specifically, were tauren there? i never finished the game and kinda missed out on that part.

Yes I believe they were part of the horde at the time of the defense of Hyjal. They are even tauren warriors with their log weapons in the hyjal instance that help a little bit for dps on the bosses/doomguards. They weren't as well established then as they are now with most tribes united under thunderbluff but they were fledgling allies of the orcs at the time of the fight.

Everyone was there, except for the Forsaken, since they didn't exist at the time.

There most definetly were Tauren there.
I just played the WC3 campaigns again for better story with my DK, and the one thing I remember is that there were two Tauren...
And they kept fighting...
And fighting...
And then Azgalor came around, and they landed the killing blow. Only Frost Wyrms could bring them down.
