I know we're doing guild chat in character, but how are we defining it?

The most common "in character" guild chat excuses I've heard are...

--Hearthstones. Basically, you use your hearthstone as a walkie-talkie.

--Gnomeboxes. Basically, you carry around a technological device that doubles as your guildie walkie-talkie.

--Guild Hall. Basically, you're all in a "guild hall" in regards to guild chat.

What do people think about this, and what do they prefer? Why?

I asked this question earlier, and the consensus seemed to be some sort of mobile communication device- hearthstones or walkie-talkies. Personally I prefer a guildhall type setting, but I know some people don't like this as they feel like they are trying to be in teo places at once.

I'm flexible, either/or.

I'm same as Zazu, but I'll go with what the consensus feels is best. I guess since I normally grind, rping as though it's in another time or somewhat removed from the moment doesn't bother me.

Guild hall is a big no. Two places at once doesn't work. If I wanted to RP out being in a bar I'd go join Aol (no offense, just how I feel). IF someone finds an item how do they ask the guild who wants it? Can't do it in guild chat.. thats somewhere else.. somewhere where they did not find the item. What about looking for groups in guild chat? nope still can't.. i mean.. you'd have to phrase not being where you are to get the group.. and then you'd go there.......... yet still be in the guild hall. That's just confusing.

Communication. I don't care how you look at it its plausablie.
Hearthstones
-- It gives another purpose to the item we all carry with us.. it makes it a communication device. This can be used to explain all forms of chat.. guild, party, raid whispers.. everything.

gnomebox
-- Same thing as the hearthstone, just doesn't take up any inventory space.

Telepathy
-- When one joins a guild, one takes on a telepathic bond with all others within the guild. This isn't really all that farfetched in a fantasy game where people fling fireballs, others summon deamons.. and everyone can teleport.. some to more places than others.

Mind you... could always just make a guild specific rp chat for us who want to RP that we're in say a Guild Hall or some kind of location that means something to the TNG... Perhaps TheNetherGrill ... That way those who are opposed to the idea of the bar chat won't be forced to see it.

I like the RP in a bar chat. I hated AOL though.

I was an IRC baby in my teens. #pern alllll the way.

The best by far guild chat I have ever participated in was set in our Guild Hall. Everyone in the guild embraced the idea, and because we knew it was a game noone blew a fuse over (( OOC )) game questions and/or trading or looking for group requests. It was the accepted convention and for the most part everyone was pretty relaxed about IC commentary that "broke" the third wall- the main thing was- NOT to disrupt those who may be RPing a conversation/interaction in the guildhall.

I have never found a group of WoW players able to do this.

The only reason the "communication device" theory even makes sense to me NOW over the last 4 days is because I have created a gnome engineer. In fact I MAY adopt this as my SEND style-

Whisper Acitrom: Breaker breaker Big Chief- got two Deaders on my tail- thought I' send a head's up. Copy?

I like the idea of using multiple chat channels to create different locations however- seems like you may need them for the different "squads" of your guild anyways though.

I completely agree with Trilok.

Guild Hall pretty much limits your chat in several ways -- When you want someone to make bags, want to send them something, etc etc etc, saying you'll "send it in the mail" or "receive the materials when we next meet" wouldn't make sense for the fact that you're theoretically standing next to eachother.

I throw my support behind hearthstone communication. I hate gnomes and don't care for telepathy. >.>

I hate the idea of a guild hall. It completely ruins the immersion for me.

I mean, if I'm in Westfall killing Defias, how am I supposed to be cyborzing in a guild hall, or sharing drinks.

Hearthstones, or telepathy is the way to go. Maybe this mysterious elf that formed the guild is able to make us communicate. We already possess the "power" to recognize each other and find each other.....

I'm also against the idea of a guild hall myself, because I don't really like the idea of being in two places at once. Or the excuse of "it was a different time/place".

I'm in favor of hearthstones or gnome boxes. Something where we can be existing in the real world without guild chat conspiring against us.

Out of the three options, I chose hearthstones.

The walkie talkie is the same thing; but we have a hearthstone already... it's an actual item in the inventory, and it already pulls us through the fabric of space. Heh, and if you want to get creative - it also attunes us to an 'inn.' So... something that takes you to a place to sleep, as well as giving you a means of communication, is "realistic."

We had a conversation about this before. What I found really creative was that the hearthstone also has the option to give you a "visual" display - like Star Wars. This explains very well the way people can do physical actions to you (smile, laugh, pop a bewbie out to show you the new piercing), as well as showing you items they found.

Inn? Eh. Too 'unrealistic,' and promotes not really having to do face-to-face. I also love to use the excuse, "why don't you come find me, and I'll give it to you." I can't do that if we are in an inn setting... because you are supposed to be there with me!

"Brenan, give me that bag."

"Ach, sure... just let me put on this table 'ere that be shaped like a mailbox... and ye can grab it in an 'our."

I choose gnomish device because who cares if it isnt an actual in game item it is a device made clearly for communicating. The hearthstone is ridiculous if you ask me. The game makes it clear it is a magic rock used for teleporting to a inn, the end. I think of myself talking to a rock in game and I think.... man kark looks like a retard doing that. Walkie talkie or "communicator" as I prefer is perfectly logical and fits in game just fine. Who cares if it isnt a "real" item, it isnt like I ever take my hearhtstone out of my pocket and flash it at people either.

Just for the sake of argueing Kark :P ((so no offense intended))

Where does the make make it *clear* that the hearthstone is to go to an inn and *nothing* else. I'm pretty sure it doesn't go that far into depth.

As for the made up gnomish device? Where's the fact that says, "This is *clearly* only for communication"

We can go with the gnomish device that's fine, but if we do, I'm just warning you now that Fidget will take claim to the invention of it all the time. :D

I'm more game to the Gnomish device myself. I've never liked the hearthstone idea, it's silly. We have the technology, we have the gnomes! We can make it better, faster, and with text-messaging, picture-taking, wallpaper-downloading technology. And tetris! :P

So.. if its gnomish.. it does backfire right? because that is the trademark of gnomish.. something has gotta backfire.. no explosions means the possibly of impolosions and summoning a duck onto your head.

Duck on the head? Thats bad.

I like either hearthstones or some kind of other communciation device. Gnomish is fine. (mistells = backfire?) I don't really have a preference between the stone and another item, as long as I'm not expected to actually have that item in my inventory.

I really like the hologram image idea. I think that would give us a lot of freedom in the guild channel, especially if we get a character that doesn't talk much. On the other hand, we have a lot of people in the guild, so it may become too much scrolling text too.

I like the idea of a separate IC channel for a guild hall or tavern too. Between the two, I'm partial to the tavern. I don't have a problem pretending I'm in two or more places at once and keeping them all separate. In character reality, they happened at separate times, even if you're RPing in the inn with someone who's in your party out in the world at the same time. Plus, it would make long flight paths much more entertaining.
