this is my first piece to show folks here. i tried looking for some of the other 3d art to see what else gets posted, i didn't have any luck. anyway, hope this is enjoyable to look at. not a fully pic by me, just something i made for our guild's first website. and i wanted to put up something half assed and see how it gets received. its okay if its not your thing. i think its very pretty.

Are these all default models and props with poser, or do you download them? I've considered Poser on and off as a pose reference program (so much easier than requesting specific poses from stock photo models), but not if I'd have to buy extra models and props.
Pearlle
11-01-2008, 01:28 PM
poser 7 and i think 8 is out now too, both have wonderful default models or figures that would serve your purpose. and i think the latest version also has one of those posing figures you buy as an artist, the one made of wood that looks like a puppet of sorts, no real features. the poses also come with the program.
i have about 2k worth of props and models cuz it's kind of what i do (yes i ought to be so much better after this many years). so what you see me using is not the default. but for what you describe, alphaeus, you could definitely use poser for. would even help with shadows and lighting too i'd think.
thanks for the comments!

To clarify... you are using purchased 3d models and playing dress up? When creating facial structures, is it done via. wire form or default facial expressions? Or do you create the textures yourself? I was confused by some of what was said in the thread.
Pearlle
12-09-2008, 10:44 AM
i could leave it at dress up, but it's sometimes more fun to customize. you get the "wire figure" as you referred to it as, and you "morph" it with a gazillion dials. you can use packaged and ready-made things, or fiddle. sometimes i do one, sometimes i do another. same with textures. lil artwork in photoshop and you make it your own. or you make it from scratch. thankfully with pearlle, she's just a typical elf right now. i'm hoping to get her some tattoos in roleplay; when i do i'll need to customize the existing texture and add them using photoshop, then re-add them in the program. 3d programs like this are as simple or as hard as you want them to be. throwing things together can take you five minutes. or hours. mine usually take an hour or two, to fiddle and get it the way i want.
i'm working on a kadesh figure now. *shakes head* forgot to add elf ears, of all things. his figure is less "packaged" than pearlle because i want him to look a certain way, and no merchant has made the ideal character before.
the hard part for programs like this is the creativity. and making things as life-like as you can, rather than just "hand on hip" or "smile". you want the nuances that make it live. i try that. i don't always get it. i get closer every time. sometimes, even though i have a good thousand dollars worth of software for this program, i get an idea and can't accomplish anything. it's like pearlle's bank vault! 57 dresses and nothing to wear!
thanks for asking good questions!

Sorry if I came across as rude or the like. I can appreciate wire frame work and textures. But just throwing on other models and such is kinda blegh =p More patience then I have with that stuff, I managed to make a positionable baby face once, and a 3d tunnel you'd ride through. maybe the software has gotten better from then.

no, i was prepared when i saw who posted ;) i knew not to take it personal, you're just very straightforward. it's a good thing.
some programs used by ppl even here i believe, i forget who, are straight up make-it-from-scratch. you use magnets and pull shapes into being. that i can't do...yet. i've got carrera and bryce but my computer can't handle those. poser is resource intensive.
right now i've been working....two, three hours? on an image that is just a pic of kadesh's head and pearlle's head. can't get it right. but it is a patience thing.
i was thinking of showing some stuff here in my lil thread about what it looks like before rendered, what poser looks like and how it works. it really can be easy and quick. but the best stuff doesn't look 3d, like mine does, and looks like something drawn or painted. heh we spend all this time learning and working with a program that's as far from traditional as you can get...just so we can get a final product that's traditional looking *facepalm*

If you're serious about 3-d modeling, I'd suggest learning to use 3d Studio Max or Maya, as they are industry standards. Poser isn't really used professionally, except as reference for artists who use the models like real-life models. It's okay for lighting practice with lighting, but if you're planning on entering the 3d world professionally you have to be able to model these things from scratch. Generally, that either starts with box modeling, or modeling from a single polygon. Poser models tend to be insanely high-poly, which is okay if you're just taking single shots, but when you're modeling yourself, the challenge is to make a model that is low poly and still looks good. That's where texturing comes in.
Then again, if this is a hobby, go nuts!
Pearlle
12-11-2008, 12:18 PM
it's professional ;) i make about $120 every six weeks or so, plus i get some extra royalties as it were for sites where my 'characters' become the mascot that leads the customer around the site, 3d navigation of a sort. one of the ppl i work with makes a couple hundred a month with her artwork. that's what i'm heading towards. and once i perfect myself as a merchant, i'll be adding a couple hundred to my income each month. poser is not used in film or movie making industries. but it's got a huge following and lots of professional utility.

Well see, that's what I mean. From a creative developers standpoint, Poser can't be used because you need to purchase models and give credit to other artists, which isn't cost efficient. It's like buying someone's dolls, and doll clothes, posing them, and taking pictures. Some companies use poser models as short cuts, but not for gaming or film.
Well, scratch that... Black Isle used Poser models for Icewind Dale II because the company that they comissioned to make the models were lazy assholes. I think they were blacklisted after that mini fiasco.

er *scratches nose* no...when we read the licenses for the products we get, we don't have to give credit to anyone. whether it's a product that will be used for a free image or for purchase for print - we do get our work printed for hanging on walls or for graphic novels - we don't have to credit the merchants. we don't worry about who makes the crayons, we focus on making the pictures. it takes a lot of creativity, if you're into it. the picture i'm working on now for a christmas contest has taken me probably eight hours. poser isn't ideal for game or film. i don't compete in those fields so i'm not really worried about it's usefulness there. the people i work with make a living off poser images and products. it pays the rent and feeds their addiction to their software. i wish wow would let me do that without making me feel immoral, haha! anyway, using poser for a regular income is what i'll do soon. i have no doubts about it. i know poser has a bad name with those who can afford more expensive programs. the rest of us just work with what we gots. i got poser. i'm doing really well with it =D
