My 360 came back today from the service center (I was able to send it in because I apparently HAD filled out all the warranty stuff) today. It's only been 3 weeks and had to travel interstate so I'm actually quite impressed with how quickly it was fixed.

Got it plugged in and all up and running... and it tells me on the dashboard that my 360 now needs to download a software upgrade?

I'm kinda baffled by this because it's not just a service update but a "software" upgrade, and it wouldn't let me do anything until it was finished. Once it was done I got curious and checked out the 'hull' of my 360. Sure enough, it's got a different I.D. code on it than when I first sent it out, but it's still got the same casing.

Turns out EVERYTHING in my 360 was replaced. It's actually running quieter, has the chip from the Elite sitting inside it, and a little spot hidden under the faceplate that's covered by a sticker for some unknown purpose. I checked in with Australian support and gave them my customer I.D. and they basically told me that all 360's received in their store for repairs now, rather than being replaced by simply refurbished innards, have been replaced by brand new hardware right from the word go. They didn't even TRY to repair my 360. They basically just took out its brain and replaced it with a new one.

It's actually quite cool, it's even running quieter and not nearly as hot as it used to. It has these new power saving modes that were never there before I sent it out... I'm quite stoked it broke down now!

Thats great news Dio. But it makes me wonder..

I just bought a 360 a few weeks ago for my son. I am wondering if the new ones come similarly configured or are they the old chassis?

..and yes, I know its 3:50 AM here. I worked all night, hence all the writing I did last eve. Luckily I have tomorrow (today?) off.

Important thing is you GET THAT WARRANTY on it. If it comes up with the Red Ring of Death, you get a 3 year extension on your warranty. HOWEVER...

It is my understanding that the company that made the launch consoles for the 360 was based in china and did a crappy job/did it by Microsofts specs (Depending on who you ask) and after the 360 started having all the issues with its processor, Microsoft dumped them and went onto a new company. They'd be crazy to still be selling 360's with that error. I can only imagine how much they had to pay just for postage let alone replacement parts and hiring so many repairers. It would be a better investment to just get the new 360's sold with higher quality hardware.

So to answer your question, the likeliness that the chip will die in your sons 360 is very low. There's still a chance that your 360 might die and you'll get the RRoD. But really no larger a chance than any other console on the market right now.

That is, so long as the 360 you bought hasn't been sitting on a store shelf for several months/is refurbished/second hand.

I got the 360 Elite. If it messes up... I will be displeased.

My 360 is a vicious motherfucker who likes to spit all over my oblivion disk right after I've closed three gates and become sheogorath. ;-; yeah I totally did it all over again, but it wasn't nearly as fun.

The 360 Elite has an updated chip. I don't think there's been one report of the RRoD with it.

EDIT: And might I profess my undying love for the XBOX Live Marketplace and XBOX Live Arcade?

Multiplayer Sonic the Hedgehog? I mean, c'mon!

This is why you never never never never EVER buy first gen no matter how shiny it looks or how many attachments it has to make you feel like a better man.

But I didn't buy first gen. It wasn't released some few months later here in Australia, and it was a few months even after THAT that I actually bought it. *Shrug*
