Not at all WoW themed, but since it's Gaming themed I thought I might be able to get away with it.

http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs31/f/2008/229/e/1/Custom_Me_26_Jet_WIP_by_Diomades.jpg
Recoloring of a WWII jet done for my Image Manipulation class. I was hoping to actually do more with it and get a more metallic texture going on before I handed it in, but then I got sick last week and didn't get a chance to do so. Instead it remains like this. Still, I think it will be one of the better class, and I hope it is - there's a little competition for the best one in class and a $50 voucher riding on it.

http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs32/f/2008/229/5/a/Submarine_WIP_by_Diomades.jpg
Early render of the 3D model I whipped up in 2 hours in my 3D modelling class that my lecturer was extremely happy with. I missed class the week before to attend the Game Developers Conference, so I hadn't started where everybody else had, and yet it was his favorite model in the class. I liked it so much myself that I've since been working on a texture for it as an extra-curricular project.

http://fc05.deviantart.com/fs31/f/2008/229/6/9/Underwater_Scene_by_Diomades.jpg
The start of my underwater scene for my 3D modelling class. It's all very simple at this point with no real textures or lighting. The week after I did this (that is, last week) I missed my class because I was sick, so I had to work on it from home over the weekend to turn in yesterday. Which turned out this;

http://fc06.deviantart.com/fs37/f/2008/242/9/b/Underwater_Scene_1_by_Diomades.jpg
Imagine the scene without the submarine in it, because that is what I turned in to my teacher (as requested, I might add; we were asked to remove the submarine to turn the scene in). It's fully lit and fully textured with custom bump and specular maps. The shells were particularly fun to do, but I won't go into the specifics of how they were done. The Submarine is still being worked on but the texture currently on it at the moment may as well be considered its "completed" texture. I also had to drop a little easter egg into the whole scene as an ode to the Game Design studio that convinced me to get into this course to begin with.

More arts as I do them!

Completed the sub in my free time this afternoon. Added a bunch of barnacles and put them on the specular and bump maps, too. Can't seem to duplicate nature JUST right but I'm definitely happy with the way it looks now (It looks better in the proper lighting of the underwater scene). I'd need to spend a few more hours looking for reference images and playing around in Photoshop and 3DSMax at the same time for longer to get it absolutely perfect in my mind though, and my old PC can only take so much at a time. So it's alright as it is for now.

The sooner I get that damn student loan to buy my new PC the better.

Well, my plane won that in class competition (Woo thirty bucks onto Fallout 3!) and we got started on a new assignment in Image Manipulation and our new project in our 3D Modelling class.

http://fc01.deviantart.com/fs37/f/2008/257/c/a/WIP_Creature_by_Diomades.jpg
First is my retexturing of a creature model in our Image Manipulation class. YES, HE HAS BOLLOCKS! And I had to texture them. I probably spent too much time texturing them to get them just right in great detail.

*Cough*

No, I did not download reference images!

Anyway, the idea for the task was to create a retexture that made plenty of use of the bump and specular maps. You can see pretty well where my bump maps are used (all around the darker, craggly skin) and you can see how un-shiny the model is... funnily enough, the spec maps are most obvious where you can't see it. That is, his dong and the inside of his mouth. But you can see the effect of the spec map on the more craggly skin (I wanted to make it a bit more shiny).

http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs37/f/2008/257/3/e/The_Fish___Step_1_by_Diomades.jpg
The first step on the path to designing my fish! Again another little reference to a certain studio here, much less obvious than the last though (and even less known, most likely). This was all the easy part. All our 3D Modelling is a mix between box and plane. I start out by creating a flat plane and extruding it out over the length of the fish to create the shape, before extruding the fish outwards to give it depth. I extruded it once to define the fins and then a second time to define the body...

http://fc08.deviantart.com/fs36/f/2008/257/5/8/The_Fish___Step_2_by_Diomades.jpg
... which eventually grows into this. He's been given a mouth (which you can't see), some fins on his sides (which were an absolute pain to do) and some eyes, as well as a little more definition all over his body. He's slowly but surely getting there now. I'm taking some artistic liberties with his design since he is, after all, based on a more cartoony fish - said liberties most visible in the eyes themselves. I'm really, really happy with how he's looking so far. All that's really left to do now is create some textures for him.

Are you making these in photoshop and the like, or using something similar to OpenGL code?

Either way, I'm very impressed.

Photoshop for retexturing. 3DsMax for modeling. We get a UV (or Pelt) for the models and basically create our textures over the top so they wrap around the model, like this. This is the UV map for the Creature. I won't show you the actual wireframe I built this over the top of, because you'll get the general idea from this picture.

I found Nemo! He's in the post above Taknar's!

That looks nothing like Nemo! He just happens to be orange. When I'm done with him he'll be orange, pink and purple.

Well, it only took a quarter of my day, but it's done! Six hours later, I've got a nice clean UV map and am testing it out with a quick little texture map to see if all the seams are okay.

UV Maps get easier after you do them a few times. There's also 3rd party tools that are smarter about the initial mapping that will cut your time down significantly.

I found that during the latter half of doing my fish. It probably didn't help that I have Turbosmooth set to two separate iterations rather than just the one, so it made a lot of really tiny fiddly bits around the tips of the fins. But it got a lot easier after I got the general idea and know-how in those first 4 hours.

The soft pink undercarriage was half the point! If he ever was put in the game, you knew to hit his weak point for massive damage.

Some more progress on my little fish, and I also TOTALLY finished my creature (which I'll post up later, I only have 10 minutes and am on a 62K connection right now). Starting to work on the textures way ahead of schedule. I might end out doing a second fish just because Sof (this fish) is already almost finished, but it means more work at animation time.

Well, I just found it odd because creature skin colors don't necessarily change with the genital areas. Different texture, maybe... but if that's what you were going for, then I can't really argue. :P

Not that I think a creature like that would be walking around like a regular person... so much as lumbering about like an ape.

Last time I tried the co-op campaign online with somebody in the U.S. it didn't go too well, but HOPEFULLY that issue was resolved. I'd definitely love to do do the vidmaster challenge.

Got my underwater animation done (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CHqzcoI7sI) way back.

I've also got started on an environment in Maya for our Environmental Design class this year. This is just to get the textures laid out seamlessly.

There really is. This is a good example. And that's just a simple platformer. We have to make artwork that spans the length of this image not once, not twice, but three times over.

All for just 5 minutes worth of gameplay.

It doesn't really give you a sense of the scale of this file. It really is dauntingly huge.

Very nice. The transition from light side to dark side with the light of cities beneath the space ship was awesome. I like the choice in music as well.

The world is interesting as it seems totally alien to our own as it lacks any big masses of water.

I can't wait to see more.

Something I just noticed, the boxes at the top? That symbol looks like a Tau symbol, yet the space ship doesn't look like anything I've seen from WH40K. I got all excited about it though =/

Part of the reason why I chose that texture for the planet (which is actually a mossy rock) was to make it basically the opposite of earth, with 70% land mass and 30% water instead. And I'm glad somebody noticed the cities, they were such a simple but cool effect.

Heh! I actually used it as a reference to Marathon, the game by Bungie. If you look really carefully at the underwater scene on the second page, you can see the same symbol on the rear fin of the submarine, too.
