View Full Version : Hypocrisy

So... I have a question... is it really so easy to fall into?

Does it really not raise a red flag in the mind if you lecture and patronize someone for doing something... then to turn to someone else and either ignore the same thing or essentially go "Oh, you know how _____ is. They're always like that." as if that somehow makes it perfectly ok?

If you own two dogs and discipline one for peeing on the carpet, then do nothing when the other does the same thing... guess what? Your carpet's still getting peed on. I'd think any sane person would probably not want that nor be pleased, regardless if the first dog is a rottweiler while the other one is a labrador. A dog is still peeing on the carpet. If you tolerate that happening, you're an idiot, and you're gross.

Yeah, there's a few things that this applies to, and no, most of them actually do not apply to TNG. It however does happen here quite a bit.

Thoughts?

You slip into it when your own ass is on the line.

Yeah, it's that simple and I only needed one sentence to explain it. If you want a paragraphed example let me know.

I think this applies... ahem: A man always thinks others are as honest as he is.
Same probably goes for women too.

Don't be actin' a fool. You know what she means.

Now onto the subject, Hypocrisy is one of my very biggest pet peeves, however, everyone is guilty of it to some degree, so I would say yes, it is easy to fall into.

I'm just curious to know how people can deal with contradicting themselves and having double standards, and still expect to be thought of seriously.

Case in point, your comment is very... ironic.

Because people justify things? That's all it boils down to.

Kinda like how I shake people like babies and then turn around and say child abusers should die? I actually believe child abusers should die but I don't think there's anything wrong with grabbing an adult who is talking all sorts of shit by the shoulders and shaking them like a freaking maraca...

First Rand, you are very aware of things and sometimes when people are aware of things they let the things get to them when really it shouldn't. I know cause I'm the same way.

Also, most people judge others by different standards than they judge themselves. There's the odd person who judges themselves harshly and so thinks of how their actions will affect others. That person is odd. The majority don't give a shit about anyone but themselves.

Let's take the TNG for example. Swerto is annoying and thinks he's funny. I'm annoying and I think I'm funny. Abric is annoying and thinks he's funny. Emmons is annoying and thinks he's funny. Tillna is annoying and thinks he's funny. Who gets treated better for their brand of annoying? It's all based on whether we like the person, whether we understand what the hell they are doing and whether we want their brand of annoying in our general area. When we don't, we rant and bitch them out for it even though it's likely we're annoying ourselves.

And Rand. Relax. You're thoughtful and getting upset over things you really shouldn't. I can tell by most of your posts that you think about what the post is about, then respond with your heart. Many people online don't care that you responded with your heart, they just want to rip it to shreds for the lulz. Don't let them do that. Please.

Some of these comments are wonderful examples of how it does happen on TNG and... people somehow still expect to be thought of seriously.

I honestly don't give a second thought to what most people who come here think of me. I post what I like and when I like, within the forum rules of course. For the time being, this place is entertaining in all its endeavors of some to try and make themselves look bigger than they really are.

I've gotten annoyed at some posts, even offended by a couple, but I highly doubt anyone here can say they haven't felt the same way at some point about something online. Contrary to popular belief, I do shrug things off the moment I'm no longer interested in them. I am open for debate so long as I care about the topic, but I am amazed that there's such a vocal minority that can't seemingly cope with the fact that I'm not going to immediately swing to their side on any given topic. It's actually kind of cute in a way that I would type /soothe at were this in game.

Furthermore, TNG has about as much bearing on my life as it does my cats' lives. People being hypocrites here doesn't affect my life or situation, so bear in mind if I'm posting about it, chances are it's because of something in real life that is actually... you know... important. So I posted about it here, kinda like how Feralmoon posted how she was pissed off that her iPod got destroyed in the wash, or how hearing some jackass on the radio made her teeth grit. Or is it only ok for her to do it because that's "how she is"?

Enlighten me, please.

As for hypocrisy being easy to fall into, during times of heightened stress... I can see that. That doesn't explain it being habitual or during times when there isn't a lot to be anxious about.

I'm going to be unusual and reply to this thread in a way that is not mockery-ingly un-serious jocularity.

I've noticed recently that this is very true, not that I didn't know it before, but it's just become more pronounced. I guess I stopped noticing it so much when I started doing it myself as well. I honestly think there was a time at which I was not so caught up in myself (which I probably am) and judged myself and not others - I'm not saying I'm this saint or something, but it happened.

Doesn't happen anymore. So I got to thinking - Why is that? Surely I'm not the only one, I'm not -that- conceited. I'm beginning to think that this is not only human nature, but it happens when people overextend themselves for others and get hurt. I see alot of "who cares what they think, be yourself", and honestly I say it alot as well, it's what I think. But I don't think that really used to enter my mind. Until I overextended myself (we've all done it) for someone else, and conciously or subconciously I'm trying to avoid it happening again, introverting myself.

As I said before, I don't think I'm the only one, but I could be wrong.

I think this ties into hypocrisy in that like Ells said, people who are introverted don't notice their own hypocrisy cause they justify it (just as sulajin noted) and think it's perfectly reasonable.

Studying human psychology is interesting...
