiot and wants you dead."
Hopefully, Bob can keep his thoughts to himself and unless he wants to openly state that he would like nothing better then to gut you alive, you won't be aware of this. A better way to express this line might be: "Bob glares daggers at you, he looks like he wants to kill you."
*Behavior and Grammer:
-Unfortunatly, this is important, but it's important in the way that you would clean up the orange juice you just dropped on the carpet. It's not necessary, but it would be nice. When I say grammer I don't mean following all the rules of the english language, I mean grammer in the way that if you write a report no teacher worth their beans will accept LoL as a substitute for "laugh" or U as an abbreviation for "You"
-Punctuation may not seem important at first, but it can express a lot of what you are trying to say.
First example: "I am angry?"
Second example: "I am angry!"
-It is fine if your charecter is just a horrible person, but there really is no need to go on spamming the same insulting behavior over and over again. A good guideline being if you were at a resturaunt, you would not normally put the bowl of soup on your head and go dancing on the table.
*Making charecters
Playing over powered charecters is no fun and if you can dodge everything, even the 2,000 pound boulder that is rolling toward you at 300 miles an hour, then you will find very few people willing to be patient enough to play along. A good balance of strengths and weaknesses is fun and challenging and your RP experience will be better for it.
While RP is only limited by your imagination, it is usually frowned upon to make modern day personalities for this particular setting. While gnomes are very skilled engineers, I don't think any of them have made ipods yet. No one should know who Barack Obama is or any current events for that matter aside from this little realm.
-It is important to keep your charecter's backstory within some basic logic. While this is not of vital importance it can become embaressing if you claim you are the King of Stormwind when your charecter is very clearly a Draenei. www.wowiki.com Is a very good place to check up on lore.
*Descriptions
-Seperate opinion from fact and try to keep it simple.
An example: "Jane's glistening golden hair sparkles in the sun, cascading down her back like the waves of the sea just after a storm. Her eyes are the bluest of the blue, sparkling shining like the brightest diamonds in the sky and melting the heart of every man. True, she is beautiful and men bow at her feet."
Not many people may sit to read this and it's likely not every man will bow at Jane's feet so a better example would be. "Jane has long golden hair that falls down her back in waves. Her eyes are deep blue and to many she might seem beautiful."
