I picked up Age of Conan today, and frankly, I wish I hadn't. I know this may be a bit early for a review, but here it goes:
The game seems rushed and certain crucial elements are sub-par. Like the UI. *twitch* *twitch* It's clunky. The font is tiny. The party window is tiny. As a healer that makes my job incredibly difficult. I mean, it's TINY. The mini map is too small. All the helpful markers get jumbled together. The full map suffers from the same small/jumble problem. It is IMPOSSIBLE to tell where your party members are. Most of the time you run around saying "Hey! Where the *bleep* are you?". I had the advantage of playing in the same physical room as my party member and we STILL couldn't find each other. Across the country or across the globe? No way.
PvP servers are mostly free-for-all. My biggest problem with their PvP system is how they handle resurrection. You don't run to your body. You don't have options. You will res at the graveyard every time, with a sliver of health.
Guess how easy it is to sit on a Graveyard and camp it?
You can't even log off or switch characters because these aren't options when you are dead. The SECOND you res, you die, from a guy ONE level higher than you, with a bow and arrow, plinking players as they res. There is nothing you can do about it. Alt-tab, I guess.
Now I didn't play WoW on the first few days it came out, so I have no idea how many bugs are normal for a new MMO. That said, this game has a lot of them. For example, there are whole zones you can't enter or your character becomes permanently stuck.
Basically I'm just really disappointed. It seems like they rushed the game out before it was ready and a lot of their "cool" ideas were poorly implemented.
Below are my husbands thoughts on the game-
"So my wife and I picked up Age of Conan and sat down for a day long marathon session. We were very excited to play.
We now wish we had plucked our eyes out and pored salt into the gaping holes instead.
Who ever designed the games UI should be drug out into the street and shot. At the very least they should have their hands cut off at the wrists so that they may never touch a video game again. It is impossible to tell who is in your party, where they are at, what is friendly, what isn't, etc. Trying to gather any form of important data or perform simple functions in the game will only result in eye strain and a migraine.
On to the Combat. Its fun...for about 30 minutes. Then it gets really old, really fast. It favors and rewards button mashing over any form of thought. It has a lot of innovative features, yes, but its all lost in a flailing storm of mash mash mash. Combat is stiff, lacks feel, and is almost devoid of tactics.
RP servers? They are all PvP servers. Whoooo! Right? WRONG. PvP servers translate to Free-for-All servers. Which is one of those things that we all THINK is a good idea, until you get on one. Whole new levels of frustration, especially when you realize you have not options when it comes to resurrection. You will res at the graveyard. Period. You can't even log out dead. You end up getting stuck in a never ending cycle of being graveyard camped wishing you could just log off. But you can't.
Quests? Boring. Snooooozefest. You thought WoW quests were dull? Grab the edge of your seat and log onto a lvl 1 in Durotar, because its an adrenaline thrill ride compared to AoC. Not only that but we found that you actually level noticeably faster just by grinding.
Options? None. You can't modify anything. Not even Mouse Sensitivity. Just to prove the point they added in lots of annoying features just so you can't turn them off. Like the annoying and overly dramatic music that bleeds your ears the moment you hit anything.
Its not all bad though. We give them good marks for graphics. Which it should have considering the minimum system requirements to play it. For an MMO? Come on, seriously?
Save yourself 50 bucks and avoid this game. It was actually so bad we're fleeing back to WoW after swearing it off. In fact, never mind. BUY THIS GAME! It will make you appreciate WoW on a whole new level. You'll never complain again!"

I think I'll still try my hand at it, because I dunno, I've been wanting to play AoC for years.. but I appreciate your feedback. I probably won't start on a PvP-oriented server. Heh. xD But who knows? Gods... that rez issue must suck.

Right. I'm staying away from this game. That's one candidate struck off the list. Now just wait for Warhammer and see how it fares.

Eh, I'm not that worried. I figure a lot of those can be fixed. I doubt WoW was great starting out, and I -know- SWG wasn't either.

SWG was actually VERY good at the beginning, it was later in its life that it sucked... as for WoW I heard it had problems... but none to the point of extreme annoyance like this.
It could take them months to fix these problems (the loads of bugs and the shitty UI and lack of options) because it will require a lot of re-writng, and if you haven't noticed the people who do MMO's are often too lazy to go back and fix everything as opposed to just making new stuff and making more money.

I've played WoW, EQ2, City of Heroes, and Guild Wars at launch. Speaking from a purely technical standpoint (leaving out balance issues, etc.) WoW was by far the most polished out of the box from my standpoint, though EQ2 might have been tied. Regardless, the issues of past games need to be things that developers learn from, not excuses for their own screw-ups. In fact, its become pretty clear over the last year or so that its inexcusable in today's market to push a game out early, because everyone will happily run back to WoW if your game isn't in fighting shape (/kicks Vanguard). Every MMO has problems at launch one way or another because its impossible to predict some issues until you actually let the game go live, but what Ev is describing sounds a lot more like a rushed product trying to swoop in for a cash grab before the WoW expansion and WAR hit in the fall.

I played it all day yesterday.
The small font is able to be resized. I still don't like the fact that the emote system is useless. There were also numerous bugs (such as the entire ocean being invisible to me no matter what setting I use), and the fact that the game would sometimes crash or load me into the floor of a room so that I couldn't move.
I also didn't like the fact that if I want to switch to another character, I have to exit the game. I have to wait through load screens.
I still loved playing it. Yes, it may replace WoW for me if the bugs get ironed out (and they will). This was launch day and was full of typical mess ups, bugs, and shotty things. And the game was still great.
Don't want to be sniped while loading into a zone? Thats not a game developer problem. They make PVE servers for a reason. Did my assassin Teelia get ganked yesterday? Yep, a couple times. I even got one shotted while rezzing like you mentioned. But its why I rolled on that type of server, and yes I killed several other players myself too, making sure they were at half health or fighting mobs before I attacked (although I was nice and didn't camp).
I'm not going to agree or disagree with Evanthe or Ephram. Reviews all boil down to opinion. But I am going to stick with this game for a while and give it a chance to improve, because once it does it will be amazing.
Also, we missed you Evanthe. :) And Skafloc is searching for you in game.

Question: I know you're a big fan of the Conan lore; if this game wasn't based in that world, would you still be enjoying it as much?
Because I've always been a non-fan, and I'm leaning toward not giving it a shot at this point.

I want to buy it right now but I have to save money for my booze party this weekend. ;_;
..then again, I might just say fuck it and buy the game instead of groceries. >_> I don't need to EAT. I will have CONAN!!
And no, I wouldn't be interested in this game if it wasn't for the Conan lore. Just as much as I wouldn't give a shit about WoW if I wasn't a Warcraft 2 nerd throughout high school and middle school.

Sorry Lovely, but I think your love of Conan lore is over-riding your game sense.
The game sucks. Hard.
Its stiff, hard to navigate, poorely designed and a waste of money. I LOVE, freaking LOVE, PvP and the PvP servers are horrid. Free-for-all with every man for himself and no factions? Thats not PvP thats just a greif-fest waiting to happen. I was looking forward to "brutal" PvP, but the way they did it, its just silly. Perhaps if they added more Graveyards and gave you more choices, or let you res at full health. Not to mention they need to get rid of the choke points entering each zone, where you get cut down before you can even load in. This isn't PvP bitterness speaking by the way, I actually never died the entire time I played. These are just issues I noticed. Free-for-all in itself wouldn't be so bad if the targeting system weren't so horrible that many times you can't REALLY be sure who you're going to hit and who you won't. You basically just wildly swing at whatever is in front of you.
RP wise the game is also weak. The Emote functions are indeed useless. Chat needs to be streamlined and easier to use. Just figuring out how to send a tell or speak in party chat was an lesson in frustration. Then again the whole UI is like that. I honestly think this game has the worst UI of anything I've ever played. Thats not exaggeration.
I also LOVE Conan and Conan lore. They day before the game came out I gave my wife a 24 hour monologue on why Conan kicks so much ass. So it pains me to say it, but.....the game still sucks. Don't buy it.
Trust me, I wanted it to rock. I NEEDED it to rock. I'm soooo sick of WoW and wanted something to give it a run for its money. Sadly, this isn't it. Really I feel like I'm playing a Beta. This game needs about 4-6 more months of really focused development, but like some above me said, in this post WoW day and age you can't rush something to market anymore. I feel Funcom did just that. Hopefully Mythic won't make the same mistake. As much as they are delaying release, they had better not.
Signed: Ephram
Edit: And even with resizing (which btw is one of the FEW things you can modify) the text is still hard to see and the game is still hard to navigate. This is on a 24" flat screen. Eva and I kept losing each other. There is nothing in the UI that indicates where your group members are. I also ran around the first town several times until I ACCIDENTALLY noticed the unmarked bum standing next to me was actually the weapon vendor I was looking for. Even the "I have a quest (!) above peoples heads is easy to miss. Its a dull gold color and very easy to over look at range.

Yes, even if you are not a fan, the game is worth trying. Once the bugs get ironed out, this will be the best MMO out there. And the bugs WILL get ironed out. The Devs are pretty good about talking with the customers and staying on top of things.

I got the game last night and played it for about 2 hours, so my experience with the game is very limited.
But, what I saw I liked. The combat system reminds me a lot of Asheron's Call, so it was actually enjoyable for me.

Ah... Gotta love the rantings of people who obviously have never seen WoW during beta, or release for that matter.
Now, as you said, it is way too early in the game for a review. I'm suprised you've managed to play the game for all of what? A day? Two days? Maybe since the 17th if you got your early entrance thing from preorder (so... 3 days? :)).
As Lovely said, Age of Conan is a new game, it was bound to have bugs. All games on release have bugs. Yet so many people don't realize this because WoW was out for a few years before it became really popular.
World of Warcraft is all but dead to me. Unless I want to leave the server, there is nothing here for me anymore besides RP.

And I love the people who don't read posts thuroughly. My problem with it isn't the bugs. All games at launch have them (although this one has more than its fair share) My problem is with a lot of the core mechanics of the game. It just wasn't well done. Any game Developer, especially MMO Devs, know that they have that first hour, maybe day, to get your attention. They have that introductory period to convince you that "hey, this is a game I'm willing to shell out 15 bucks a month for". In my opinion, AoC fails miserably at this, and after 24 hours of launch, I want my 15 bucks back.
Lets start with the starting area. Character creation is, I'll admit, very cool. And they actually give you a story and reason for being there. You don't just spawn in. From there though the game starts to go down hill. Most other games (even EVE which is known for its steep learning curve) will step-by-step introduce you to thier mechanics. WoW even has quests designed to make sure you understand core mechanics. Not AoC. Your first fights are 2-3 vs you. Its not hard. You'd actually have to TRY to die. The problem is that you are instantly thrown in to a group melee situation where you flail about with your stick, rather than learn the mechanics of attacking on a single target where the action is slow and easy to pick up on. In the end you're left standing in a pool of blood, surrounded by bodies, not exactly sure what you just did.
They have a block/attack tug of war system thats interesting, but horribly done. You have 3 "points" you can asign to defending against attacks coming in from 3 directions (the sides and the front). The problem is, this system is so clunky that after 2 fights I just evenly spaced them out and forgot about it.
The combo system is interesting, and could be fun, but it too is clunky and just doesn't "flow". Not to mention that again, 90% of all fights are you against 3 so you end up just wildly swinging around until everything dies. Sad thing is this flailing seems to be the most effective "tactic".
The quests are uninspired and boring, although its clear they tried. Besides that you actually get way more experience and loot by just finding a spot with a good respawn rate and flailing about for an hour.
The game also has sever identity issues. Is it single player? Is it multi-player? Is it instanced? Is it open world? It can't make up its mind and you spend your time constantly being shuffled between all 4.
As for the PvP? Its free-for-all, which has its ups and downs. AoC did nothing to minimize the downs or maximize the ups. It just is what it is, and what it is, is a silly system where skill takes a huge backseat to "who brought the most guys and who can mash buttons faster". As a side note to the previously mentioned UI...you get NO prompt telling you when you have entered or left a PvP enabled zone. Hell you get no prompt telling you if you are in a single player, multi-player, instanced, or open world area. You just get to guess.
The game is complete as far as programming goes. Bugs are bugs and can be fixed. What this game needs is about 4 months of stream-lining, fine-tuning, and polish. As is, it sucks.
I am not a WoW fanboy. After 3+ years of playing my WoW days are over. After 1 day of playing my AoC days are over. The game just plain sucks.
It seems REALLY fun at first, but the newness quickly wears off and its just not a quality product.
Don't take my, or Eva's word for it. Go drop 50 bucks plus a months subscription fee and find out for yourself. I'll see you back on WoW, waiting for something actually good to come out.

I guess I'll drop my opinions here...
While I still have my 30 days to play before I start payin' for it monthly and all, so far AoC is NOT what I was expecting. Saying that, such a thing could normally be good. I'm not really disappointed as much as I'm surprised with the angle they took.
I'm afraid I don't feel 'immersed' in the game or the lore. The idea is there, the settings are there... but it just doesn't flow. I don't see any barfighting by NPC's... no haggling out in the market. I dunno. If I made an MMO, I'd make a WORLD, not just a playground. The problem could just be my computer. Even after updating my graphics card driver, doin' a bunch of stuff, running around Tortage and a few other places keeps on locking up my computer and forcing me to do a manual reboot. I've prolly had to do that 5-6 times now.
The truth is that I have to remember an MMO world before WoW. That could be a problem, or it could be a good idea. I think I myself have come to expect something specific from all MMO's (that they compare to WoW) and I think that in itself can be a problem, because other MMO's should not be WoW. I agree they should still be FUN and such, but so far...
Gods. I wish I had lots of money, time, and help. I'd make an MMO that would make all others pale in comparison.
I'll give more feedback as I play more, and if any one has any suggestions about improving my game quality, let me know, please! :)

I would write an argument to the bad reviews (as I have found RP, and have been having a blast, even with the bugs), but I'm too busy playing and having fun to write any kind of hate filled rant.
Certain people will love the game. Certain people will hate it. People like myself will give it a chance to fix all the mistakes/bugs/errors and will laugh when AOC patch 3.8 comes out and be like "Remember when such 'n' such happened and people thought this was lame?"
I can't wait to see good people that I know in there. I've made a couple of friends so far, and the RP is good (especially for day two of the launch. I imagine once everyone gets moer leveled it will be even better).
:)
I've tried to avoid too much hate filled rant Lovely. I've also tried to be sure I back up statements like "this game sucks" with WHY I feel that way by giving specific examples.
I agree Fae...the whole game, including the world, seems stiff. Its all there, but its not dynamic. There are no NPCs chatting away or argueing. No girls chasing boys who have stolen thier dolls. No one barking out wares. No one gossiping. The NPCs just stand there.
I mean the options for the whore house in the first town alone! But all they have is a single female npc standing there doing nothing. She doesn't even try to entise you over or flirt with you when you walk by.
If it weren't for the (!) above someones head you would never know they were a person of interest.
I didn't go into this game a doubter. I was excited for the new direction it was taking and eager to try something new. I really, REALLY wanted to like AoC.

Last night I was walking through Tortage looking for RPers, and found myself in an alleyway that was blocked by several Tempests of Set. As soon as I entered, they blocked me from leaving (although they did leave an area with a ladder open in case I wanted to escape). They warned me about what they would do to me if I was loyal to the Red Hand, and gave me all kinds of good Serpent-loyal speak. They didn't try to rob me, but there was an open threat issued. I was on my assassin, so I basically went along, waited for one of them to move, and then vanished and left, giggling as I did so.
Five minutes later I ran across a Priest of Mitra arguing with a demonologist about the morale practices of his skinless undead minions.
This was all within a 30 minute period last night at around 2am.
I'd love to see barfights. I'd love to see whores flashing me, and enticing me to go inside the Bearded Clam.
At the same time, I'm glad some things aren't WoW-like. I love the aggro system, for one thing. I was walking through Tortage earlier today when a rogue ran by me getting chased by pirates. In WoW, I'd have the option of stepping aside as they killed her and then pathed back to their starting area.
No...Not in this game. I was in their path, so I became a target too. I ended up healing her (I was on my Tempest of Set), and blasting them with AOE lighting, and we lived. She then said thanks to me, in character, and we RPed while doing a few quests together.
Sure, there are things not to like. But we also haven't seen much at all of the game. I'm willing to give it a shot, because I've had decent experiences with it so far.

And that agro system doesn't seem a bit grief happy to you?
Like, for example, grabbing a hate train, leading it into a group and letting them have it? Sure its cool, but it leaves too much room for abuse. Just like the FFA pvp system. Oh and you can loot anyones kill.
I didn't want it to be like WoW lovely. I wanted something VERY different from WoW. I wanted something that went in a new direction.

My geek is pretty rusty, but from those who speek it fluently I do know that you have to well exceed the minimum system reqs (which are unusually high for an mmo) to actually be able to play AoC.
I have a new system and its pretty damn close to top of the line. Certain parts of the game still get a little jumpy for me.

I must be one of the lucky few. I only have 2 gigs of Ram and my video card barely makes the min requirements, but so far I have had no video problems. For clarification, I should state that I am playing at the minimum settings and set my resolution to the second lowest AoC would go. But even then, the graphics (to me anyway) are amazing and I cannot wait to get home from work so I can explore a bit more.

I will be picking this up next week after I get my new computer built.
Even if everyone says it's a piece of crap (and not everyone is...it sounds to me most of the issues may be PVP based issues, which everyone knows are a nightmare to developers), I will still buy it and give it a fair shake.
There also seems to be so documentation issues, if I'm reading what you guys have written correctly. I know my coworker has been dazzling me with all sorts of cool things he's found. Hidden /slash commands that let you teleport back to save points and stuff, solo-playing dungeons and stopping half way through, coming back the next day and you are still cleared to the place you got to.

I turned my graphics settings way down after the first day, and today its been awesome. Even with the settings low, I still see amazing visuals. And its fast, and I'm not lagging off bridges like I did last night.
I want to also say how much I'm enjoying the Destiny quests. I did the assassin one last night which took me to a volcano, where I had to kill groups of mobs strategically placed on ledges over looking a lava flow. Yeah, I died a few times, but wow it was some intense solo questing. And a genius on the Devs part for setting that up, because they basically instanced a multiplayer map and tailored it for each class.

This doesn't bother me at all. I went to White Sands last night on Teelia, started fighting mobs, and before I realized it I had killed another player who had tried to help me. Not always a good thing, but then again friendly fire does happen, and I had fun afterwards playing cat and mouse with his group of friends who came to help him and suddenly had been told I was a bad guy too. I died a few times, and so did they, and we all had a good laugh about it in the OOC channel.
I also admit I totally griefed/camped people I saw with non-RP names while on White Sands Isle. Being able to camp your own faction is great in that regard.
Yeah, you can loot other people's kills, and you can train mobs into people, and generally create mayhem. But if you don't like that, you can always roll on the PVE server I guess. Even though I've been killed (and shot to death when spawning at the graveyard a couple times), I totally love it.
Ah well.
I'm not trying to vote AoC off the island or anything.
Before considering buying this game I read a few reviews and they were mostly positive. So I spent the money.
The reason I, and Eva posted our review wasn't because we are angry or hate the game, but because we wished we had the feedback beforehand.
I honestly think players like Lovely, who have been looking forward to AoC forever and are huge Conan fans are going to like it no matter what.
Other players are going to like it for a month or two just because its new and not WoW.
I only wish I knew then what I know now.
The PvE is bleh.
The PvP is wtf?!
The UI is crap.
The whole game feels stiff and lacks any real attention to detail.
Anyone who knows me knows that if I ever met a WoW dev in real life, he may want curl into the fetal position and lay still until the beatings stop.
After playing AoC I just want to hug anyone who works for Blizzard.
AoC and Funcom get two thumbs down. I'm still a huge Conan fan though :P

You rolled on a straight PVP server? Did you not read my post in the other thread about how I had heard some pvp servers were gank fests? Welcome to reality. The game is great. The quest system is fine in fact it is extremely similar to wow. Does the minimap suck.... yes, but they have already said it is on the list. Graphic issues... did you read the post in the other thread by villayna? It fixed it for me took like 5 minutes, big hassle. *sarcasm* In fact I would go so far to say that outside of combat this game is identical to wow in alot of ways.
Long story short. This game is trying to do something different and innovate. I applaud that successful or not. I love the game so far and I even got hit with a bug that has trapped one of my characters in a single player story instance, a much worse fate than anything that happened to you.

Ok, Torm or Eph or whatever, I appreciate that your offering your opinion on the game, and I do take in into consideration when considering whether or not to spend the money on the game....but seriously dude, you've said the same thing over and over. You don't like it. I respect that. But enough is enough. At this point it just looks like trash talk, which makes me want to unleash some Cimmerian rage on you.
Apparenty I've ruffled a few feathers.
Continue playing, I hope you enjoy it. I didn't.
However, if you're going to refute my statements do as I did and give specific examples.
I gave specific examples of why the game stinks.
Give me specific examples of why the game is good.

Also... the game looks awesome even on low. Faelan I saw your specs you are running a pc that is going to have problems with this game, it is the cost they were willing to pay to make it look so good. If you get into the single player missions after you enter tortage you will have plenty of lore and immersion.
Barfights are also on the list, or at least they want to enable players to fight drunk.
PS: In my entire day on cimmeria yesterday I only got attacked once by a person retaliating against a previous attack by my party mate. I cant say I blame him.

This is alot of interesting views on the game, and yet, I'm still neutral if I should try it. I might have to get ahold of someones friend code to test it out.
But my question is this, whats the lvl cap for it?

:)
I assume you rolled on the Cimmeria server?
Also, from how you described the RP, it sounds even better than what I first thought. Gogo new computer!

Oh good hells no. How is the lvling process? Easy? Or as painful as WoW?

WoW is considered easy by many other games' standards. :P
Hence why I've never been into alts.

I played for 4 hours this morning and got a Tempest of Set from 1-8. And that was with RPing. However, once you get around level 10 it seems to be about like WoW.
And yeah, I'm on Cimmeria. Woo!

I'm not mad, not really. It just got the feeling that you wrote the exact same thing, only using a thesaurus or something to make your wording different, which just gets annoying after two pages. Kinda like this!

Levelling Curve, according to Devs, is 1-80 in an average of 250-300 hours. VS WoW's average of 450-500 of 1-60

Yeah you are meant to get 20 reasonably quickly. Had Crom not cursed me and trapped me inside tortage castle I would be at least 19 by now.

If this game gets polished up I might pick it up anywhere from a month to six months from now, I might be trippling up on mmos (so many subscriptions TT_TT))
