OK.. this may get me lynched. But...
Does this site cost you anything maintain? You have done SO. DAMN. MUCH. With it.
Seriously it has become ... well.. I won't say the heart and soul of the rp community on TN, as the rpers themselves are that.
But you have made a place where they truly shine. I feel like I know people, I may -never- have gotten a chance to play with otherwise.
But I digress..
Does this website cost you anything? I mean even if time, Not to be horribly crass.. but.. I've thought this website needed a tiny paypal donate button at the bottom, because if this site costs you anything to maintain, it sure as hell shouldn't..

You really ought to open the sight up to donations. I think you'd be surprised how much people were willing to give to contribute to the smooth running and even improvement of the website.

Donations are an iffy topic... but if it costs a lot to keep this place up, you could probably get a Paypal account and slap a donation button at the bottom of the page. You can probably have it set up that the billing service would withdraw from that first before it sends an invoice for the remainder if there is any.

No. This isn't an iffy topic. Do not derail this acting like she has -ever- asked for money. She hasn't.
Thats my point. This should not only not cost her 'alot of money'. It should cost her -nothing-.
Do not make this sound sordid when it is not. There are alot of us whom are gratefull for this mecca, and would really not see it be a burden on our benefactor.

Oh and Tilna? This isnt a suggestions/gripe thread about layout. Take it to the suggestions section.

Calm down. Tillna mentioned avatars offhand, and it wasn't critical (and it didn't even sound like a suggestion). Rand's post wasn't suggesting anything "sordid" at all, it was suggesting a means of taking donations. Nothing he said so much as hinted that she had asked for money, which wouldn't be a bad thing anyway. I have no idea how you got that impression, but it's obviously wrong.

All I was trying to say was for one, If the Avatar pictures had worked up, you know, with more character Avatars, a thought I got from Riff's Avatar, It would have had a comedic effect...

And the Avatars are lined up...I am so confused...

And as far as farm for gold for her...some of us have little to no disposable income...

Mort, on a slightly related yet UNRELATED topic, I need to set up a donation on my paypal account to beef up the user size of the vent account Sanctuary and Raven Cross uses so people can stop having to log out for no reason.

I'm not sure HOW to do it, I was going to post it on the Message of the Day at login, or on their Guild Forums, help me?

Or is this some awkward friendship that is a love/hate that I'm not aware of?

*bump*hey guys mort is likely going to shoot me however I feel the need to bump the thread and remind everyone her donation thingy in her post on page one does in fact work.

She is going through alot of money stuff right now with her bad car and new apartment. We enjoy the site and she has always paid it all herself etc. I am not guilt tripping anyone or saying you have to but surely there are peolple on the tng who enjoy it and use it who care a spare a five spot or atleast a buck or two.

Throw the head goblin a bone on this one yeah?

I haven't been here as long as others, and I'm not even in game anymore, but if I read Mortica correctly, the best thing we can get her is to not generate so many dramatic fights and be a little bit more supportive of each other in and out of the game. She seems to take it personally when we beat on each other. Some of you may recall her utter disgust at us when people were bashing the Cartel's transoceanic boat charging event.

Save the drama, save the world.

Dewce

I don't. It's a hobby, if it's too much to do it and you need monetary compensation to keep doing it then don't do it. At least that's the way I look at it.

Ironskull

I don't. It's a hobby, if it's too much to do it and you need monetary compensation to keep doing it then don't do it. At least that's the way I look at it.

But if she quits doing it the site will go down and I will become depressed. Let me map it out econ. style...it's been too long since I've lectured. Think of it as a two-person game with the following payoffs (sowell's payoffs are on top, Mortica's on the bottom). D is the cost of donation, C is the cost of running the site and S is the benefit of getting the site.

Sowell Donates and Mortica Runs Site:
S -D / S + D -C

Sowell doesn't Donate and Mortica Runs Site anyway:
S / S - C

Sowell doesn't donate and Mortica quits:
0 / 0

Okay, so what I do depends on what I think Mortica does. If I don't donate, I certainly hope she still runs the site because my payoff of S > 0. But whether she does that or not depends on whether her payoff of S-C (i.e. the benefit of the site outweighs the cost of running it). This is where you said she should just not run the site if S -C < 0. That makes sense, but what if I decide to donate. Then she will run the site provided S + D -C > 0. In other words, if it becomes worthwhile to run the site because she makes some money on it. It will be rational for me to donate if S - D > 0 (which it is as long as we're not talking about a huge donation) and as a result of my donating she is willing to run the site whereas previously she wasn't. So what really matters is the probability that Mortica will quit if she doesn't get donations. She said she won't, so I suppose donating isn't the rational thing to do.

Nevertheless, it's not rational to pay third-world workers anything more than the tiny amount they are paid, but people still get mad about it. We all benefit from what she does and we should be willing to suffer a bit to repay her. I'll start.

As a token of my gratitude please accept this humiliating story about me:

When I first registered my car at 20 I was sent the registration sticker in the mail. When I got it I was too lazy to read the instructions so I asked the person I was talking to on the phone what to do with the sticker. She said, "Put it on your license." So I put it on the back of my driver's license. For the next year I was pulled over by cops about 4-5 times and every time they told me I was registered late and I showed them my driver's license and they laughed in my face and sent me on my way.

Though I do see your point, I'd have to say that I would rather have someone run the place out of the satisfaction they get out of if over wanting to be paid to do it.

Every guild I've been in or have ran on TN I've created a website and setup a vbulletin forum (Decimate, Silvermoon U, Scourgebusters). I've paid however much for the hosting and the updating of the vbulletin licensing for keeping the most current version. I've researched additional content for the site to give people access to more stuff (item stats, character stats, ventrilo server info, image galleries, file hosting, the list goes on), but I don't think I could ever take money from people to do it. It is just something I did to created a good environment for people to do whatever it is they do.

Granted, I know Mortica didn't start this so this is all pretty much flapping gums. I don't think Mortica would ever ask people for donations or leave if she didn't get any. So the whole conversation is kind of just for kicks really.

If folks wanna pay Mort, or ME for that matter (you know you want to!), why the heck would you discourage it? She didn't start this thread. She's not asking for money, (I am!) so what's your beef, homeslice?

Dewce
08-18-2008, 07:17 PM
No beef. As I said it's up to whoever if they want to donate. It's just a silly idear in my opinion. SO, I wanted to make that known. I know people really want what the Dewce has to say about these things.

Not to mention, if I don't get money, no one does! I guess my point was that doing all this is so easy that taking money from people for it is almost criminal.

Also... I'm the most electrifying troll in warcraft entertaint!

I believe that Dewce simply learned all too well from Sowell's lecture on the Tyranny of Charity, in which we were told that the shackles of social goodwill were keeping Topper the Bum in Stormwind from achieving his full potential as a citizen. If we give Mortica our hard earned cash, will we not be placing the same chains upon her well-meaning wrists?

For shame, Ironskull. What did Mortica ever do to you?

I don't. It's a hobby, if it's too much to do it and you need monetary compensation to keep doing it then don't do it. At least that's the way I look at it.

Although Mortica has stated she doesn't need donations in order to continue, I still object to the principle I perceive -- that she should receive no consideration for her generosity since she enjoys helping others anyway.

Personally, I believe in rewarding virtue everywhere I see it, and selfless virtue deserves reward most of all. And not only on principle. Human beings are human beings. Even if being generous is satisfying to a large degree, no one can live on air forever.

Also, if this becomes a philosophy debate, maybe it should be moved to the misc forum. :D

Perhaps, but sending cash is a pretty crass form of appreciation, as evidenced by the greasy dollar bills Dewce shoves into the G-strings at the Golden Lady Lounge.

I think that it would be better to send Mortica some flowers, a card, or several boxes of hollow point ammunition. Gifts like these come from the heart.

Xaraphyne

Some people believe that showing appreciation in a tangible and inarguably helpful and supportive way isn't tainted at all. It's what the giver believes that matters.
