Some folks have a problem with the game where every time they alt-tab out and then come back in again, the sound is blaring at full volume. Especially unpleasant if you wear headphones like me.
The solution:
Navigate to your 'config.wtf' file in your Warcraft directory.
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WTF\
Open the 'config.wtf' file in notepad or any other text editor. Add the following line at the bottom of the file:
SET SoundMaxHardwareChannels "0"
Save the file and relaunch the game. Problem should be solved.

Sometimes my computer shuts down when I alt+tab. I've had WoW since retail and it's only been happening recently. And only with WoW. Sometimes it shuts down when I quit the game. It's not regular, but happens occasionally. **ponder ponder**
I'm thinking about re-installing the game.

Nice fix I have had it happen. Normally I will just do something to change the music, like enter battle, or move around in buildings blah blah because any change in music would return to the original audio level. Now I can just do this heh.

I've been wondering about this for weeks. I usually alt/tab on Griffons, and then when I return, there is blaring LoTR music, shocking me out of my chair.
Thanks for the info!

I Alt-Tab to jumpstart musical ambiance
I get to hear some neat tracks
The Zandalaar Island Soundtrack (Yojamba) is really good.

Came across it in a PC-gamer magazine. Lost the magazine and re-installed WoW a while later, and I just couldn't take it anymore, so I went and scoured the net for it. Eventually I found it on some obscure forum.
You would think something like this would be stickied at the top of the Warcraft technical support forum.

There's an even easier way, if it happens, hit ctrl-s twice
