View Full Version : Coming out of the RP closet ((OOC, serious and long))

This is probably going to be a long post, and I may piss a few of you off, but bear with me and try to understand a few things as I explain them. This has been bothering me for months, and I feel if I get it off my chest I can go on and feel better about everything.
I've been lying to a great number of you. I'm really a guy. My name is Jon and I'm a professional fantasy/pin-up illustrator. I'm married and have two kids, and am a straight as an arrow RPer and self proclaimed geek. My wife is Tracey, and she plays the mage Imogenn.
Let me explain why I've been lying and why its been tearing me up for a while....
When we first got WoW, my wife and I created characters on Cenarian Circle. My first character was a female human mage named Munni (who was originally going to be a bank character, but I really liked the mage class). I made no effort to hide my true gender from the RPers on CC, and never really thought it would be a big deal.
I was wrong. Once word got out that Munni was played by a guy, I started getting messages from people telling me I was a freak, that I was gay, yadda yadda yadda.....A LOT of messages. People seemed to think there was a problem with crossgender roleplaying and that you were weird if you played the opposite gender.
Rest assured, this irritated me a bit. I don't have problems with homosexuals (our roommate is bi-sexual), but I love women way too much to be considered one. True, it doesn't matter what other people think, but on a "RP" server like Cenarian Circle, I found that the RPers could be just as cruel as the PVP kiddies. I had trouble getting groups, I had people making fun of me.....You name it I heard it.
So when Twisting Nether opened I decided to try something new. I was going to roleplay a female, and pretend to be a female roleplaying it. I never thought there would be a problem, and figured people would get off my back with the "Fag" or "Gay" statements...And since I didn't know anyone on this server, it wouldn't be a problem. My wife told me it was kinda silly, but she understood why I was doing it.
Thats where the problems began....With my lie. Turns out, I made several friends on this server, and it began to be too late to tell the truth. To get the RP immersion, I felt I almost needed to keep up the facade and pretend I was a woman in real life. The monkey climbed on my back and got heavier and heavier. I even posted a pic of my sister and said it was me to get people to stop asking me to see my photo.
That was pretty much the lowest point.
Anyway, the entire time I felt that not only was I doing you guys wrong by lying to you, but I felt I was doing my wife wrong also, because as she advanced in level and people found out we were married, they automatically assumed she was my husband, and I did nothing to deny that fact. So I not only lied to you people, but I force my wife to lie by virtue of my lie.....
That WAS the lowest point.
At this point, my wife and I are advancing characters and she is hitting her first 50+ character. This week I've been thinking about it alot. We've been wanting to bring our characters into the Swordwaltzers, and I know Kurohane thinks Imogenn is my husband....That isn't fair to either my wife OR to Kurohane. This is why I'm finally saying to hell with it and telling the truth. This lie has gone on far too long and has caused more grief than its worth.
This is a game we all play to have fun. When deceit enters into the picture, the liar cannot be trusted again, and this has been really hurting me.
So today I decided to come out of the RP closet....I'm opening up and being honest....And I'm asking you guys to forgive me for my lies. I'm also asking you to not judge why I did it, and to keep roleplaying with my characters as if this OOC stuff never happened, because as true roleplayers, we have to keep our characters separate.
I throw myself at your mercy. If you want me around, and want me to keep playing my characters with you, I'll do so, and I will never hide behind the gender thing again. If you all end up hating me for this...Well, I see Twisting Nether is open for transfers.
I don't want to lose you guys over this, and I am sorry if I have hurt any of you. I made a mistake, and I hope you can forgive me of this.

Wow, that's er.. damn, that's quite a revelation. Can't say it bothers me in the slightest though. It is odd that Cenarion Circle has such an attitude when I often see guys playing female toons here. Although it seems fine if you're a leet PvPer and you want a female toon so you 'don't have to stare at a guys ass all day'.
I must say, that is a MAJOR achievement in roleplay though.
Anyway, nothing changes for me. Hope to have you involved in any RP we can, in fact, expect a PM soon... and if you ever want to roll horde, Sanctuary keeps a seat open for you, right next to Xeran's.

Dude, it's no big deal! I play dudes all the time. Don't worry about griefers, they're just jerks. Play however you want.
I'm glad to see that you're a dude, but I liked you as a girl too. Either way is cool.
You and Clys can form a club, now.
Of people who totally had me fooled.

For some reason this doesn't shock me or upset me in anyway. Most likely becuase I myself play female characters off and on.
I can't understand why people find something wrong with it. They're all like, "If you're a guy you should play a guy, and that's that!". But it's messed up, because you see them playing Gnomes and Orcs and crap, and they're not a Gnome or an Orc in real life. Those people are basically saying that everyone should play a Human as well.
If you can roleplay a female as well, or possibly better than, a male, more power to you! Having fun playing the game is really all that matters.

As Grisch noted it beats the "I would rather stare at a womans ass all day" reason though I dont think that has anything to do with being a "leet pvper". I dont really care, if a character is female or male whatever I roleplay based on in game not out. Why a person in real life does something is no business of mine and doesnt bother me in the slightest.
Keep on keeping on.

If all female characters were played by female players out there, the number of females in the game would be very low... I dont think this is such a big deal, as long as you are having fun.

Hey! You're a good female! You had me fooled.
I'm sorry that you had such an experience on another server that it felt like you had to pretend on this server. One thing I've noticed about the TN community is ... the RPers are far more accepting of most things (including mature roleplay) than I've seen in any server I've been on.
Glad you got that monkey off your back. :)

8O :D I was floored to find that Clys was a man, but it is to be expected. I myself play a female character <Amadare> and play her as she should be a girl. I feel it detracts from the character if you act as though you are the opposite sex. I mean even Lesbian women, still don't act as though they are men. Anyways, you do a great job of it, so please continue.

You let it out completely voluntarily, it's the internet, nobody's going to know one way or the other.

Too be very honest - I thought you were a guy till the whole evil twin story line. After that I just decided to take your word for it.
But brilliant RP. Btw don't make this a public fact on the server because you will get alot of greif for it. I believe half of the server (alliance and horde) get wet dreams thinking of lovely :D :D

Yeah, I posted it here, and on the Swordwaltzers members page. I never even considered posting it on the official Blizzard forums, to be honest. I rarely post there anymore anyway, and posting it there would just invite 100 1337 kids to make fun of me on general (or the LFG channel, which is somehow the new general) for hours on end.

I just wanted to note something interesting here. I am a real life woman, and I play female characters without exception. Seldom do I meet anyone in game that does not call me "dude" or assume I am male in real life. It has always driven me crazy. I do nothing to suggest any masculinity.
I treat characters in terms of how I see them. I do not see a female avatar and assume a male is behind it or visa versa. I just think that the true identity of the person behind the character should not matter (and in other RP communities never did matter), and this strange phenomena of needing to know is interesting. I also wanted to add that this seems peculiar to WoW. It happens somewhat in EQ2 and it hardly ever happened in SWG (which was my MMO origin). The difference between the assumption in WoW and EQ2 is:
EQ2 : Player 1 "Hey dude, want to join our group"?
Me "It is not dude, actually"
Player 1 "Oh, fair enough, cool".
WoW: Player 1 "Hey Dude, want to join our group"?
Me "It is not dude, actually"
Player 1 : "WTF? girls don't play WoW".
Ironically, WoW's community (depsite being one of the newest in terms of MMO histroy) seems to be retrograde in accepting women as gamers, with older MMOs being far more accepting envirnoments. In my expereince of SWG, I played a female character and nobody ever treated me as male. WoW communities often assume that there is a "Dude" behind that female night elf.
Anyway. I am not meaning to derail your thread into gaming gender politics, but just sharing my surprise that you experienced prejudice on your original server in light of my expereince, which has somewhat been the opposite.

To be honest, I usually assume the person is a guy. It takes a -lot- to convince me otherwise. The reason for this? I have never met a girl IRL that plays WoW. But then, to me, it dosen't really matter when I'm IC. OOC I'm usually immature enough that if someone really -was- a girl they probably woudln't be talking to me so eh. Don't worry about it.

I assume 90% of the girl characters are guys too, and I only know a few in real life who are actually girls (my wife, my neice, a friend I used to tabletop game with, and one of my Collettores Royale guildmate's wife). But to me, it never really mattered.
I play RPG's to immerse myself in the world and have a good story, and when I'm RPing I do what the character would do, and I don't put any OOC thought into it whatsoever. I never wonder if "NE rogue #2943265" is a female in real life. Some are, and some aren't.
I just know I experienced quite a bit of predjudice on Cenarian Circle, and the entire server left a bad taste in my mouth anyway....
Instead of lying from the start, what I should have done is just stay in character ALL the time....But that wouldn't be any fun, because I wouldn't be able to cut up with you guys....
Oh well...Live and learn I suppose.
By the way, thank you all so much for the support. I was really nervous writing that first post....You guys are great!

No, really, doesn't bother me at all. I've already mentioned my discomfort, so to say, playing female characters, but the way you do it is unbelievable.
Another thing, I don't take what anyone says on the internet at face value. Anonymity sucks.

((Before TN, I played a female nelf hunter on a CB server. No particular reason, it was just cool. Then I got invited into a woman-only guild. I thought what the hell. I participated in guild chat and all that and they never picked up that I was male. That's about the time I figured I was ready to take the RP plunge. Then a friend told me about TN and the Grim. The rest, as they say, is history. Revisited the old character the other night; the girls were surprised but happy to see me. I told them I had changed servers to play with my son (who actually does play on TN) and that I would be very scarce. They were ok with it. But I didn't "come out" for them. Guess I'm shallow or something...))

Maybe people are upset because they thought they'd have their toon doing things with Teelia and then discover that they'd have ended up playing the crying game?
Not that I'm saying they'd get to play it, but it's just that some mature roleplayers might have difficulty thinking that they're flirting with a character played by a male...and immature people can't grasp the concept at all because of some strange association of the action as homophobia.
I played FFXI for a while, nobody RPed there really...and I played a female white mage because I did like seeing that character model moreso than seeing the backside of a male.
Who can blame you? I don't. You play the game and you roleplay, roleplaying communities should be proud to have you since they're always griping about how there should be more on the server.

Secondly I'm sure there are actually girls that play, but when ya keep in mind the male to female ratio... you have as good a chance at meeting a celebrity on WoW as meeting a girl.. roughly. (( don;t mess with my calculations, my cousins roomates little bro is a math major!))

Same here! It irritates me when people refer to me as a male for no reason other than "girls don't play WoW." I know quite a few girls who play WoW. Don't tell me I'm not a female just because you think this game is only for guys or something dumb like that.
I always assume the player is the same as the character until told different. I figure that is how they want to be portrayed, and I don't have any way of knowing any better. The other option is to call everyone "it" instead of he or she. ;)

But seriously ...
Meh. I've got a female troll hunter I play on Thorium Brotherhood once-in-a-while and I'm a guy. Doesn't phase me in the least. Though I was kind of surprised by the revelation. It's really beyond me why some people get upset that there's actually a guy behind that female toon. This is a game. When I'm playing my troll huntress, I'm not really a female and I guess that bothers people. However, I'm also not:
- A troll
- A hunter
- A member of the Horde
- Someone that lives in a city even remotely resembling Orgrimmar.
- Someone that wears leather armor
I have never fired a bow and arrow. I have never seen much less killed a quillboar. I do not explore caves, dungeons or castles in my spare time. I do not nor have I ever owned a tiger for a pet (and unlike my tiger, most of my pets never listen to me).
In the grand scheme of things, me playing a female is the least of the things I'm not in real life.

Actually, Lovely and Teelia have kissed and played around with several people. Especially Lovely. But all that was IC, and I never once thought of it as anything other than IC. I hope some of you that were involved don't get grossed out, but when you think of it, its pretty much just like writing a book, and in some books there are love scenes or scenes with kissing or whatever.

Hehe ... that's pretty much how I figure it. People that try to establish actual, real-life relationships based on their toons in WoW strike me as emotionally unstable anyway. If my character and your character got it on, it's not player to player, it's character to character. The Ace Ventura reference was just a joke, albeit a typically bad Xeran joke.

By the way Lovely, and this seems to have been lost somewhere along the way, it's a credit to your roleplaying skills to have pulled off being a female for so long.

Xeran, if Lovely kissed you (and I think she probably has at some point), its just the character, not me....Although paladins are HAWT!!!
hehe.
Teelia kissed Nouri last night, right in front of Imogenn (my wife's character), and I never for a moment thought anything about it other than the characters really like each other.
Holy Shite!.. How did I miss this thread?! 8O
Hehe seriously, I agree with you 100%. The fact you are a guy is really only of interest to me as a player in a trivia sort of way. Not to say that you're trivial Jon!. Its.. hmm. let me start over..
I role play as if Im an author in a large complicated series of stories. Some authors are male, some female. All authors include characters in their stories of both genders, (heck, in some Sci-fi/fantasy multi gender or non-gender!). Those characters have personal issues, friendships of various types, loving sensitive love interests and downright raunchy sex.
It doesn't matter of its written by Robert Jordan or Elisabeth Moon..
Just because Nouri has a crush on Teelia, who incidentally does look hawt in tight leathers from behind, shouldn't imply anything about me, the player and you, the player. We're authors writing a collaberation.
Now having said that, are we still on for that date? Or do we need Imogenn to chaperon?

You know cross gender stuff doesn't bother me, nor the reasons why people keep their true gender a secret. My husband (Clys) plays a female every once and a while when he wants to play something with a wider range of emotion, and the man is totally straight. It's an actor thing, I think. I know other servers that would have problems with it. I think the community here on TN, however, are more mature than that.
Besides, who's business is it what your gender is in RL except for the person you are sleeping with in RL?
It doesn't matter who or what you are in RL as long as it's legal. You're a great person, one of the coolest RPers I know because you are conscientious about making sure whatever is RPed is cool with all parties concerned.
Love you lots, Lovely/Teelia.

I think you're leaving out a lot more females than you give credit for, Zus.
Yar! I may not post much, but I am a female.
On topic, I don;t care what gender you are... but I think you are fantastic at playing a girl. ^.^
My husband plays a good bit of girl characters, it's really no big deal. He must play them well, because a lot of people are shocked to find out he's a guy IRL. Me however... people always think I'm a guy. 8O
On a side not, I -do- play girl characters so I can "stare at a girl's ass all day". Really, the main reason I've never played a male character is I'm not a fan of how the models look. And I care about looks... I've stopped playing characters in their 30s, only to re-roll the same race/class because I didn't like how the first one looked.

Besides, who's business is it what your gender is in RL except for the person you are sleeping with in RL?
On that note, I'd like to mention that if you are a big, beardy guy like me IRL, and you wear a dress into a bar with a bunch of friends for whatever reason, say, loosing a bet, or somesuch, then the girls WILL buy you drinks and strike up conversation. Conversation leads to laughing, and laughing can lead to ending up at her place without your dress anymore.
The Moral: People worry too much about this kinda thing. If there's any sort of maturity going on, then we can be reasonable and let people do as they please.
Oh, and the dress thing? True story. *Grumbles about incriminating pictures.*
Well, well. You know, I don't play Clys so I can stare at her butt. She doesn't really have much of one, all boney and stuff. I actually started her as a lark and she grew into one of my favorite characters ever.
For me, RPing is a way to experience things I cannot in RL. Of course Clys isn't a very girly girl, but I have played girlier ones. It's fun to put myself into a female role. And it broadens my vision of people.
I think of it as writing, really. And a male author who cannot portray a convincing female isn't much of an author. It's about observation, and empathy, to play any character who is not exactly like yourself.
Anyway, no worries, Jon. Actually it's nice to know that YOU are the artist. You play a great female. You're a fabulous RPer. Every character you've created has been interesting and deep. You're a great writer. And a great friend.
Hopefully, we'll get to RP together more, in this game, or another, as the years pass. I've always had a blast with you.
Don't go away. You're special!

I've been RPing for years...when I was 13, I had one of my most favorite characters that I played in the AOL RP chatrooms, in IMs, ect...he was a male fallen angel, and I found, RPed with, and constantly lied to a lady who played his mute female slave. I even put up a picture of some fellow when I introduced myself to more folks in that RP world as I was looking for others to RP with. As an amateur writer, I find myself wanting to play both sexes in order to hopefully be able to experience both branches (at least as much as I can) and therefor to improve my writing. My boyfriend plays a female orc. I know countless males who I have been very good friends with and who play female characters. Hell, I chatted for weeks with a very cool member of Invictus who I always assumed was female, until I ranted at him about a guy I was seeing and he said "you know how us guys are." I was surprised...then giggled at myself, apologized for all the girly gossip I tossed at him, and went on.
In a nutshell, as far as I'm concerned... -shrug, thumbs up, grin- So you're a dude...neat!
I always feel territorial around other actual females anyway. -shifty eyes- Finding out that there's a guy behind the toon always makes me feel better.

Actually, I was amazed by the number of girls that do play WoW. I usually refer to people by the sex of their character unless I have heard them on vent. Funny thing though, I have never seen a woman play a male character, I'm sure some of them do, but it seems so rare. Why is that ?
J-
There's a Dwarf Priest.. Male, who was once a member of Ironforge Regiment... and then transfered over to pinnacle.. and got on vent
and was girlier then I am :O
Her character name is Tovar, and her real name is Diane. And She's a sweetheart. She never once said "Oh btw I'm a chick behind here" She just played her character and let us all be suprised ;p
Lovely, I knew you were a guy.. no girl discribes the female body that well. Ever. I love your writing, and could care less that you're a guy. In fact, I think it makes me like you more, cause it explanes so much.
and Zus? I aught to kick you in the nads for making such a blanket statement! There are girls who play.. I just happen to be less girl and more mom >.< But if there's doubts, you can get on vent and come talk to me.. Even Odon's talked to me.. though, he was drunk at the time.. *shivers*
Or ask Gralin, cause he's the one who likes to knock me up. :p
or ask Sepheus, I visit him once a year when I go see my mother in law :D
Or go to the damned webpage I got linked.
Or.. I could always discribe childbirth to you in detail.. I think we gots a video around here somewheres.. ;)

Playing the opposite gender is too much fun. Especially when you take advantage of people. <3

07-13-2006, 07:16 PM
Male, female, it doesn't really matter either way. When you get down to it, what's a character? A cartoon, nothing more.
Alright, it's a cartoon with awesome gear, killer abilities, and its own history, but that's not the point...
The point is, it really doesn't matter. In game, if I see a female character, I address them as a female. If they're a male character, I address them as male. Regardless of their gender in real life, the game is just pretend. It's a game, that's all. While I've never played a female character (I'm male, btw), my own father has. I can't blame anyone, or think bad of anyone that's played a character of the opposite sex, simply because the game world and the real world are two different things.
Let me sum it up like this:
What happens in Azeroth, stays in Azeroth!

Seriously though, you're a guy. I'm a guy, Abric may be. We probably will never know.
It doesn't matter, I understand you're worried about our opinions of you now... Nothing's changed.
I view all characters IC from their Avatar's Gender, and I could care less about what your OOC Gender is.
On that note, real men wear pink dresses.

Vuudu will kill you all the same, no matter what the gender of your player. :)
I can't believe you actually got a lot of grief over playing a female. The only time I have seen people upset about a male playing a female character is ... well ... when they do what you were doing: pretending to be a RL female. That tends to raise the hackles of the more homophobic guys (i.e. -ZOMG, the girl I was fantasizing about is a guy?!?). In my experience, the best thing to do is to keep OOC as OOC. If someone asks, either tell them the truth or refuse to discuss OOC information.
By the way, I have the best reason for playing a female character: men give you things. It is uncanny. In Everquest, all my female characters were given gold, gear, weapons, etc., and all I had to do was shake my booty a little bit and tell them how handsome they are. Does that make me a whore? :)

I just got back from my trip. Personally, I don't mind in the least!
I'm an old-school roleplayer. I try and separate roleplay and out of character. Alot of people seem to think of characters, not just their own, within the gender archetype of the OOC player. I won't treat Lovely, Teelia, or any of your other personas any differently. Nor will I treat you any differently out of character.

I do have a female toon on this server, BUT this is my ONLY female toon. I have a level 60 male human mage on another server, and on that same server a level 32 male night elf druid. So if any of you are assuming that I'm a girl I'm not. I am however bisexual (kinda lol). If you wanna call me a pervert for writing the shit I write, go ahead. I play both genders, as the mood/character/styling suits me. In some cases (*cough*human*) I think the males are just really badly animated. Any night elf I would make would be female, and troll would be male, undead could be either, gnome....well I would never make a gnome, ew, dwarf male, orc, either....it all depends.
It's an rp server, anyone giving anyone else flak for gender choice needs to get over themselves.
