View Full Version : Undead and Zerg: More than just "Similar"

First i will start with simple game mechanics from starcraft and W3:
Zerg have creep
Undead have blight
Ghoul-Zergling
Crypt Walker-Hydralisk
Abomination-ultralisk
This is just simple game mechanics. I realize the Undead "summon" buildings like Prtoss.
Lore wise:
Overmind-ner'zhul
Cerebrates-Lichs
Both are mindless minions of a higher power who creates them by "infecting" others (infested marines-infected villagers). The Higher power is an extremely intelligent creature that has his minions to his bidding and is dedicated to the complete eradication of all life other than its self.
Kerrigan-Sylvanis. Both infected/infested a female soildier of their enemy because they sensed she would be a good fighter, and this female broke away from the overmind/Ner'zhul and took a fraction of the Zerg/Undead with them. Though Sylvanis has yet to destroy Ner'Zul and claim mastership over the rest of the Undead Like kerrigan did to the Overmind and Zerg, I can say that one day this will happen.
Creation- Will not completely similar, both were created by an even greater power. The Zerg stuck back at the Xel Naga, and the Scourge struck back at the Legion.
So, why are they so similar?

Zerg are similiar to tyranid.
'Nuff said.

For gameplay purposes I'd say they were inspired with ideas for WC3 from Starcraft.
Same goes for lore I suppose. Look at the new Alliance race. Protoss.

Warhammer 40k for the lose. Definite, definite lose.
I had actually noticed all of those similarities except for the Sylvanas/Kerrigan parallel. Of course, there are major fundamental differences (I severely doubt the new broods have free will), but the plot itself is parallel enough.
Maybe colleges should start requiring Blizzard Lore for their majors in Women's Studies. XP

The Sylvanas/Kerrigan parallel? The fact that they're played by the same female voice actor?

If they ever made a "Galaxy of Starcraft" I could guarntee they would make Zerg have free will.
But no, they don't have free will. Their brains are to small to handle that kind of function in the first place.

They never had brains to begin with.
They were controlled by the Cerebrates.
They weren't even sentient creatures to begin with. All the zerg are just animals that were conquered and annihilated by the zerg and had their DNA spliced in with the Zerg Overmind to allow the Zerg to produce "Zerged" forms of said creatures.
All the Zerg were just animalistic beasts; predators. Their minds were never evolved beyond that. They are still just predators. With the mind of an animal, a beastial predator. They hunt, they kill, they eat.

Blizzard would find a way, trust me. If they seriously did make an MMORPG out of SC, just to keep al the kiddies happy, the zerg underlings would somehow develope brains.

Or we'd all play Kerrigan-esque zerg.

Doubtful on both accounts.

If that were to happen, it'd likely have to be the sentiently infested Terrans that we've only seen in Kerrigan and Duran. There are two problems with that. First, they were both Ghosts, who are inherently rare individuals to begin with. Second, if we only see two in the course of the game and expansion, with NO mention made of another, that implies that they're an extreme rarity, not the stuff MMOPCs are made of.
I should note that I believe Cerebrates to be comparable to Scourge Death Knights as well, not just Liches. All three garner their abilities from their respective patron, all three are sentient and direct troops, and all three are ultimately slaves. The fact that we are not able to play as Death Knights or Liches ties into the above point: too rare and too powerful for a thousand people to run around town with. Not going into the setbacks towards trying to make the Scourge an actual faction.

Duran wasn't infested.
He was just posing at it.
Duran was something else all together..
Most likely Xel'naga

Indeed, I was gonna say before Manus did..
Duran isn't Zerg, nor human, nor Protoss.. he is something else altogether.

Wasn't that touched on in the secret mission towards the end of the Zerg campaign in the expansion?
Besides, it'll be a hell of a long time before we know. Blizzard's too busy working on WoW. =P And they're probably really afraid to top StarCraft; even now, that game is a fucking great strategy game. A second game might break their Game of the Year record. Haha. And if they do happen to make "Galaxy of StarCraft," it would probably take a very. long. time. as in, longer than WoW. Another thing is, I doubt they want to make competition for themselves between the two games.

Actually the basis of world of warcraft is WarCraft III. WarCraft three's original platform was going to be a third-person platform, but fans of the WarCraft series protested early development stages so much that the game had to be rebuilt from srap into the more traditional RTS base that we see.
Rather than lose work, Blizard decided to continue development and turn it into an MMO
